The interplay of socio-economic status represented by paternal educational level, white matter structure and reading.

A child's school achievement is influenced by environmental factors. The environmental factors, when represented by socio-economic status (SES) of the family, have been demonstrated to be related to the reading skills of a child. The neural correlates of the relation between SES and reading have been less thoroughly investigated. The present study expands current research by exploring the relation between SES, quantified by paternal educational level, reading of the offspring and the structure of white matter pathways in the left hemisphere as derived from DTI-based tractography analyses. The impact of educational status on the clinical features of major depressive disorder among Chinese women.

BACKGROUND: Years of education are inversely related to the prevalence of major depressive disorder (MDD), but the relationship between the clinical features of MDD and educational status is poorly understood. We investigated this in 1970 Chinese women with recurrent MDD identified in a clinical setting. METHODS: Clinical and demographic features were obtained from 1970 Han Chinese women with DSM-IV major depression between 30 and 60 years of age across China. Analysis of linear, logistic and multiple logistic regression models were used to determine the association between educational level

[Educational status of the Czech population about Lyme borreliosis and experience with tick bites--pilot study].

The incidence of Lyme borreliosis (LB) has a rising trend since 1995. In 1995 6,302 cases were reported, in 1996 4,192 (EPIDAT, SZU). The objective of the present work was to assess in a selected population sample knowledge of ticks and their relationship to Lyme borreliosis. The investigation was based on a survey using questionnaires. 110 respondents were selected according to the following pattern: 19 secondary school students, 32 blood donors, 44 visitors of parks, 15 countryside people. 99.1% of the subjects knew about the existence of ticks in the Czech Republic, 10.9% of the respondents

Limited formal education is strongly associated with lower cognitive status, functional disability and frailty status in older adults.

UNLABELLED: Limited formal education is still common in ageing populations. Although limited formal education seems to be independently and negatively associated with cognition, functional abilities and frailty in ageing, no studies have examined whether the gradient of limited formal education has an impact on health in later life. OBJECTIVE: to examine the relationship of limited formal education with cognitive status, functional abilities, and frailty status. METHODS: a cross-sectional study was conducted involving 540 older adults stratified into groups: no formal education, 12-24 months

SimSmoke simulation models by educational status: past and future US trends and the potential role of policy.

INTRODUCTION: Simulation models are helpful in anticipating future trends and developing effective tobacco control policies to reduce smoking-related inequities. However, few models have systematically analysed smoking trends by education group. METHODS: We developed four separate SimSmoke models by educational group: less than high school, high school, some college and college and above. Education status is based on the US Census estimates, and smoking prevalence is based on the Current Population Survey-Tobacco Use Supplement (CPS-TUS). Following a first-order Markov process, smoking preval

The significant role of educational status in PKU patients: the beneficial effect of psychological support in depression.

INTRODUCTION: Classical Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a metabolic disease characterized by high phenylalanine (phe) levels in blood and brain. PKU patients are commonly treated with low phe diet supplemented with amino acid free formula. High Phe levels minimize brain tryptophan concentration, the pressure of serotonin, which is responsible for the appearance of depression symptoms. Both amino acids share the same pathway for entering CNS via BBB. Aimed to determine the effect of psychological support on different education status depressed PKU patients via adherence to their diet. METHODS: PKU pa

Modeling the effects of health status and the educational infrastructure on the cognitive development of Tanzanian schoolchildren.

This paper models the proximate determinants of school attendance and scores on cognitive and educational achievement tests and on school examinations of over 600 schoolchildren from the Control group of a randomized trial in Tanzania, where children in the Intervention group heavily infected with hookworm and schistosomiasis received treatment. The modeling approach used a random effects framework and incorporated the inter-relationships between school attendance and performance on various tests, controlling for children's health status, socioeconomic variables, grade level, and the education

The Children's Orientation and Amnesia Test: educational status is a moderator variable in tracking recovery from TBI.

The Children's Orientation and Amnesia Test (COAT) is an objective, standardized means of assessing cognitive functioning in children and adolescents who are in the early stages of recovery from traumatic brain injury. The COAT is composed of 16 items that assess general orientation, temporal orientation, and memory. This study was designed to determine if children who are receiving special education services perform more poorly on the COAT than children who are in the regular classroom. It was found that children receiving special services performed significantly more poorly, and 13% of them

Problematizing Perceptions of STEM Potential: Differences by Cognitive Disability Status in High School and Postsecondary Educational Outcomes.

The STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) potential of youth with cognitive disabilities is often dismissed through problematic perceptions of STEM ability as natural and of youth with cognitive disabilities as unable. National data on more than 15,000 adolescents from the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 first suggest that, among youth with disabilities, youth with medicated attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have the highest levels of STEM achievement, and youth with learning or intellectual disabilities typically have the lowest. Undergraduates with med

Maternal iodine status in a multi-ethnic UK birth cohort: Associations with child cognitive and educational development.

BACKGROUND: Maternal iodine requirements increase during pregnancy to supply thyroid hormones critical for fetal neurodevelopment. Iodine insufficiency may result in poorer cognitive or child educational outcomes but current evidence is sparse and inconsistent. OBJECTIVES: To quantify the association between maternal iodine status and child educational outcomes. METHODS: Urinary iodine concentrations (UIC) and iodine/creatinine ratios (I:Cr) were measured in 6971 mothers at 26-28 weeks' gestation participating in the Born in Bradford cohort. Maternal iodine status was examined in relation to

Health and educational achievement of school-aged children: The impact of anaemia and iron status on learning.

BACKGROUND: Anaemia is a common blood disorder in children and is known to cause complications such as lethargy and stress on bodily organs. Children from disadvantaged communities often fail to achieve their age-related potential with iron deficiency anaemia stated as a risk factor through causing inattentiveness and learning problems. Limited evidence exists for the adverse effects of iron deficiency anaemia on the developing child's brain from South African studies. AIM: The objective of this study was to determine the local prevalence of anaemia and iron deficiency and to examine their as

The educational, vocational, and marital status of growth hormone-deficient adults treated with growth hormone during childhood.

The goal of growth hormone therapy in childhood is to increase stature, thereby facilitating normal psychosocial development. To determine the social outcome of patients with growth hormone deficiency (GHD), we interviewed 116 adults with GHD across Canada, including 86 men and 30 women 18 to 38 years of age who were treated with growth hormone during childhood. The education of the 96 patients who had completed their formal education was similar to their siblings and to the general population. Of the patients in the labor force, 35.4% were unemployed; the unemployment rates for those patients
