An exploratory study on differences in maternal care between two ecotypes of Nigerian indigenous chicken hens.

The Yoruba (YRE) and Fulani (FLE) are the two notable indigenous chicken ecotypes in Nigeria. They exhibit broodiness and post-hatch care of their chicks. Studies on welfare, productivity, and maternal behaviors of these two ecotypes are scarce, hence the need for this study. Separate flocks of these ecotypes were housed intensively and hens that showed broodiness (ten YRE and five FLE) were monitored. Brooding behaviors were monitored for 3 days in the 1st and 2nd weeks of brooding and daily in the 3rd week of brooding for 6 h/day (07:00-09:00 h, 11:00-13:00 h, and 15:00-17:00 h). During broo

Mapping therapy-responsive immune ecotypes in clear cell renal cell carcinoma through integrative omics.

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is a kidney cancer in which immune activity is closely intertwined with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) loss, hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) signaling, angiogenesis, hypoxia, and metabolic adaptation. Although immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-based regimens have changed the treatment landscape of advanced ccRCC, only a subset of patients achieve durable benefit. Commonly used biomarkers, such as programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression, tumor mutation burden (TMB), and broad inflammatory gene signatures, have not been sufficient to explain this variation or

Profiling of rare immune cell populations and integrative analysis identify immune ecotypes in newly diagnosed meningiomas.

Meningiomas (MGMs) are the most common primary intracranial tumors in adults with a substantial subset exhibiting aggressive clinical behavior. Immunotherapy represents a potential alternative treatment option, even though MGMs have traditionally been considered “immunologically cold” tumors. This study explored less characterized immune cell subsets —B cells, natural killer (NK) cells, and granulocytes— and their associations with major immune cell populations as well as their prognostic implications. For this purpose, we performed tissue cytometry analysis in a clinically well-annotated mult

Genomic, morphological and physiological data support fast ecotypic differentiation and incipient speciation in an alpine diving beetle.

An intricate interplay between evolutionary and demographic processes has frequently resulted in complex patterns of genetic and phenotypic diversity in alpine lineages, posing serious challenges to species delimitation and biodiversity conservation planning. Here we integrate genomic data, geometric morphometric analyses and thermal tolerance experiments to explore the role of Pleistocene climatic changes and adaptation to alpine environments on patterns of genomic and phenotypic variation in diving beetles from the taxonomically complex Agabus bipustulatus species group. Genetic structure an

Nutritional Content and Antioxidant Capacity of the Seed and the Epicarp in Different Ecotypes of Pistacia atlantica Desf. Subsp. atlantica.

Phenolic compounds are secondary metabolites that occur naturally in all plants. Seeds are among the richest organs of plants in phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals. These compounds and their biological activities are of great importance for human health. This study aimed to analyze the phenolic composition and their antioxidant activity in the seeds and epicarps of six Algerian populations of Pistacia atlantica Desf. subsp. atlantica growing along an aridity gradient from semi-arid to Saharan environmental conditions. Higher phenolic contents were observed in epicarp compared to seeds whate

Comparative Proteomic Analysis of Plant-Pathogen Interactions in Resistant and Susceptible Poplar Ecotypes Infected with Botryosphaeria dothidea.

Poplar are important forestry species in China, but the Botryosphaeria dothidea pathogen causes serious economic losses worldwide. To identify candidate B. dothidea resistance proteins and explore the molecular mechanisms involved in poplar-pathogen interactions, proteomic responses of stem samples from resistant and susceptible poplar ecotypes to B. dothidea were investigated using nanoflow liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry with label-free quantitative analysis. We identified 588 proteins, divided into 21 biological process categories including 48 oxidoreductases, 72 hydrolytic e

Genome-wide SNP data suggest complex ancestry of sympatric North Pacific killer whale ecotypes.

Three ecotypes of killer whale occur in partial sympatry in the North Pacific. Individuals assortatively mate within the same ecotype, resulting in correlated ecological and genetic differentiation. A key question is whether this pattern of evolutionary divergence is an example of incipient sympatric speciation from a single panmictic ancestral population, or whether sympatry could have resulted from multiple colonisations of the North Pacific and secondary contact between ecotypes. Here, we infer multilocus coalescent trees from >1000 nuclear single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and find ev

Comparison of structural variants in the whole genome sequences of two Medicago truncatula ecotypes: Jemalong A17 and R108.

BACKGROUND: Structural variants (SVs) constitute a large proportion of the genomic variation that results in phenotypic variation in plants. However, they are still a largely unexplored feature in most plant genomes. Here, we present the whole-genome landscape of SVs between two model legume Medicago truncatula ecotypes-Jemalong A17 and R108- that have been extensively used in various legume biology studies. RESULTS: To catalogue SVs, we first resolved the previously published R108 genome assembly (R108 v1.0) to chromosome-scale using 124 × Hi-C data, resulting in a high-quality genome assemb

Changes in whistle parameters of two common bottlenose dolphin ecotypes as a result of the physical presence of the research vessel.

In the presence of vessels, dolphins have been found to change their habitat, behavior, group composition and whistle repertoire. The modification of the whistle parameters is generally considered to be a response to the engine noise. Little is known about the impact of the physical presence of vessels on dolphin acoustics. Whistle parameters of the coastal and oceanic ecotypes of common bottlenose dolphins in La Paz Bay, Mexico, were measured after the approach of the research vessel and its engine shutdown. Recordings of 10 min were made immediately after turning off the engine. For analysis

Differences in resistance to Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum infection among indigenous local chicken ecotypes in Tanzania.

A study was conducted to evaluate the disease resistance potential in 105 chickens of six indigenous local chicken ecotypes in Tanzania by orally challenging 1-week-old chicks with 2.5 x 10(8) colony-forming units of virulent S. Gallinarum. For 14 days post infection, clinical signs, necropsy findings, antibody titres, packed cell volume, leukocyte population count, and viable bacterial cell counts in the liver and spleen were recorded. Clinical signs were recorded daily but other parameters were recorded on the day of infection, then on days 3, 6, 10 and 14 after infection. Clinical signs of

Distribution of vectors, transmission indices and microfilaria rates of subperiodic Wuchereria bancrofti in relation to village ecotypes in Samoa.

Aedes polynesiensis and Ae. samoanus biting densities and Wuchereria bancrofti infection and infective rates were studied in 47 villages throughout the islands of Samoa Upolu, Manono and Savaii during 1978-79, and microfilaria (mf) rates were surveyed in 28 of the villages. The mf rate was correlated with both infection and infective rates of Ae. polynesiensis in Upolu, but not of Ae. samoanus. In Upolu, Ae. polynesiensis was apparently the major vector. It was relatively more abundant in more cultivated and populated areas, along the northern coast of Upolu, except Apia town area. In Savaii,

Integrative single-cell analysis uncovers distinct tumour microenvironment ecotypes and immune evasion across skin cancers.

BACKGROUND: Skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), cutaneous melanoma (CM) and acral melanoma (AM), exhibit profound heterogeneity in clinical behaviour and therapeutic response. However, how tumour-immune ecosystems are remodelled across skin cancer types and disease stages, and how these changes influence immune escape and treatment resistance, remain poorly understood. METHODS: Here, we integrate single-cell transcriptomics data from 102 skin cancer samples (including adjacent normal skin, early-stage and advanced-stage tumours), with bulk RNA-se

Phenotypic Divergence and Genomic Architecture Between Parallel Ecotypes at Two Different Points on the Speciation Continuum in a Marine Snail.

Speciation is rarely observable directly. A way forward is to compare pairs of ecotypes that evolved in parallel in similar contexts but have reached different degrees of reproductive isolation. Such comparisons are possible in the marine snail Littorina saxatilis by contrasting barriers to gene flow between parallel ecotypes in Spain and Sweden. In both countries, divergent ecotypes have evolved to withstand either crab predation or wave action. Here, we explore transects spanning contact zones between the Crab and the Wave ecotypes using low-coverage whole-genome sequencing, morphological an

Spatiotemporal analyses of the pan-cancer single-cell landscape reveal widespread profibrotic ecotypes associated with tumor immunity.

The tumor microenvironment evolves during tumor development and influences the cells in the microenvironment to orchestrate a supportive environment for tumor growth. Here we collected 4,483,367 cells across 36 cancer types and constructed a pan-cancer resource named TabulaTIME. Our integrated analyses reveal that CTHRC1 is a hallmark of extracellular matrix-related cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) that are enriched in different cancer types. Spatiotemporal analyses further indicated that CTHRC1+ CAFs are located at the leading edge between the malignant and normal regions, potentially pre

Microbiome Differences Between Human Head and Body Lice Ecotypes Revealed by 16S RRNA Gene Amplicon Sequencing.

Human head lice and body lice (Pediculus humanus) are neglected ectoparasites. Head lice continue to be prevalent in children worldwide, and insecticide resistance in these insects has complicated their treatment. Meanwhile, body lice, which are most common in the developing world, are resurging among marginalized populations in developed nations. Today, the microbiome is being increasingly recognized as a key mediator of insect physiology. However, the microbial communities that inhabit human lice have remained unknown beyond only a few species of bacteria. Knowledge of the microbiomes of hea

Genetic Analyses of Response of Local Ghanaian Tanzanian Chicken Ecotypes to a Natural Challenge with Velogenic Newcastle Disease Virus.

Newcastle disease is a devastating poultry disease that often causes significant economic losses in poultry in the developing countries of Africa, Asia, as well as South and Central America. Velogenic Newcastle disease virus (NDV) outbreaks are associated with high mortalities, which can threaten household livelihoods, especially in the rural areas, and lead to loss of high-quality proteins in the form of meat and eggs, as well as household purchasing power. In this study, we exposed unvaccinated Ghanaian and Tanzanian chickens of six local ecotypes to velogenic NDV strains, measured NDV respo

Evolutionary Origin and Genetic Diversity of the Pannonian Ecotype of Apis mellifera carnica Colonies in Hungary Based on Mitochondrial DNA and Microsatellite Markers.

Honey bees are crucial to both the ecosystem and the economy. However, they are subject to different influences that can lead to a loss of genetic diversity. In this study, we used mitochondrial DNA information and nuclear microsatellite markers to compare worker individuals that strictly meet the morphological breed standard of the Pannonian bee in Hungary to those with morphological disorders (yellow color of the abdomen). Additionally, this study involves Carniolan colonies from two European countries and other bee subspecies as a reference group that might have crossed into the Pannonian b

Soil water stress alters differentially relative metabolic pathways affecting growth performance and metal uptake efficiency in a cadmium hyperaccumulator ecotype of Sedum alfredii.

Modeling plants for biomass production and metal uptake from surrounding environment is strongly dependent on the moisture content of soil. Therefore, experiments were conducted to find out how soil moisture affects the phenotypic traits, photosynthetic efficiency, metabolic profile, and metal accumulation in the hyperaccumulating ecotype of Sedum alfredii (S. alfredii). A total of six water potential gradients were set: 0 ~ -15 kPa (T1), -15 ~ -30 kPa (T2), -30 ~ -45 kPa (T3), -45 ~ -60 kPa (T4), -60 ~ -75 kPa (T5), and -75 ~ -90 kPa (T6).
