Dental caries and body mass index in adult and elderly lithuanians: a cross-sectional study exploring sex-specific patterns.

BACKGROUND: WHO calls to end the global oral health crisis, as oral diseases impact more people than all other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) combined. Obesity, a global epidemic, is the fifth leading cause of death worldwide. Both caries and obesity substantially contribute to the global NCDs burden and share common risk factors including commercial determinants of health. However, the relationship between caries and obesity has been inconsistently reported and it has been suggested that sex may play a role. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the sex-specific association bet

Intersectionality on the perception of health in two cross-national surveys (WVS and EVS).

This article focuses on the health perceptions of people across social strata and nations using the combined dataset of the World Values Survey and the European Values Study (EVS/WVS). An intercategorical intersectional analysis model was developed to examine the social determinants underlying differences in health perceptions. Using logistic regression of the interactions between sex, age, level of educational attainment and income, we calculated the impact of these variables (main effects) and their interactions within the intersecting categories on health perceptions. The group with the bes

Coresidence with a child and happiness among older widows in Europe: Does gender of the child matter?

Both coresidence patterns and the reported well-being of older people vary widely across Europe for a variety of economic, cultural, and historical factors. We investigate how far 2 indicators of well-being, happiness and life satisfaction, vary according to whether or not older women live with their children and, in particular, with son(s) or daughter(s). We compare outcomes for women who are unpartnered widows, the great majority of whom will have had children, so those with and without coresident children may be compared. We use data for 34 countries in Europe by combining 7 waves of the Eu

Visual impairment and blindness in Europe and their prevention.

The European region currently differs in many aspects, such as political, socioeconomic, and geographical. After substantial political changes at the beginning of the 1990s, the majority of central and eastern European countries started to rebuild their healthcare systems. It is apparent that eastern Europe represents a highly diverse region where the difference among countries broadens year after year. In highly industrialised countries of Europe, the leading causes of childhood serious visual loss are lesions of the central nervous system, congenital anomalies and retinal disorders. In the m

Resilience and Adaptation Among Ukrainians Across Two Cross-Sectional Measurements Amid Prolonged Conflict.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine transitioned from an "existential war" into a "war of attrition." The study assessed the impact of prolonged conflict on resilience and coping mechanisms through two cross-sectional assessments conducted with independent samples (Sample 1 - July 2022 [N = 1001]; Sample 2 - November 2023 [N = 2247]). The respondents completed a quantitative questionnaire during the war, which included individual, community, and societal resilience, hope, sense of danger, perceived threats, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A significant decrease in all variables was found

Genetic landscape of Romanian children with inborn errors of immunity via gene panels, exome, and genome sequencing.

Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) are monogenic disorders with a wide spectrum of clinical phenotypes including immune dysregulation, autoimmunity, autoinflammation, and malignancy. IEI may have life-threatening consequences, thus precise and timely genetic diagnosis is crucial for improved access to treatment, genetic counselling and prevention. We aimed to investigate the genotypic findings in a cohort of children with IEI from Romania, in order to understand the diagnostic yield of genetic testing, genetic characterization of IEI and impact of genetic diagnosis. Clinical and genetic investiga

Psychological and somatic distress profiles in young adults in and out of conflict settings: a cluster-based analysis of three population-based studies in Ukraine and Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Young adulthood is a developmental period characterized by major life transitions and increased exposure to stress, during which vulnerability to psychological and somatic symptoms may be heightened. These symptoms frequently co-occur, posing challenges for diagnostic and treatment approaches. Despite the mental and physical symptom burden among young adults, population-based data on symptom patterns in this age group remains sparse. This study investigates psychological and somatic symptom patterns among young adults in three populations with differing socio-geographic and war-rel

Mental health, psychological wellbeing, and coping with stress by Ukrainian war refugees staying in Poland.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict has led to the large-scale displacement of over one million Ukrainian citizens, predominantly women and children, seeking protection in Poland. This necessitates a rigorous investigation into the factors associated with psychological conditions and adaptive coping mechanisms employed by this vulnerable population. METHODS: This quantitative, online survey study comprised a sample of N = 290 adult participants (91.7% female, mean age 43.6 years). Due to the small number of male participants (n = 24, 8.3%), gender was not included as a variable
