Community Pharmacy Opioid Risk Screening Assessments: Comparing older adults (65+) to those under 65.

Background Older adults are at increased risk for opioid-related harm due to decreased drug metabolism and elimination, polypharmacy, and comorbid conditions. The ONE (Opioid and Naloxone Education) Program is a pharmacy-based opioid risk mitigation initiative that employs evidence-based patient screening to identify risk of opioid-use-disorder (OUD) and opioid overdose (OD). Based on screening results, pharmacists provide patient-specific education and interventions. Objective To compare the risk of OUD, OD, and the opioid harm reduction interventions provided to adults aged 65 and older to t

The importance of the pharmacist's expanding role on the diabetes team: reinforcing nutritional guidelines for improved glycemic control.

The role of the pharmacist on the diabetes care team is expanding due to the increasing number of patients diagnosed with diabetes, limited health care dollars, and the education related to and required for patients by managed care organizations and insurance companies. In the past, training of patients in diabetes self-management skills has been inadequate, and this continues to be the case. Clinical pharmacists, in cooperation with physicians, have increased opportunities to provide education about medications and may include instructions for patients regarding the interaction of food consum

Preprofessional curriculum in preparation for doctor of pharmacy educational programs.

The preprofessional pharmacy curriculum provides the foundation for the professional curriculum. Basic requirements are noted in the ACPE Standards and Guidelines, but there is considerable variation in the preprofessional curriculum requirements for entry into doctor of pharmacy programs in the United States. Changes in higher education, pharmacy practice, and health care continue to drive the need to evaluate the preprofessional curriculum. The objectives of this white paper were to create model preprofessional curricula that would enable students to be successful during and after entry into

Pharmacist-managed service providing penicillin allergy skin tests.

PURPOSE: A penicillin allergy skin-testing service run by pharmacists is described. SUMMARY: A board-certified allergist trained pharmacists at a tertiary care teaching hospital to administer penicillin allergy skin tests and interpret the results. A major objective of the service was to avoid unnecessary use of vancomycin and quinolones in patients claiming but not actually having a penicillin allergy. Patients with a severe type I reaction to penicillin during the preceding five years, patients with a confirmed history of a type II-IV reaction to penicillin, and severely immunosuppressed pa

The role of policy in community pharmacies' response to injection-drug use: results of a nationwide Canadian survey.

The response rate to this survey reflects the salience of the topic and the professional concern about and interest in issues presented by HIV. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has presented pharmacists with one of the greatest challenges to their professional training, ethics, and practice. It further expedites a current re-examination that is occurring among community pharmacies concerning their roles in community health practices. In response to HIV there have been dramatic and unprecedented changes in pharmacy policy and practices. Clearly, some community pharmacies have led the way and influenced po

Impact of a rural dual-credit high school and college pharmacy technician program with an associate degree pathway on a community hospital and region.

PURPOSE: Pharmacy technicians play an expanding role in clinical support and operational services, yet workforce instability and inconsistent training standards continue to challenge the profession. A highly trained and stable pharmacy technician workforce is essential to achieving the American Society of Health-system Pharmacists (ASHP) Practice Advancement Initiative (PAI) 2030's vision of comprehensive medication management in pharmacy practice.
