Multiomics Insights into the Ecotoxicological Effects of Soil Microplastics on Crop Plants.

Microplastics (MPs) have become pervasive contaminants. This is due to plastic mulching, wastewater irrigation, and sludge application. Concentrations of MPs in intensive farming regions have been recorded at 41,741 particles/kg. MPs are absorbed by crop roots and leaves and then travel to reproductive organs. In these organs, they cause oxidative stress, genotoxicity, and toxicity, which disrupts nutrient uptake, photosynthesis, and crop yield. This review summarizes 20 years (2003-2024) of studies on MP-distribution in soil-crop systems and their phytotoxicity mechanisms, highlighting the pi

Ecotoxicological effects of traditional and emerging microplastics on marine zooplankton: A review.

Microplastics (MPs) are widespread and persistent pollutants in marine environments, raising global ecological concerns. Zooplankton are a critical group for assessing the broader ecosystem effects of MPs, as their ingestion of MPs can disrupt energy transfer across trophic levels. The toxicity of MPs is influenced by a range of physicochemical characteristics, including particle size, shape, degree of weathering, polymer composition, surface functional groups, incorporated additives, and interactions with other contaminants in the water column. Despite this complexity, studies that systematic

Assessing the ecotoxicological effects of pesticides on non-target plant species.

Over the past two decades, pesticide use has increased globally, with over 91% of crops in the EU being treated. While pesticides improve crop yields, they also pose environmental risks. They can affect non-target plants by inhibiting germination, suppressing growth, and impairing photosynthesis. Pesticide drift, runoff, and soil contamination may expose wild plant communities to sublethal concentrations, potentially disrupting biodiversity and ecosystem stability. This study examined the effects of commonly used pesticides in European agriculture on non-target plant species. Six active ingred

Ecotoxicological Effects of Potassium Dichromate on the Tadpole Shrimp Triops longicaudatus.

The tadpole shrimp Triops longicaudatus is a freshwater crustacean with fast embryonic and larval development, short life cycle, and high fecundity. They are very active swimmers of a reasonable size, easy to spot and record. Such characteristics make it a promising candidate as an experimental model in ecotoxicology to evaluate the effects of aquatic pollutants, particularly using its locomotor behavior as an endpoint. To evaluate the sensitivity of T. longicaudatus and develop endpoints of interest, we conducted exposure experiments with lethal and sub-lethal concentrations of potassium dich

Ecotoxicological characterization of emissions from steel coatings in contact with water.

In order to prevent corrosion damage, steel structures need to be protected. Coating systems achieve this by the isolation of the steel from its environment. Common binding agents are epoxide and polyurethane resins which harden by polyaddition reactions. In contact with water, various organic substances might be leached out and released into the aquatic environment potentially causing adverse effects. So far, no legal requirements are mandatory for the environmental sustainability of coating systems. To characterize emissions from steel coatings, recommendations for the ecotoxicological asses

Ecotoxicological effects of lanthanum in Mytilus galloprovincialis: Biochemical and histopathological impacts.

Inappropriate processing and disposal of electronic waste contributes to the contamination of aquatic systems by various types of pollutants such as the rare-earth elements (REE) in which lanthanum (La) is included. Knowledge on the toxicity of these elements in marine organisms is still scarce when compared to other metals such as mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As). Therefore, this study aims to assess the toxicity of La on the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, considered a good bioindicator of aquatic pollution, through the analysis of metabolic, oxidative stress, neurotoxicity and histopathologi

Combined ecotoxicological risk assessment in the frame of European authorization of pesticides.

Organisms are frequently exposed to mixtures of chemical contaminants in the environment, causing a potential "cocktail effect", or combined effect. The joint action of different molecules with similar or different modes of action could result in a potentially unlimited number of additives, synergistic or antagonistic combinations. Since the large number of contaminants makes it impossible to perform ecotoxicity tests for each potential mixture, a robust approach for prospective environmental risk assessment of chemical mixtures is needed. A number of recent publications by the European Commis

Location-specific ecotoxicological risk assessment of metal-polluted soils.

When chemical analysis indicates metal pollution, a second-tier method is needed to evaluate whether toxic effects occur at the polluted sites. A method based on pollution-induced community tolerance (PICT) was developed using samples taken from locations polluted with sewage more than 20 years ago. Microorganisms extracted from soil samples were exposed to a concentration range of zinc, nickel, copper, chromium (III), or chromium (VI) salts in a buffer suspension. The remaining activity of the intoxicated microorganisms was determined by color formation with 31 different organic substrates in

Ecotoxicological studies and risk assessment on the cyanide contamination in Tisza river.

As a result of the dam failure of January 30, 2000 in Rumania, water and a huge amount of sediment contaminated with cyanide and later heavy metals entered the Tisza river system. In order to determine the chronic consequences of the contamination, periphyton and sediment samples were collected from River Tisza and her tributaries over the next 2 years. After flooding periods, the sediment deposited in the foreshore was also sampled. Applying the ICP-AES analysis method, the amounts of major heavy metals in the periphyton and sediment samples were measured, and the related concentration factor

Screening concentrations for ecotoxicological assessment of soils contaminated with explosives residues.

Many sites associated with ongoing environmental input of munition residues in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, as well as those that involve munition manufacturing, disposal, testing, and training, contain elevated levels of explosives, propellants, and related energetic materials (EM) in soil. We developed, compiled, and reviewed the ecotoxicological benchmarks to establish scientifically defensible soil invertebrate-based and terrestrial plant-based soil-screening concentrations (SSC) for eleven EMs and common transformation products. These SSCs were derived using concentrations that pro

Chiral resolution of profoxydim: Implications for herbicidal efficacy and ecotoxicological assessment.

Chiral pesticides may exhibit stereoselective differences in biological activity, toxicity, and environmental behaviour, making the assessment of individual stereoisomers increasingly important for improving pesticide efficacy and reducing environmental risks. Profoxydim, a widely used cyclohexanedione herbicide for rice cultivation, contains two chiral centres and is commercialized as a mixture of four stereoisomers, although the biological and ecotoxicological properties of each stereoisomer remain largely unknown. A robust analytical method was developed for the quantification and isolation

Ecotoxicological Effects of Conventional and Eco-Friendly Glitter: A Literature Review.

Glitter is a distinctive and largely overlooked form of primary microplastic. Unlike more commonly studied microplastics, glitter particles are typically flat, highly reflective, multi-layered, and are composed of polymers such as polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl chloride with metallic coatings and a wide range of additives. In response to regulatory restrictions on intentionally added microplastics and increasing consumer demand, "eco-friendly" alternatives based on modified regenerated cellulose, cellulose nanocrystals, or mica have been introduced, although their environmental safety r

Ecotoxicological effects of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in aquatic organisms: A review.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are found throughout the environment due to their chemical stability. Their widespread use in industrial and consumer products has resulted in their frequent detection in aquatic environments, making them contaminants of significant concern. Recent studies focus on the adverse effects of PFAS on aquatic organisms in an effort to elucidate their toxic mechanisms and physiological changes. Here, we comprehensively review the major effects of PFAS on aquatic organisms, including general toxicity, metabolic disruption, and microbiome alterations, and expl

Effects of trichlorfon on ecotoxicological biomarkers in farmed Colossoma macropomum (tambaqui).

Producers of fish have been looking for viable alternatives for the management of Colossoma macropomum (tambaqui) in confinement systems in order to avoid the harm and subsequent losses caused by parasitic diseases. One alternative used by farmers is pesticides, such as trichlorfon, which has a genotoxic effect. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the changes in gene expression due to the side effects of trichlorfon in tambaqui. Two treatments were used based on LC50-96h of 0.870 mg/L using 30% and 50% trichlorfon with exposure periods of 48, 72 and 96 h. For differential expression of the gene

Quantification and ecotoxicological contribution of volatile compounds in produced water effluents.

Produced water (PW) is a significant byproduct of offshore oil and gas production, constituting a major waste stream in the North Sea. Existing regulations address only the dispersed aliphatic hydrocarbon content in PW, and limited attention is given to other potentially hazardous compounds, including benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylene (BTEX), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phenols, water-soluble petroleum constituents as well as production-related chemicals. In this study, Danish oil production PW samples were subjected to purge and trap extraction on granular activated carb

Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model in ecotoxicological studies: A post-genomics perspective.

The budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae represents a well-consolidated and widely used eukaryotic model, with a number of features that make it an ideal organism to carry out functional toxicological studies. Several advantages are permitted by the use of yeast cells, as the possibility to identify molecular biomarkers, unknown mechanisms of action and novel potential targets. Thanks to the evolutionary conservation, yeast can provide also useful clues allowing the prioritization of more complex analyses and toxicity predictions in higher eukaryotes. The last two decades were incredibly fru

Disposal of dredged sediments in tropical soils: ecotoxicological effects on earthworms.

The upper limit concentrations of metals established by international legislations for dredged sediment disposal and soil quality do not take into consideration the properties of tropical soils (generally submitted to more intense weathering processes) on metal availability and ecotoxicity. Aiming to perform an evaluation on the suitability of these threshold values in tropical regions, the ecotoxicity of metal-contaminated dredged sediment from the Guanabara Bay (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) was investigated. Acute and avoidance tests with Eisenia andrei were performed with mixtures of dredged sed

Baia Mare accident--brief ecotoxicological report of Czech experts.

On 30 January 2000, following the breach in the tailing dam of the Aurul SA Baia Mare Co., a major spill of about 100,000 m(3) of cyanide and metal-rich liquid waste was released into the river system near Baia Mare in northwest Romania. The pollutants flowed via different tributaries into the Tizsa (Tisa) river and finally through the Danube river into the Black Sea. Along the way pollutants (especially cyanides) caused rapid death of aquatic organisms and animals living close to the poisoned rivers. Following request from the governments of Romania, Hungary, and the Federal Republic of Yugos
