Special education use in elementary school by children with nonsyndromic orofacial clefts.

BACKGROUND: Children with nonsyndromic orofacial clefts (NS OFCs) may require exceptional children's (EC) services for academic delays. We examined EC service use of children with and without NS OFCs in NC in elementary school. METHODS: We included 559 children with NS OFCs and 6,822 children without birth defects who had NC educational records. We estimated prevalence ratios, trends in enrollment, and characteristics of eligibility classification using descriptive statistics and logistic regression by cleft subtype and race/ethnicity. We estimated the odds of third grade retention by EC enro

Inclusive education and related policies in special needs schools in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Post-apartheid, the education system shifted its focus from a segregated education system to an inclusive education system, which resulted in greater consideration of the role and function of special needs schools. In 2014 the National Department of Basic Education developed and implemented an inclusive approach and policies to provide guidelines on the running of special needs schools (SNS). The study was conducted in six SNS in Ekurhuleni South District, South Africa. OBJECTIVES: The study explored the experiences of teachers and healthcare workers when implementing policies in

Navigating School-Based Special Education Services: A Self-Paced Virtual Learning Module.

INTRODUCTION: Children with disabilities are particularly vulnerable to school failure, as they are more likely than their peers to experience school dropout and academic struggles. Early identification of learning difficulties and access to special education services are critical to the success of children with disabilities. However, few pediatricians feel competent in screening for risks of school failure and/or assisting families with navigating the special education system. Due to restricted duty hours and limited scheduled didactic time during residency, flexible training options are need

Substance use by adolescents in special education and residential youth care institutions.

This study examined substance use rates and related background factors among adolescents in special education (SE) and in residential youth care institutions (RYC). Information on substance use from 531 adolescents in RYC, 603 adolescents in SE for students with behavioral problems (SEB) and 1,905 adolescents in SE for students with learning disabilities (SEL) was compared with information from 7,041 adolescents who attended mainstream education. Results show that substance use rates are particularly high among adolescents in RYC and in SEB. For example, 22% of the 12-13 years old in RYC and 1

Mathematics education and students with learning disabilities: introduction to the special series.

The prevalence of students with mathematics learning disabilities has triggered an interest among special education researchers and practitioners in developing an understanding of the needs of this group of students, and in identifying effective instructional programming to foster their mathematical performance during the school years and into adulthood. Research into the characteristics of students with mathematics learning disabilities is being approached from different perspectives, including developmental, neurological and neuropsychological, and educational. This diversity helps us develo

The uses of (mis)information in education policy: introduction to the special issue.

This special issue of Evidence & Policy focuses on growing concerns around misinformation, disinformation and research misuse in education policy. This introduction to the issue shows how education policy is a unique and particularly vulnerable information ecosystem because it is deeply contested, highly politicized, often structurally decentralized and susceptible to intermediaries who frame problems, package evidence and influence policy discourse. Drawing on scholarship across multiple fields - including misinformation studies, policy studies and education research - our introduction highli

Behavioural phenotypes and special educational needs: is aetiology important in the classroom?

BACKGROUND: A number of genetic conditions with associated intellectual disability and/or special educational needs have increasingly well-defined behavioural phenotypes. Thus, the concept of 'behavioural phenotype' and aetiology of intellectual disability may be important with regard to school-based interventions. METHOD: The evidence for distinctive cognitive and behavioural aspects of five of the most common genetic syndromes (Down syndrome, fragile X syndrome, Williams syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome and velo-cardio-facial syndrome) associated with special educational needs is reviewed wi

Coping strategies and the impact of challenging behaviors on special educators' burnout.

Although challenging behaviors have been identified as a source of staff stress, few researchers have directly addressed this relationship. In the present study, 55 teachers and support staff in special schools for children with mental retardation completed questionnaires assessing burnout, coping strategies for challenging behavior, and their exposure to challenging behavior. Results showed that (a) use of maladaptive coping strategies for challenging behaviors constitutes a risk for staff burnout, (b) this risk is in addition to that associated with exposure to challenging behavior, and (c)

Awareness and knowledge of fragile X syndrome among special educators.

A questionnaire to assess awareness and knowledge of various syndromes was mailed to a random sample of elementary special education teachers in Colorado. Approximately half of the questionnaires were completed and returned. Results indicate that significantly more respondents had knowledge of Down syndrome than of fetal alcohol or fragile X syndromes. Respondents' level of education, date of most recent degree, and years of experience were not associated with greater awareness nor knowledge of fragile X syndrome. Respondents expressed interest in a broad array of fragile X in-service training

The Longitudinal Measurement of Reasoning Abilities in Students With Special Educational Needs.

Students with special educational needs in the area of learning (SEN-L) have learning disabilities that can lead to academic difficulties in regular schools. In Germany, these students are frequently enrolled in special schools providing specific training and support for these students. Because of their cognitive difficulties, it is unclear whether standard achievement tests that are typically administered in educational large-scale assessments (LSA) are suitable of students with SEN-L. The present study evaluated the psychometric properties of a short instrument for the assessment of reasonin

Special educators' intentions towards supporting practice of inclusive education for students with disabilities in secondary schools in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Although teacher training institutions have introduced courses in inclusive education to equip teachers with the necessary pedagogical skills to teach in diverse classrooms, it has been argued that the services of special educators are essential when it comes to teaching students with disabilities in regular classrooms. Unfortunately, there is scant literature on the views of special educators regarding the enactment of inclusive education in sub-Saharan African countries, such as Ghana. OBJECTIVE: In an effort towards promoting inclusive education in Ghana, there has been deploym
