BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis is a parasitic disease, caused by the larval stage of the genus Echinococcus. Echinococcus multilocularis and Echinococcus granulosus cause alveolar echinococcosis (AE) and cystic echinococcosis (CE) in humans. Pathologists may be confronted with the larval stage of both species. Diagnosis may be difficult due to the low incidence in daily routine. However, right diagnosis of the pathologist is still the gold standard and crucial for further treatment of the patient.
SUMMARY: Macroscopically, specimens of AE show multiple small cysts and a bread-like appearance. Ins

Cystic echinococcosis or hydatid disease is one of the most important zoonotic parasitic diseases caused by Echinococcus granulosus, a small tapeworm harbored in the intestine of canines. There is an urgent need for applied genetic research to understand the mechanisms of pathogenesis and disease control and prevention. However, the lack of an effective gene evaluation system impedes direct interpretation of the functional genetics of cestode parasites, including the Echinococcus species. The present study demonstrates the potential of lentiviral gene transient transduction in the metacestode

Cystic echinococcosis is a globally distributed zoonotic disease, which is caused by the larval stage of Echinococcosus granulosus sensu lato. The chemotherapy of the disease is limited to the use of benzimidazoles. Recently, mefloquine and its analogues, aminoalcohol-carbazole, and some amino alcohol derivatives were reported to display inhibitory effects on parasites. Here, the activities of 130 amino alcohol compounds against E. granulosus were tested on protoscoleces and germinal cells at a concentration of 20 μg/ml over a period of three days. As a result, sixteen compounds totally were e

Echinococcus granulosus (sensu lato) is now recognized as an assemblage of cryptic species, which differ considerably in morphology, development, host specificity (including infectivity/pathogenicity for humans) and other aspects. One of these species, E. granulosus sensu stricto (s.s.), is now clearly identified as the principal agent causing cystic echinococcosis in humans. Previous studies of a small section of the cox1 and nadh1 genes identified two variants of E. granulosus s.s. to be present in Australia; however, no further work has been carried out to characterize the microdiversity of

An epidemiological and molecular survey on the occurrence of Echinococcus hydatid cysts in livestock was conducted in Greece. In total 898 sheep, 483 goats, 38 buffaloes, 273 wild boars and 15 deer were examined and 30.2% (6.45% cyst fertility), 7.86% (3.2% cyst fertility), 42% (7.9% cyst fertility), 1.1% (0% cyst fertility), 0% of them were found infected, respectively. Infection rate in different geographical regions varied between 26.1 and 53.8% (cyst fertility 2.04 and 34.6%) in sheep, 7.33 and 13.3% (cyst fertility 0 and 3.2%) in goats. Genotyping, based on cox1 and nad1 analyses, demonst

INTRODUCTION: Cystic echinococcosis is a globally distributed zoonotic disease of great medical and veterinary importance, which is caused by the cestode Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. In Ukraine, two areas of the prominent circulation of the parasite are established, the southern steppe zone with sheep as the main transmitter, and the northern forest-steppe zone and Polissia, where pigs are mainly responsible for maintaining the E. granulosus transmission.
METHODS: Given that only a few studies have so far addressed the genetic diversity of the parasite in Ukraine, we have sequenced par

BACKGROUND: Hydatid cyst disease, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, primarily affects the liver and lungs, but it can also develop in rare locations such as the kidneys, thyroid, subcutaneous tissues, bones, and the mediastinum. These atypical presentations often pose diagnostic challenges, as they can mimic benign and malignant pathologies, leading to potential misdiagnoses and inappropriate treatments. Early and accurate detection of hydatid cysts in uncommon sites is crucial for optimal patient management.
CASE SUMMARY: This case report series presents five patients with hydatid cysts loc

BACKGROUND: Dogs play a pivotal role in the transmission of cystic echinococcosis (CE), a zoonosis caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. We showed previously that dogs vaccinated with two E. granulosus adult-worm specific proteins, EgM9 and EgM123, emulsified with Freund's adjuvants induced significant protective efficacy in terms of reduction in worm burden and egg production after 45 days post-infection. It was not known whether this protection can be sustained using adjuvants suitable for use in dogs.
METHODS: Recombinant EgM9 and EgM123 were mixed with Quil A or ISCOMs for vacci

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus is one of the most major infectious diseases in north-west highland of China. E. granulosus sensu strict, E. multilocularis, and E. canadensis are known to be the only three species related to human health transmitting in the areas. To achieve targeted treatment and control of echinococcosis, the accurate identification and discrimination of the species are important. However, currently the available diagnostic approaches do not present ideal results either in accuracy or efficiency.
METHODS: In the study, a set of primers were designed to aim

The cystic echinococcosis (CE) is an important zoonotic disease caused by the parasite Echinococcus spp. In Brazil, this parasite is present in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) state, border with Argentina and Uruguay, causing several damages to human and animal health. This study aimed to identify Echinococcus spp. in hydatid cysts of swine and evaluate the similarity of the genotypes through the phylogenetic analysis. A total of 3,101,992 swine were slaughtered in the central/northern region of RS/Brazil, during 2008-2012. Five isolates were characterized as hydatid cyst by molecular analysis, based o

In endemic regions, intra-orbital hydatid cysts are a rare manifestation of Echinococcus granulosus infection, classically disturbing the liver and lungs. This report details a patient's case with an intra-orbital cyst presenting. Diagnostic imaging revealed a cystic lesion causing optic nerve displacement. Serology confirmed echinococcosis. Surgical excision was performed, resulting in proptosis resolution but subsequent exophoria and visual acuity reduction due to surgical complications. Orbital hydatid cysts are considered diagnostic challenges due to symptom overlap with other pathologies.

The main goal of the paper is to clarify anthelminthic treatment as an alternative hydatic cyst therapy, its indications and contraindications. Chemotherapy constitutes a non-invasive treatment and is less limited by the patient's status than surgery or PAIR. Many investigators have employed benzoimidazole carbonates for the management of human hydatid disease. Both, albendazole and mebendazole have, a favourable effect in patients suffering from multiorgan and multicystic disease, in inoperable primary liver or lung echinococcosis, and they can also prevent secondary echinococcosis. Echinococcus granulosus infection is a problem of public health in livestock-rearing regions of Latin America, like in Peru. This species is characterized by the morphometry of the large and small rostellar hooks in both metacestodes and adult worms. The aim of this work was to study biometrical characteristics of rostellar hooks in hydatid cysts (lung and liver) from some Peruvian provinces (Arequipa, Cuzco, Huancavelica, Junin and Puno). The biometrical analysis was obtained in a digital system for image analysis. The following parameters were studied: area, perimeter, length and width total

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy of cystic echinococcosis became a treatment option 25 years ago, when new anthelminthic drugs were introduced. Benzimidazole carbamates were shown to kill the entire metacestode stage of the parasite, and praziquantel exhibited an effect on protoscoleces. Continuous or intermittent treatment with albendazole is recommended for a period of up to 6 months, and praziquantel may enhance the effect, in particular in the case of cyst spillage. Degenerative changes in the cysts occur in approximately 75% of the patients by the end of the treatment period. Benzimidazoles have

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a global zoonotic disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus, posing a great threat to human and animal health. MiRNAs are small regulatory noncoding RNA involved in the pathogenesis of parasitic diseases, possibly via exosomes. Egr-miR-71 has been identified as one of the miRNAs in the blood of CE patients, but its secretory characteristics and functions remains unclear. Herein, we studied the secretory and biological activity of exosomal egr-miR-71 and its immunoregulatory functions in sheep peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Our results showed that egr-

Echinococcosis occurs mainly in areas with heavy livestock farming, such as Central Asia, America, and Australia. Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) infection causes echinococcosis in intermediate hosts, such as sheep, cattle, goats, camels, and horses. Numerous cases of echinococcosis occur in Uzbekistan as stock farming is a primary industry. Epidemiological and genetic studies of E. granulosus s.l. are very important for mitigating its impact on public health and the economy; however, there are no such studies on E. granulosus s.l. in Uzbekistan. In the present study, to determine wh
