Pupillary light reflexes in premature infants prior to 30 weeks postmenstrual age.

Data regarding the pupillary responses in very premature neonates is scarce; what data exist, moreover, is not recent. The purpose of this pilot study is to collect data on direct and consensual pupillary light responses before 30 weeks postmenstrual age. Six neonates were studied. Mean pupillary size at rest was 3.6 +/- 0.4 mm. No direct or consensual responses to light were present in any of 12 eyes. Accurate information about pupillary reflexes in very premature neonates provides relevant information about the development of the visual and neurologic systems. Available information about the

Infantile progressive spinal muscular atrophy with ophthalmoplegia and pyramidal symptoms.

Two siblings presented with identical features of progressive peripheral paralysis of the lower motor neuron type, pyramidal signs, cranial nerve palsy which included external ocular palsy and deafness, and internal ocular palsy; both died before 1 year of age. Pathologic examination of the central nervous system in both patients revealed degeneration and loss of spinal and cranial nerve motor nuclei, including the oculomotor nucleus. In addition, there was degeneration of the Edinger-Westphal nuclei and demyelination of the corticospinal tract under the midbrain. Although spinal cord lesions

CNS cell groups projecting to the submandibular parasympathetic preganglionic neurons in the rat: a retrograde transneuronal viral cell body labeling study.

The retrograde transneuronal viral tracing method was used to study the CNS nuclei that innervate the parasympathetic preganglionic neurons controlling the submandibular gland in the rat. A genetically engineered beta-galactosidase expressing Bartha strain of pseudorabies virus (PRV) was injected into the submandibular gland of rats. After 4 days, PRV infected tissues were reacted with the Bluo-Gal substrate (halogenated indolyl-beta-D-galactoside) and labeled cell bodies were identified throughout the brain. In the medulla oblongata, cell body labeling was seen in the superior salivatory nucl

Cerebellar influence on parasympathetic neurones innervating intra-ocular muscles.

Previous work has suggested that cerebellum may control the size of the pupil and transmission in the pathway mediating the pupillary light reflex. In this work we found that electrical stimulation of the cerebellar nuclei (nucleus fastigius and nucleus interpositus bilaterally) evoked a discharge in the short ciliary nerves which innervate the intraocular muscles. The latency was 5.7 msec, which is short enough for a direct excitatory connexion from cerebellar efferents onto the preganglionic neurones in the Edinger-Westphal nucleus. These neurones are controlling the ciliary muscle of the le

Is there any sense in the Palisade endings of eye muscles?

Palisade endings (PEs), which are unique to the eye muscles, are associated with multiply innervated muscle fibers. They lie at the myotendinous junctions and form a cap around the muscle fiber tip. They are found in all animals investigated so far, but their function is not known. Recently, we demonstrated that cell bodies of PEs and tendon organs lie around the periphery of the oculomotor nucleus in the C- and S-groups. A morphological analysis of these peripheral neurons revealed the existence of different populations within the C-group. We propose that a small group of round or spindle-sha

The effects of red surrounds on visual magnocellular and parvocellular cortical processing and perception.

More than 50 years ago, Hubel and Wiesel identified a subpopulation of geniculate magnocellular (M) neurons that are suppressed by diffuse red light. Since then, many human psychophysical studies have used red and green backgrounds to study the effects of M suppression on visual task performance, as a means to better understand neurodevelopmental disorders such as dyslexia and schizophrenia. Few of these studies have explicitly assessed the relative effects of red backgrounds on the M and P (parvocellular) pathways. Here we compared the effects of red and green diffuse background illumination

Fos induction in selective hypothalamic neuroendocrine and medullary nuclei by intravenous injection of urocortin and corticotropin-releasing factor in rats.

CRF and urocortin, administrated systemically, exert peripheral biological actions which may be mediated by brain pathways. We identified brain neuronal activation induced by intravenous (i.v.) injection of CRF and urocortin in conscious rats by monitoring Fos expression 60 min later. Both peptides (850 pmol/kg, i.v.) increased the number of Fos immunoreactive cells in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus, supraoptic nucleus, central amygdala, nucleus tractus solitarius and area postrema compared with vehicle injection. Urocortin induced a 4-fold increase in the number of Fos-positi

Chick eyes under cycloplegia compensate for spectacle lenses despite six-hydroxy dopamine treatment.

PURPOSE: To test whether eye growth changes produced by spectacle lens wear are mediated by changes in ciliary muscle tonus in chicks. METHODS: Because there is evidence that deprivation myopia is based on a local-retinal mechanism in the eye that probably remains functional after cycloplegia as well as after ciliary ganglion or Edinger-Westphal lesions, none of these treatments provides insight into whether accommodation tonus is also important in the control of axial eye growth. Because 6-hydroxy dopamine (6-OHDA) suppresses deprivation myopia, to isolate growth changes mediated by accommod

Brainstem sources of input to the central mesencephalic reticular formation in the macaque.

Physiological studies indicate that the central mesencephalic reticular formation (cMRF) plays a role in gaze changes, including control of disjunctive saccades. Neuroanatomical studies have demonstrated strong interconnections with the superior colliculus, along with projections to extraocular motor nuclei, the preganglionic nucleus of Edinger-Westphal, the paramedian pontine reticular formation, nucleus raphe interpositus, medullary reticular formation and cervical spinal cord, as might be expected for a structure that is intimately involved in gaze control. However, the sources of input to

Dynamics of accommodative fatigue in rhesus monkeys and humans.

Changes in accommodative dynamics with repeated accommodation were studied in three anesthetized rhesus monkeys and two conscious humans. Maximum accommodation was centrally stimulated via the Edinger-Westphal nucleus in monkeys with a 4 s on, 4 s off paradigm (4 x 4) for 17 min, 4 x 1.5 for 27 min and 2 x 1 for 16 min. Humans accommodated repeatedly to visual targets (5 x 5; 5D and 2 x 2; 6D) for 30 min. In all cases, accommodation was sustained throughout. The anesthetized monkeys showed inter-individual variability in the extent of changes in accommodative dynamics over time while no system

Neurons in the monoaminergic nuclei of the rat and human central nervous system express FA1/dlk.

The gene DLK1 encodes a member of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) superfamily, delta-like (dlk). When exposed in vivo to the action of an unknown protease, this type 1 membrane protein generates a soluble peptide referred to as Fetal antigen 1 (FA1). By acting in juxtacrine as well as paracrine/autocrine manners, both forms have been shown to be active in the differentiation/proliferation process of various cell types. In adults, FA1/dlk has been demonstrated mainly within (neuro) endocrine tissues. In this study we investigated the presence of FA1/dlk in other parts of the developing and ad

Dissociation of cholinergic supersensitivity from receptor number in ciliary muscle.

Ciliary ganglionectomy in the cynomolgus monkey produced loss of the accommodative response to electrical stimulation of the Edinger-Westphal nucleus and to topical eserine, concurrent with enhanced responsiveness to topical and systemic pilocarpine. This supersensitivity produced by parasympathetic denervation was not associated with an increase in muscarinic receptor number or affinity measured using specific QNB binding sites in ciliary muscle homogenates. In seven of ten cases, ciliary muscle muscarinic receptors were decreased by 60-84%, while in the remaining three cases, the decrease ra

Early Dorsal Midbrain Syndrome Mimicking an Adie's Tonic Pupil.

BACKGROUND: While tonic pupils have been attributed to various diseases, including syphilis, herpes zoster, orbital trauma, temporal arteritis, endometriosis, and paraneoplastic syndromes, obstructive hydrocephalus has not been implicated. CASE REPORT: A 36-year-old woman visited a neurology department with a 7-day history of throbbing headache and blurred vision in both eyes. She had early dorsal midbrain syndrome mimicking an Adie's tonic pupil, and cholinergic supersensitivity was demonstrated using topical 0.125% pilocarpine. Brain MRI revealed obstructive hydrocephalus at the level of th

Parasympathetic mediated pupillary dilation elicited by lingual nerve stimulation in cats.

PURPOSE: To determine the autonomic efferent nerve pathways for the reflex pupillary dilation elicited by somatic stimulation in cats. METHODS: Cats anesthetized with a mixture of alpha-chloralose (50 mg/kg) and urethane (100 mg/kg) were intubated and paralyzed by intravenous injection of pancuronium bromide. The central cut end of the lingual nerve (LN) was stimulated electrically to simulate somatic stimulation, and 1 microL of lidocaine (2%) was microinjected into the Vsp or the EW nucleus to determine its effect on the pupillary dilation induced by LN stimulation. The effect of electrical

Cocaine and amphetamine regulated transcript peptide (CART) in the tadpole brain: Response to different energy states.

Cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript peptide (CART) is an anorexigenic neuropeptide known to play a key role in energy homeostasis across the vertebrate phyla. In the current study, we have investigated the response of the CART immunoreactive system to varying energy states in the brain of a tadpole model. The pro-metamorphic tadpoles of Euphlyctis cyanophlyctis were fasted, or intracranially injected with glucose or 2-deoxy-d-glucose (2DG; an antagonist to glucose inducing glucoprivation) and the response of the CART containing system in various neuroanatomical areas was studied usin

Nuclear organisation of some immunohistochemically identifiable neural systems in five species of insectivore-Crocidura cyanea, Crocidura olivieri, Sylvisorex ollula, Paraechinus aethiopicus and Atelerix frontalis.

The organization of the cholinergic, catecholaminergic, and serotonergic neurons in the brains of five species of insectivores and the orexinergic (hypocretinergic) system in four insectivore species is presented. We aimed to investigate the nuclear complement of these neural systems in comparison to those of other mammalian species. Brains of insectivores were coronally sectioned and immunohistochemically stained with antibodies against choline acetyltransferase, tyrosine hydroxylase, serotonin and orexin-A. The majority of nuclei were similar among the species investigated and to mammals in

Use of a tissue clearing technique combined with retrograde trans-synaptic viral tracing to evaluate changes in mouse retinorecipient brain regions following optic nerve crush.

Successful establishment of reconnection between retinal ganglion cells and retinorecipient regions in the brain is critical to optic nerve regeneration. However, morphological assessments of retinorecipient regions are limited by the opacity of brain tissue. In this study, we used an innovative tissue cleaning technique combined with retrograde trans-synaptic viral tracing to observe changes in retinorecipient regions connected to retinal ganglion cells in mice after optic nerve injury. Specifically, we performed light-sheet imaging of whole brain tissue after a clearing process. We found tha

Parameters of transplant-mediated pupilloconstriction in rats with unilateral olivary pretectal lesions.

Embryonic retina, transplanted to the midbrain of neonatal rats, innervates the host brain and mediates a pupilloconstrictor response in the host eye. We hypothesise that there is a dynamic interaction between normal host and transplant photic input to the pupilloconstrictor centres. This study aims to characterise the nature of these interactions and determine the impact of experimental lesions on this reflex system. Pupillary diameter in normal rats is regulated by integration of intensity levels of the light delivered to the two eyes. The integration occurs at the primary input nucleus, the

Immunoreactivity and distribution of Fos in the mouse brain following diverse general anesthetics.

General anesthesia induces a range of effects, including unconsciousness, analgesia, amnesia, and immobility. Despite its widespread use for over a century, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This study aims to investigate whether different intravenous anesthetics share common neuronal targets. Propofol (180 mg/kg), midazolam (75 mg/kg), and esketamine (250 mg/kg) were intraperitoneally injected in C57BL/6J mice, respectively. After one hour of anesthesia, mice were transcardially perfused, and their brains were examined for Fos protein localization to assess changes in
