Perinatal echovirus infection: insights from a literature review of 61 cases of serious infection and 16 outbreaks in nurseries.

A review of literature published before June 1985 revealed 61 reported cases of neonatal echovirus infection at a nonmucosal site, including 43 cases (70%) due to echovirus 11. Onset of disease occurred between the third and fifth days of life in 63% of cases, indicating that most infections are acquired in the immediate perinatal period rather than in utero. Mortality was higher in infants with severe hepatitis (83%) than in infants with infection of the central nervous system (19%). Acute illness occurred within one week before delivery in 68% of the mothers of nonnosocomially infected infan

Neonatal Type I diabetes associated with maternal echovirus 6 infection: a case report.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Neonatal diabetes mellitus is rare, and it has not been associated with beta-cell autoimmunity. Enteroviral infections during pregnancy have been implicated as a risk factor for the later development of Type I (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. We now report of a baby girl who was born severely growth-retarded with neonatal insulin-deficient diabetes, and look for evidence of intrauterine enteroviral infections and beta-cell targeted autoimmunity. METHODS: Diabetes-associated autoimmunity was studied by measurement of several types of islet cell reactive autoantibodies. T

Echovirus 30 infection and aseptic meningitis in parents of children attending a child care center.

In July 1992, 13 parents with children attending a child care center (CCC) developed aseptic meningitis (AM) due to echovirus 30 (E30). To determine the extent of illness and risk factors for transmission, survey and blood specimens were collected from CCC families and teachers and from adult and pediatric controls. Infection was defined as the presence of anti-E30 IgM antibodies. CCC parents (60%, 67/111) and children (75%, 79/105) had significantly higher infection rates than did teachers (14%, 3/22), adult controls (24%, 10/41), and pediatric controls (24%, 17/70). Infected CCC parents had

Survey of diagnostic and typing capacity for enterovirus infection in Italy and identification of two echovirus 30 outbreaks.

BACKGROUND: Enterovirus infections can cause a variety of illnesses, ranging from asymptomatic infections to severe illness and death. AIM: To support polio eradication activities, in February 2019, the WHO Regional Reference Laboratory for polio in Italy, at the National Institute of Public Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità), promoted an investigation on non-polio enterovirus laboratory capacity, with the support of the Italian Ministry of Health. The aim was to collect data on the assays used routinely for diagnostic purposes and to characterize enterovirus outbreaks strains by sequence

Cumulative mutations in the genome of Echovirus 6 during establishment of a chronic infection in precursors of glial cells.

Although Enteroviruses are mainly described as responsible for acute diseases, their role in severe chronic pathology has been also established. Echovirus 6-like sequences have been detected by PCR analysis in central nervous system specimens from patients presenting with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. These findings suggested a persistent infection with viruses that underwent, genetic changes precluding viral particle release. To support this hypothesis, we developed a model system of Echovirus 6 chronic infection in precursors of glial cells. The nucleotide sequences of the 5'non-translated

Disseminated echovirus infection in a patient with multiple myeloma and a functional defect in complement. Treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin.

A man with IgG1 multiple myeloma developed fever, confusion, and progressive muscle weakness resulting in paralysis. Echovirus type 11 was isolated from cerebrospinal fluid, pleura, pleural fluid, and muscle, and muscle biopsy disclosed changes consistent with viral myositis. Immunologic evaluation revealed low serum levels of polyclonal IgG subtypes 1 and 3, reduced blood levels of T-helper/inducer and T-suppressor/cytotoxic cells, and a complement abnormality involving the function of the classical pathway C3 convertase, C4b2a. Therapy with intravenous immunoglobulin was associated with clin

Echovirus-30 Infection Alters Host Proteins in Lipid Rafts at the Cerebrospinal Fluid Barrier In Vitro.

Echovirus-30 (E-30) is a non-polio enterovirus responsible for meningitis outbreaks in children worldwide. To gain access to the central nervous system (CNS), E-30 first has to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) or the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB). E-30 may use lipid rafts of the host cells to interact with and to invade the BCSFB. To study enteroviral infection of the BCSFB, an established in vitro model based on human immortalized brain choroid plexus papilloma (HIBCPP) cells has been used. Here, we investigated the impact of E-30 infection on the protein content of the lipid r

An outbreak of concurrent echovirus 30 and coxsackievirus A1 infections associated with sea swimming among a group of travelers to Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Enteroviruses are shed in human stool and can cause a wide spectrum of illness. They are the leading cause of aseptic meningitis. METHODS: In 2004, the Connecticut Department of Public Health investigated a meningitis cluster among persons returning from a school-organized trip to Mexico. RESULTS: Among 29 travelers (25 teenagers and 4 adult chaperones), 21 became acutely ill. Viral culture and nucleic acid amplification testing of stool (n=27) and cerebrospinal fluid (n=4) specimens identified enteroviral infection in 20 of 28 travelers from whom any specimen was obtained; 4 had

Fatal Neonatal Echovirus 11 Infection Following Maternal Peripartum Illness: A Case Report with Literature Review.

Neonatal Echovirus 11 (E-11) infection acquired perinatally often manifests as a severe, sepsis-like illness with rapid clinical deterioration within the first week of life. The infection is characterized by fulminant multiorgan failure, commonly involving severe hepatitis with coagulopathy, myocarditis, and meningoencephalitis. Adverse outcomes are strongly associated with prematurity and vertical transmission from a mother with an acute peripartum infection, which precludes the transfer of protective serotype-specific antibodies. We present a fatal case of E-11 sepsis in a late preterm neona

Aseptic meningitis among members of a high school football team. An outbreak associated with echovirus 16 infection.

During the period Sept 1 through Oct 1, 1978, an outbreak of enteroviral illness affected 43 (70%) of the 61 members of a high school football team. Thirty-three (54%) had symptoms of aseptic meningitis, a diagnosis confirmed for each of seven players hospitalized. Echovirus 16 was recovered from a throat swab of one hospitalized player and from the CSF of another. Enteroviruses isolated from stool specimens taken after the illness from other ill players and from stool specimens of non-ill team members were also identified as echovirus 16. A survey among students not on the team showed an atta

Echovirus 6 Infects Human Exocrine and Endocrine Pancreatic Cells and Induces Pro-Inflammatory Innate Immune Response.

Human enteroviruses (HEV), especially coxsackievirus serotype B (CVB) and echovirus (E), have been associated with diseases of both the exocrine and endocrine pancreas, but so far evidence on HEV infection in human pancreas has been reported only in islets and ductal cells. This study aimed to investigate the capability of echovirus strains to infect human exocrine and endocrine pancreatic cells. Infection of explanted human islets and exocrine cells with seven field strains of E6 caused cytopathic effect, virus titer increase and production of HEV protein VP1 in both cell types. Virus particl

Polar Infection of Echovirus-30 Causes Differential Barrier Affection and Gene Regulation at the Blood-Cerebrospinal Fluid Barrier.

Echovirus-30 (E-30) is responsible for the extensive global outbreaks of meningitis in children. To gain access to the central nervous system, E-30 first has to cross the epithelial blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier. Several meningitis causing bacteria preferentially infect human choroid plexus papilloma (HIBCPP) cells in a polar fashion from the basolateral cell side. Here, we investigated the polar infection of HIBCPP cells with E-30. Both apical and basolateral infections caused a significant decrease in the transepithelial electrical resistance of HIBCPP cells. However, to reach the same i
