Treatment modalities for lymphocytic and neutrophilic scarring alopecia.

Primary cicatricial alopecia can result in permanent hair loss from the destruction of hair follicles. Early intervention is key in controlling disease progression, reducing symptoms, and optimizing hair density. Treatment modalities range from topical and intralesional therapies to oral medications and light therapy.

Ethnic variations in duration of untreated psychosis: report from the CRIS-FEP study.

OBJECTIVES: There is inconsistent evidence on the influence of ethnicity on duration of untreated psychosis (DUP). We investigated ethnic differences in DUP in a large epidemiological dataset of first episode psychosis patients in an inner city area of south London, UK. METHODS: We analysed data on 558 first episode psychosis patients at the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust, between 2010 and 2012. We performed multivariable logistic regression to estimate the odds of a short DUP (≤ 6 months) by ethnic group, controlling for confounders. RESULTS: There was no evidence that ethnicity is ass

Scoping review on noticing concerns in child development: a missing piece in the early intervention puzzle.

BACKGROUND: Between 13 and 32% of children in developed nations are at-risk for developmental delays. In order to identify concerns, there is a need to understand the mechanisms that facilitate becoming aware of it. AIM: A scoping review was conducted to understand this process of "noticing", through existing literature on parent experiences. METHODS: Records from major academic databases and grey literature sources were searched using key terms. Thematic analysis was then conducted to synthesise findings. RESULTS: Twenty papers meeting inclusion were identified. Noticing a delay was found

Maximizing the potential of early childhood education to prevent externalizing behavior problems: A meta-analysis.

Early childhood education (ECE) programs offer a promising mechanism for preventing early externalizing behavior problems and later antisocial behavior; yet, questions remain about how to best maximize ECE's potential. Using a meta-analytic database of 31 studies, we examined the overall effect of ECE on externalizing behavior problems and the differential effects of 3 levels of practice, each with increasing specificity and intensity aimed at children's social and emotional development. In short, we found that each successive level of programs did a better job than the prior level at reducing

A home-based, post-discharge early intervention program promotes motor development and physical growth in the early preterm infants: a prospective, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The implementation of early intervention (EI) in medical settings is time-consuming and resource-intensive, which limits its extensive use. In 2018, the Chinese Eugenics Association developed a home-based, post-discharge EI program. This study aims at evaluating the impact of this EI program on neurodevelopment and physical growth of early preterm infants. METHODS: This study was a prospective, partially blinded, randomized controlled trial (RCT), followed by an open phase. A total of 73 infants born at 28+ 0 ~ 31+ 6 weeks' gestation who were admitted to the Children's Hospital of

An ecosystemic perspective of the factors affecting the learning experiences of learners with dyslexia in mainstream schools in England.

A systematic literature review (SLR) of seven papers written between 2015 and 2021 explored the educational experiences of learners with dyslexia in mainstream schools in England from an ecosystemic perspective and how to improve the situation. The analysis employed keywords for database searches and followed the PRISMA flow protocol. It synthesised evidence using thematic analysis and identified seven themes: dyslexia challenges; differential treatment; negative stereotypes; early intervention; teachers' training; power dynamics; and collaboration. The results suggest that several factors can

Improving Reading Skills Using a Computerized Phonological Training Program in Early Readers with Reading Difficulties.

In the last years, there has been a big effort to identify risk factors for reading difficulties and to develop new methodologies to help struggling readers. It has been shown that early intervention is more successful than late intervention, and that intensive training programs can benefit children with reading difficulties. The aim of our study is to investigate the effectiveness of an intensive computerized phonological training program designed to improve reading performance in a sample of children with reading difficulties at the early stages of their reading learning process. Thirty-two

Alzheimer's disease prevention: from risk factors to early intervention.

Due to the progressive aging of the population, Alzheimer's disease (AD) is becoming a healthcare burden of epidemic proportions for which there is currently no cure. Disappointing results from clinical trials performed in mild-moderate AD dementia combined with clear epidemiological evidence on AD risk factors are contributing to the development of primary prevention initiatives. In addition, the characterization of the long asymptomatic stage of AD is allowing the development of intervention studies and secondary prevention programmes on asymptomatic at-risk individuals, before substantial i

Planting the Seeds of Collaboration: A Pilot for School/Clinic Partnerships During Pediatric Clerkship.

Although pediatricians and family physicians often refer children to early intervention (EI) and provide support and information to families, medical school training that provides information about special education policy and procedures is often limited. We piloted a program whereby medical students, during their pediatric clerkship, observed school classrooms that included young children with disabilities. Visit impact was measured through assessments of perceived competency and a written reflection. Students showed perceived competency growth across all areas measured. Written reflections d

[Early attention and specific intervention programs with autism spectrum disorders].

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that is characterised by qualitative deficiencies in social interaction and in communication, behaviour that is characterised by repetitive stereotyped patterns, and a restricted repertoire of interests and activities. DEVELOPMENT AND CONCLUSIONS: Early detection and diagnosis of this disorder by means of neuropaediatric techniques and procedures plays a decisive role in being able to set up an interdisciplinary therapeutic approach, in which specific early intervention programmes are noted for their effectiveness. The a

Family-Centered Early Intervention Deaf/Hard of Hearing (FCEI-DHH): Introduction.

This article is the first of eight articles in this special issue on Family-Centered Early Intervention (FCEI) for children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH), or FCEI-DHH. In 2013, a diverse panel of experts published an international consensus statement on evidence-based Principles guiding FCEI-DHH. Those original Principles have been revised through a coproduction process involving multidisciplinary collaborators and an international consensus panel, utilizing the best available evidence and current understanding of how to optimally support children who are DHH and their families. A narrative review of intervention in first-episode affective psychoses.

While first-episode schizophrenia has received extensive attention in the literature, few studies have focused on the first episode of affective psychoses. Considering the lack of structured data regarding this diagnostic grouping commonly used in clinical settings, our aim was to scope the literature on first-episode affective psychoses to consolidate current knowledge and to identify areas to be targeted in future studies. We also planned to investigate the relevance of the "affective psychosis" concept regarding diagnostic categories and specific needs of intervention. We conducted a search

Principles of early intervention.

The great majority of children with neurodevelopmental challenges do not get specific intervention until after their second birthday. This worsens their outcomes, because a great part of the entire neuroplastic window for learning is misspent. There is emerging evidence that the impact on outcomes of early goal-directed training involving the parents in infants with neurodevelopmental disabilities is significantly superior to the results achieved in older children and adults, especially if intervention commences in the first months of life. This chapter outlines the common elements of neurodev

Public health significance of bipolar disorder: implications for early intervention and prevention.

OBJECTIVES: Early intervention and preventive strategies have become major targets of research and service development in psychiatry over the last few years. Compared to schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (BD) has received limited attention in this regard. In this paper, we review the available literature in order to explore the public health significance of BD and the extent to which this may justify the development of early intervention strategies for this disorder. METHODS: The main computerized psychiatric literature databases were accessed. This included Medline and PsychInfo, using the fol
