Public and professional aspects of the use of education in the control and prevention of cancer.

Studies of educational programs designed to encourage (i) regular systematic breast self-examination and (ii) participation in cervical screening programs demonstrate the necessity for precision in defining and evaluating cancer education aims and methods. Preteaching and postteaching and one-year follow-up data from both studies compare the immediate and longer-term effects of teaching on opinions and knowledge and relate these to behavior.

'Still standing, quietly decaying': How professional legitimacy in medical education creates trainee harm.

INTRODUCTION: For nearly a century, medical education has operated in a self-proclaimed state of crisis. Contemporary issues heavily focus on the escalating rates of trainee burnout, moral distress and attrition. However, despite persistent attempts at curricular reform and individualised wellness initiatives, the continued presence of physical and mental harm suggests that these superficial interventions are failing to address the root causes of systemic distress. METHODS: Drawing on the critical work of cultural theorist Jack Halberstam, this article makes a departure from the traditional a

Dental Students Versus Dentists' Professional Pain and Coping Strategies: Does Dental Education Matter?

OBJECTIVES: Dentists are at risk of developing musculoskeletal pain (MP) during their professional lives. The objectives were to compare dental students' and dentists' professional pain-related education, current professional pain, coping strategies, and evaluations of ways to alleviate pain. Relationships between pain education, pain, coping strategies, and evaluations of ways to alleviate pain were also explored. METHODS: Four hundred thirty-three first- to fourth-year dental students and 133 members of the American Dental Association responded to an anonymous survey. RESULTS: Students res

Professional Issues in the Interpreted Education of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students.

Through in-depth interviews, this qualitative study explored the perceptions of seven teachers of students who are d/Deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) regarding inclusive and interpreted education. The findings revealed central themes of concern including inadequate support in inclusive placements, communication modality mismatches, and insufficient quality of interpreted education. The teachers' experiences underscore the need for more comprehensive educational support systems and the development of robust support mechanisms to effectively navigate the challenges of inclusive placements for stu

Integration of ultrasonography training into undergraduate medical education: catch up with professional needs.

OBJECTIVE: Ultrasonography (US) has become the first-line imaging modality even for physicians who are not imaging specialists. The progress has not yet been sufficiently considered in medical education. The aim was to develop a curriculum that integrates US as a compulsory part into medical education directly from the start, to build up professional competencies toward residency. METHODS: Development was based on Kern's six-step approach to identify problems, specify needs, define goals, outline strategies, and propose methods. RESULTS: The proposed curriculum follows a spiral course within

Partnering with parents in interprofessional leadership graduate education to promote family-professional partnerships.

Evidence supports the benefits to families of relationships with professionals that build on the concept of partnership, but there are few studies in the literature of strategies involving joint education for parents and professionals to enhance the capacity of parents of children with special healthcare needs to be effective interprofessional partners. Since 2007, parents of children with special healthcare needs have participated alongside graduate students from five different profession-based training programmes in a structured interprofessional leadership programme. The aims of this summat

[Career paths and professional education in the former German Democratic Republic 1949-1989].

With the unification of Germany the career structure and the places where nurses were educated and trained were pushed aside, as legislation of the Federal Republic was adopted. Thus they have acquired historical interest. Nevertheless they represent a quasi governmental experiment, the outcome of which should be recognised as a historical experience and should be preserved scientifically, because of the impact on the development of nursing-education, professionalization of nursing and most of all on the preparation of nurse-teachers. The authors of this paper are former nurses and educators i

Innovative Violence Prevention Education for Health Professionals: Project ECHO.

OBJECTIVE: In 2024 the Surgeon General declared firearm violence a public health crisis. Suicide by firearm continues to rise despite much public health outreach. Fortunately, health professionals are uniquely positioned to educate their patients on violence prevention and firearm safety. METHODS: The Violence Prevention (VP) ECHO team developed a curriculum based on the most common etiologies: substance use, domestic and intimate partner violence, poor mental health, and social and environmental determinants of health. Thirty-six virtual sessions divided into 5 Series were developed between

Education and training for health professionals on disability inclusion: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Persons with disabilities continue to experience profound and avoidable health inequities. Health professionals play a key role in addressing these inequities yet often lack the competencies and preparedness to provide equitable and rights-based care. To advance disability inclusion within health professions education, clarity is needed on which themes are currently represented in existing education and trainings. The objectives of this scoping review are 1) to describe how disability-related content has been incorporated into education and training for health professionals, and 2)

Professional virtue of civility and the responsibilities of medical educators and academic leaders.

Incivility among physicians, between physicians and learners, and between physicians and nurses or other healthcare professionals has become commonplace. If allowed to continue unchecked by academic leaders and medical educators, incivility can cause personal psychological injury and seriously damage organisational culture. As such, incivility is a potent threat to professionalism. This paper uniquely draws on the history of professional ethics in medicine to provide a historically based, philosophical account of the professional virtue of civility. We use a two-step method of ethical reasonin

Effects of Ebola Virus Disease education on student health professionals.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is a severe, often fatal illness. Studies have shown that healthcare professionals lack an in-depth knowledge of EVD. Countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa are beginning to emphasize the need to train healthcare professionals about EVD, but the United States still lacks formal training for healthcare students. There is little research about the effectiveness of EVD training to support this study. The purpose of this study was to examine the knowledge-base and attitudes of healthcare students concerning EVD. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY AND SETTING: Tw

Flourishing under constraint: character education and virtue ethics as the foundation of professionalism in medical education and clinical practice.

Contemporary biomedical ethics has been shaped largely by principle-based and outcome-oriented frameworks, yet these approaches insufficiently account for the role of character in clinical judgement and professional formation on which their fruitful use depends. This paper develops a systems-aware virtue-ethical framework for medical education in which professionalism is understood as a sustained mode of professional agency arising from the coordinated exercise of cultivated moral and epistemic character, clinical competence, and practical wisdom within institutional conditions. Drawing on neo

Professional educators' experiences teaching internationally educated nurses attending bridging programs: a qualitative interview study.

BACKGROUND: To aid in the recertification and integration process of internationally educated nurses (IENs), many countries have organized bridging programs to provide support and education and align their knowledge and competence with local requirements. The importance and relevance of these programs for IENs are highlighted in related research. However, the experiences of university teachers, supervisors in clinical placement, and administrators organizing these programs are scarcely explored. The aim of this article is to explore the experiences of professional educators engaged in bridging

Improving developmental and educational support for children born preterm: evaluation of an e-learning resource for education professionals.

OBJECTIVES: Children born preterm are at higher risk for special educational needs and poor academic attainment compared with term-born peers, yet education professionals receive limited training and have poor knowledge of preterm birth. We have developed an interactive e-learning resource and evaluated its efficacy in improving teachers' knowledge of preterm birth and their confidence in supporting the learning of children born preterm. SETTING: Eight primary, infant or junior schools in England. PARTICIPANTS: 61 teachers of children aged 4-11 years, of which 55 (90%) were female. INTERVEN

The Caring Professionals Program: educational approaches that integrate caring attitudes and empathic behaviors into health professions education.

Caring attitudes and empathic behaviors are considered by most Americans to be an essential and intrinsic element of appropriate health care, yet little attention is given to this in the curricula of most healthcare professional training programs. This paper describes an ongoing educational intervention to develop healthcare professionals with caring attitudes and empathic behaviors that will be sustained in their professional practice environments. The Caring Professionals Program was designed to enhance and redesign existing learning experiences in four academic programs: physical therapy, o

Beyond the scalpel: humanistic training and professional identity formation in postgraduate plastic surgery education.

OBJECTIVE: Postgraduate plastic surgery education has traditionally emphasized anatomical knowledge, operative technique, aesthetic judgment, and procedural competence. However, plastic surgery practice is also shaped by aesthetic expectations, body image concerns, psychosocial vulnerability, medico-legal risk, and commercialized doctor-patient relationships. These tensions suggest that technical training alone is insufficient for preparing trainees to manage the humanistic challenges of contemporary plastic surgery. This study aimed to develop a Professional Identity Formation (PIF)-based hum
