BACKGROUND: Poor sleep is common in intensive care unit (ICU) patients, where environmental factors contribute to reduce and fragment sleep. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of earplugs and eye mask on sleep architecture in ICU patients.
METHODS: A single-center randomized controlled trial of 64 ICU patients was conducted from July 2012 to December 2013. Patients were randomly assigned to sleep with or without earplugs and an eye mask from inclusion until ICU discharge. Polysomnography was performed on the first day and night following inclusion. The primary outcome was

A two-part study was undertaken to investigate warning signal detection by motorcyclists. First the acoustic environment was established for both the helmeted and bareheaded rider between speeds of 0 and 100 mph. For the helmeted rider it was found that below 20 mph vehicle noise was dominant and between 20 and 40 mph there was a variable contribution from both vehicle and wind noise. At 40 mph wind noise became the dominant sound source and increased linearly with the log10 of speed from 90 dB(A) to reach 112 dB(A) at 100 mph. Sound levels were consistently 18 dB(A) greater for the bareheaded

BACKGROUND: Sleep and circadian rhythms are markedly altered in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Numerous factors related to the patient and the ICU environment affect the ability to initiate and maintain sleep. Therefore, nonpharmacological interventions could play an essential role in improving sleep and circadian rhythm.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine nonpharmacological interventions evaluated for promoting sleep in adult ICUs.
METHODS: A scoping review was conducted, including randomised controlled trials, nonrandomised controlled trials, quasi-experimental trials, an

OBJECTIVE: This investigation was designed to determine the effectiveness of earmuffs worn by a single individual during shooting practice.
DESIGN: Single subject experimental design.
STUDY SAMPLE: A 21-year old female recreational shooter, who practiced shooting on a regular basis while using earmuffs participated in the study. She reported occasional noise exposures of other types including car races and demolition derbies but no hearing difficulties or symptoms such as tinnitus. Her auditory sensitivity was within normal limits. On each test-day, distortion product otoacoustic emissions (

Two solutions to the problem of excessive noise exposure and consequent hearing loss in motorcyclists were investigated and are described. One was an antecedent behaviour-modifying 'prompting' strategy, where a set of earplugs and an advice sheet were provided at the point of sale to consecutive purchasers of new motorcycle crash helmets. Forty-eight riders were recruited but data for analysis were only available in 41. The earplug usage rate was significantly increased from 27% to 83% by this intervention. The second solution involves various aerodynamics and sound-proofing helmet modificatio

HIGHLIGHTS: Over 50% of the young adult agricultural workers surveyed reported never wearing a helmet, seatbelt, or hearing protection when operating an ATV or UTV. Young adult agricultural workers' mean ATV and UTV safety scores ranged from 1 to 4.44 on a scale of 1 to 5. Gender, supervisor influence, and risk-taking behaviors significantly influenced young agricultural workers ATV and UTV safety scores.
ABSTRACT: ATV and UTV crashes are a leading cause of agricultural-related injury and death in the United States. Young adult agricultural workers (under the age of 25) contribute substantial

INTRODUCTION: Sleep deprivation is common in critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Noise and light in the ICU and the reduction in plasma melatonin play the essential roles. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of simulated ICU noise and light on nocturnal sleep quality, and compare the effectiveness of melatonin and earplugs and eye masks on sleep quality in these conditions in healthy subjects.
METHODS: This study was conducted in two parts. In part one, 40 healthy subjects slept under baseline night and simulated ICU noise and light (NL) by a cross-over des

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) has been reported in both people and canines and can raise the hearing threshold. In people, hearing protection devices (HPD's) are utilized to reduce the risk of hearing loss. In canines, HPD's have been developed, but none, to our knowledge, have been objectively tested to determine their ability to reduce incoming sound. We hypothesize that a canine hearing protection device (CHPD) will effectively protect hearing in canines by increasing hearing thresholds. Twenty-one apparently healthy canines between the ages of 4-69 months were anesthetized for routine

Many commercially available hearing protector fit testing (HPFT) systems are able to measure personal attenuation rating (PAR) values for earplugs, but only a few are capable of measuring PAR with over-the-ear protectors and even fewer are able to estimate PAR values with double hearing protection. One approach that could potentially be used with any type of hearing protection is to modify the real-ear attenuation at threshold method to use an occluded threshold that is measured with circumaural headphones worn around the neck rather than over the ears. However, this method would only be valid

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss in neonates is more than 100 times that of the general pediatric population. Research suggests that there is a large amount of toxic noise exposure for these neonates in the neonatal intensive care unit and in the transport environments. Thus, acoustic neuroprotection, or auditory protection and support of neurodevelopment, is an important concept, particularly for neonates.
PURPOSE: A systematic review of the literature was conducted to determine the possibility of successfully supporting acoustic neuroprotection and decreasing the ambient noise level to the recommen

Bone conduction (BC) is a method of perceiving sound via living tissue. Some components of BC sound reach the middle or inner ear directly, so it can be heard even when wearing earplugs. Therefore, BC is used in speech communication devices in noisy environments that require wearing earplugs. However, the perception of BC sound under high-intensity noise is generally complicated by the temporal and frequency characteristics of the noises, the noise reduction rate of the earplugs, and the "occlusion effect," a phenomenon where the loudness of low-frequency bands increases due to wearing earplug

BACKGROUND: A majority of pregnant women experience sleep disruption during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester. Lack of sleep is associated with preterm birth, prolonged labor and higher cesarean section rate. Six or less hours of night sleep in the last month of pregnancy is associated with a higher rate of caesarean births. Eye-masks and earplugs compared to headband improve night sleep by 30 or more minutes. We sought to evaluate eye-mask and earplugs compared to sham/placebo headbands on spontaneous vaginal delivery.
METHODS: This randomized trial was conducted from December 201

Standard clinical protocols require hearing protection during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for patient safety. This investigation prospectively evaluated the auditory function impact of acoustic noise exposure during a 3.0T MRI in healthy adults. Twenty-nine participants with normal hearing underwent a comprehensive audiologic assessment before and immediately following a clinically indicated head MRI. Appropriate hearing protection with earplugs (and pads) was used per standard of practice. To characterize noise hazards, current sound monitoring tools were used to measure levels of pulse

Impulse noise causes evidently more severe hearing loss than steady state noise. The additional effect of occupational impulse noise on hearing has been shown to be from 5 to 12 dB at 4 kHz audiometric frequency. Reported cases for compensated for hearing loss are prevalent in occupations where noise is impulsive. For impulse noise two measurement methods have been proposed: the peak level method and energy evaluation method. The applicability of the peak level method is difficult as even the recurrent impulses have different time and frequency characteristics. Various national risk criteria d

Earplugs are a common form of protection for workers exposed to hazardous noise levels. Their comfort directly impacts the effective protection by influencing their consistent and correct use. Nevertheless, comfort definition may vary according to the studies. Thus, a previous review of the literature has shown that to improve our understanding of perceived comfort and to reduce measurement variability, it is advisable to consider comfort through a multidimensional construct (physical, acoustical, functional and psychological). On this basis, the COPROD (COnfort des PROtections auDitives/COmfo

Adolescents frequently engage in noisy leisure activities which can result in hearing-related problems. However, the effect of leisure noise exposure is liable to an individual's risk-taking behavior. Identifying leisure noise activities and relevant factors related to risk-taking behavior in adolescents, are important to optimize hearing conservation programs targeting youngsters. The purpose of the study was to explore the presence of hearing-related symptoms, as well as noise exposure during various activities, and the use of hearing protector devices (HPDs) in adolescents in two educationa
