The cartilage-conduction pathway was recently proposed as a third auditory pathway; however, middle-ear vibrations have not yet been investigated in vivo. We aimed to measure the ossicles and bone vibration upon cartilage-conduction stimulation with a non-contact laser Doppler vibrometer. We recruited adult patients with normal ear structures who underwent cochlear implant surgery at our hospital between April 2020 and December 2022. For sound input, a cartilage-conduction transducer, custom-made by RION Corporation (Tokyo, Japan), was fixed to the surface of the tragus and connected to an aud

Although most birds encounter large pressure variations during flight, motion of the middle ear components as a result of changing ambient pressure are not well known or described. In the present study, motion of the columella footplate and tympanic membrane (extrastapedius) in domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) under quasi-static pressure conditions are provided. Micro-CT scans were made of cadaveric heads of chickens under positive (0.25 kPa, 0.5 kPa, 1 kPa, and 1.5 kPa) and negative (-0.25 kPa, -0.5 kPa, -1 kPa, and -1.5 kPa) middle ear pressure. Both extrastapedius and columella

Chronic inflammation of the middle ear is a common disease in which the mobility of the middle ear ossicles may be reduced; resulting in hearing impairment. Knowledge of the degree of ossicular mobility is useful in helping a surgeon determine how to proceed with treatment. In advanced cases, mobility can be assessed by manually pressing on the ossicles, but in less advanced cases manual assessment can provide limited useful information. Ossicular vibration can be measured with a laser vibrometer, but only the manubrium of the malleus is optically visible without removing the eardrum. Since th

The middle ear ossicles are important due to transmission of sound to the inner ear leading to sound understanding. The aim of present study was to determine the anatomical and morphometrical aspects of middle ear ossicles in Makouei sheep fetuses. For this experimental study, eight sheep fetuses at the age of 2 to 3 months were provided from public slaughterhouse; their middle ear ossicles were removed from tympanic cavity subsequently and assessed anatomically using stereomicroscope. For statistical analysis, one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test were used. The results showed that rostral

CONCLUSION: Information on the degree of incus fixation can be gathered by measuring the ratio of incus to umbo long process velocity through the ear canal.
OBJECTIVES: To test a new method of quantifying partial ossicular fixation in an ear with an elevated tympanic membrane.
METHODS: Measurements were made on four fresh-frozen human temporal bones. After elevating the tympanic membrane a small magnet was attached to the manubrium and an electromagnetic excitation coil was used to vibrate the ossicles. The vibration response of the tip of the incus long process and the umbo were measured be

OBJECTIVE: Conductive hearing loss can be caused by fixation or discontinuity of the ossicles. Current noninvasive methods such as tympanometry and conventional clinical imaging might indicate mobility and/or pathology but cannot quantify the excursion. The objective of this study is to measure the excursion of the malleus and incus using timed pressurization during clinical cone-beam CT (CBCT) of the middle ear.
PATIENTS: Five human cadaveric heads.
INTERVENTION: CBCT imaging obtained at an isotropic resolution of 0.08 mm of five cadaveric heads (10 ears). A tympanometer was used to pressur

Whereas mammals are characterized by the presence of three middle ear ossicles, reptiles have only one, the columella (stapes). Nevertheless, there is a great diversity of columellar anatomy among sauropsids, especially in the unique and cartilaginous "extracolumella"-portion. Molecular studies revealed the "columella" of chicken and quails to be formed within the second pharyngeal arch, although conflicting evidence exists for the columellar footplate and distal parts of the columella in these birds. We studied columellar development in four turtles, one lizard, and one caiman species and arg

OBJECTIVES: This study's aims were to reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) structures of healthy middle ear ossicles and of ossicles destroyed by cholesteatoma in children and to compare the 3D micro-CT scans and histological findings with a focus on detecting epidermal invasion into the middle ear ossicles.
METHODS: Nine middle ear ossicles affected by cholesteatoma obtained during standard surgery were analysed and compared to healthy ossicles harvested from children obtained during facial nerve decompression surgery. The structures of the ossicles were analysed using micro-CT scan and histoc

It is believed that non-mammals have poor hearing at high frequencies because the sound-conduction performance of their single-ossicle middle ears declines above a certain frequency. To better understand this behavior, a dynamic three-dimensional finite-element model of the chicken middle ear was constructed. The effect of changing the flexibility of the cartilaginous extracolumella on middle-ear sound conduction was simulated from 0.125 to 8 kHz, and the influence of the outward-bulging cone shape of the eardrum was studied by altering the depth and orientation of the eardrum cone in the mode

This study validates an automated deep learning framework for generating high-fidelity 3D models of the middle-ear ossicles from low-resolution clinical CT images. The framework employs a sequential three-stage pipeline: (1) accurate Region of Interest (ROI) detection using YOLOv5x, (2) 4x super-resolution of the ROI with a Deep Back-Projection Network (DBPN), and (3) slice interpolation using a 2.5D U-Net to create a dense volumetric dataset. To ensure robust reconstruction from incomplete data, the interpolation stage integrates a "hint channel" that leverages anatomical priors. The framewor

A novel X-ray stereoscopy technique, using greyscale information obtained from moving markers, was used to study the 3D motion in both gerbil and rabbit middle ear ossicles in the quasi-static pressure regime. The motion can be measured without visually exposing the ossicles. The ossicles showed non-linear behaviour as a function of both pressure and frequency. For instance, about 80% of the maximum umbo displacement occurs at a 1 kPa (peak-to-peak) pressure load, while a limited increase of the amplitude is noticed when the pressure goes to 2 kPa. In rabbit the ratio of stapes to umbo motion

The time delay and/or malfunctioning of the Eustachian tube may cause pressure differences across the tympanic membrane, resulting in quasi-static movements of the middle-ear ossicles. While quasi-static displacements of the human middle-ear ossicles have been measured one- or two-dimensionally in previous studies, this study presents an approach to trace three-dimensional movements of the human middle-ear ossicles under static pressure loads in the ear canal (EC). The three-dimensional quasi-static movements of the middle-ear ossicles were measured using a custom-made stereo camera system. Tw

Binaural and monaural ossicle ablation in neonate rats before the time of onset of auditory input resulted in hearing deficits as detected by behavioural responses to sound stimuli in these rats as young adults. Cochlear disruption at the same neonatal age similarly resulted in the absence of startle reflexes in many of the rats. When the middle and inner ears of the rats were analysed postmortem in serial sections, it was observed that most ears after neonatal ossicle ablation contained only small remnants of the malleus-incus unit, separated from the stapes; in other ears an apparent continu

BACKGROUND: Compared to the microscopic approach (MA), the endoscopic approach (EA) is more challenging for the removal of cholesteatomas and reconstruction of the ossicle chain and canal wall. We presented a surgical technique for rebuilding the canal wall and ossicle chain with tragal cartilage/perichondrium composite grafts in the resection of cholesteatomas under EA.
METHODS: This retrospective study consisted of 24 cases undergoing EA (EA group) for cholesteatomas destroying the ossicles and 28 cases undergoing MA (MA group). The aim of this study was to analyze the outcome of ossiculopl

In young adult guinea pigs, the effects of unilateral ossicle removal and cochlear ablation were determined on transmitter release from glutamatergic presynaptic endings and glutamate inactivation via uptake. (i) D-[3H]Aspartate release and uptake were measured in subdivisions of the cochlear nucleus (CN) and in nuclei of the superior olive (SOC) and auditory midbrain (MB) up to 145 days after placing the lesions. Activities were compared to those from age-matched unlesioned controls. Fiber degeneration was visualized histologically. (ii) In the ipsilateral CN, changes in release and uptake we

OBJECTIVE: The choice of the graft in ossicular chain reconstruction during middle ear surgery for cholesteatoma is a subject still discussed on. In order to clarify the discussion of reuse of the autologous ossicles obtained during middle ear surgery for cholesteatoma, we evaluated the probability of residual disease histologically and the safety of the ossicles after autoclavization, the most promoting alternative method to eradicate residual cholesteatoma and infection on them.
METHODS: The specimens used in this study were eroded twenty-seven ossicles (22 incuses, 5 malleoli) which were r
