Evaluation of tricuspid incompetence has benefitted considerably from the development of Doppler ultrasound. Three patients with vascular sling were studied by two-dimensional and color Doppler echocardiography and angiocardiography. In order to evaluate the usefulness of Doppler echocardiography (continuous wave) in the assessment of obstructive cardiopathies, we studied the patients with pulmonary or aortic valvar stenosis examined from January 1988 to August 1989 in our Hospital. Doppler echocardiographic studies were performed on 35 patients, 19 with pulmonary valvar stenosis and 16 children with aortic valvar stenosis. Pulmonary flow was recorded from the left parasternal position (3-4 intercostal space) and aortic flow from the right parasternal position (3-4 intercostal space), apical and suprasternal notch window.

In a one-year period, 33 infants with a systolic cardiac murmur were examined by Doppler-echocardiography. Pulsed Doppler echocardiography (PDE) is a technique for evaluating blood flow characteristics at specific locations within the heart and great vessels. Because this method assesses blood flow rather than cardiac structures, PDE complements the findings of M-mode echocardiography. A new on-line graphical method for displaying pulsed Doppler information provides 1) a printed, permanent record of flow information, 2) precise timing of blood flow events, and 3) information on the direction of flow in the heart and great vessels.

Thirty-two horses with cardiac murmurs typical of tricuspid, mitral and aortic regurgitation were studied using colour flow Doppler echocardiography. Thirty-nine elderly patients, mean age 77 years (range 65 to 96), with ejection systolic murmurs were studied to evaluate the functional significance of these murmurs.
