Graduate medical education funding and hospital quality: A longitudinal analysis of 881 teaching hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Graduate medical education funding ($21 billion, fiscal year 2023) consists of direct graduate medical education and indirect medical education payments for resident training and infrastructure costs. Whether this funding impacts hospital quality remains unclear. We hypothesized that increased indirect medical education and direct graduate medical education funding per resident would be associated with improved hospital quality. METHODS: We analyzed 881 teaching hospitals from 2018 to 2023 using Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Hospital Compare and Graham Center database

Driver education and graduated licensing in North America: past, present, and future.

PROBLEM: A stated objective of driver education in North America is to produce safer drivers, typically defined as drivers less likely to crash. This paper examines the extent to which driver education has achieved this objective independently as well as the extent to which such programs can support the success of graduated licensing in reducing young driver crashes. In so doing, it discusses past experiences, recent developments, and the future direction of driver education and training in relation to graduated driver licensing. METHOD: Literature review and synthesis. RESULTS: Driver educa

COVID-19: Impact on Orthopaedic Graduate Medical Education in the U.S.: AOA Critical Issues Symposium.

The COVID-19 crisis has challenged the U.S. health-care system in a variety of ways, including how we teach and train orthopaedic surgery residents and fellows. During the spring of 2020, the cessation of all elective surgical procedures and the diminished number of outpatient visits challenged graduate medical education. While residency programs in less affected areas may not have had to make many dramatic adjustments, some of those located in pandemic hotspots had to redirect trainees from orthopaedic rotations to COVID-19 units. No matter the region, the time that trainees have spent in rot
