Serum immunoglobulin E concentrations and radioallergosorbent tests in children with atopic dermatitis.

Serum IgE concentrations and the presence of allergen-specific IgE were determined in a series of 23 children with atopic dermatitis. In this group 83% had significantly elevated serum levels of IgE, 91% had coexistent respiratory allergy, 70% had radioallergosorbent test (RAST) evidence of pollen hypersensitivity, and 43% gave a history and demonstrated a RAST score consistent with milk or egg hypersensitivity. In patients with eczema a significant proportion of the elevated serum IgE appears to be antigen specific.

[Egg allergy].

Egg is one of the most important allergen in childhood feeding. The pathogenic mechanism in egg allergy is immediate, type I, IgE-mediated hypersensitivity, although other mechanisms are possible. The aim of this review is to point out that diagnosis of egg protein allergy is mainly clinical and double-blind placebo-controlled food challenge is nowadays the gold standard. Although reference values for prick test and sIgE have been proposed, which can foretell symptoms in groups of egg sensitive children, these values are not so accurate for a single diagnosis, since they mainly refer to childr

In vitro granuloma modulation induced by immune complexes in human Schistosomiasis mansoni.

Immune complexes (IC) were isolated from sera of six chronic schistosomiasis patients in order to study the regulatory mechanisms of granulomatous hypersensitivity to Schistosoma mansoni egg antigens in vitro. Purified blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from patients (N = 14) with active schistosome infection when treated with a pool of isolated IC were able to inhibit granulomatous hypersensitivity as determined in an in vitro model of granuloma formation. The suppressive effect of IC on granuloma index varied from 33% to 73%. Analysis of the in vitro proliferation of PBMC from individuals infect

British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology guidelines for the management of egg allergy.

This guideline advises on the management of patients with egg allergy. Most commonly, egg allergy presents in infancy, with a prevalence of approximately 2% in children and 0.1% in adults. A clear clinical history and the detection of egg white-specific IgE (by skin prick test or serum assay) will confirm the diagnosis in most cases. Egg avoidance advice is the cornerstone of management. Egg allergy often resolves and re-introduction can be achieved at home if reactions have been mild and there is no asthma. Patients with a history of severe reactions or asthma should have reintroduction guide

Food immediate-contact hypersensitivity (FICH) and elimination diet in young children with atopic dermatitis. Preliminary results in 107 children.

In atopic dermatitis [AD], not only food consumption, but direct skin-contact too can provoke hypersensitivity reactions. We imitated food immediate-contact hypersensitivity [FICH] to cow's milk, egg, peanut or soy by a skin provocation test. This skin application food test [SAFT] was applied in 91 patients aged up to 5 years and suffering from AD, and in 16 healthy controls (all SAFT-negative). In the SAFT-positive patients (n = 61), FICH to egg was observed in 72%, to cow's milk in 47%, to peanut in 34% and soy in only 1 patient. SAFT and RAST scores correlated weakly. Nevertheless, many dis

Oral Immunotherapy With Egg and Milk: Changes in Peripheral Serum Cytokines Are Not Predictive Factors for Severe Adverse Reactions or for the Final Report.

BACKGROUND: Oral immunotherapy (OIT) is a new approach in patients with food allergy. Various immunological mechanisms underlie the reversal of food allergy. In this paper, we study possible changes in peripheral cytokine patterns during OIT. METHODS: Determinations of cytokines in peripheral blood were made in children who had milk or egg allergy and who received OIT. The determinations were made before and after OIT, and again following a final repeat oral challenge a month after a diet excluding the culprit food. RESULTS: No significant changes were registered in the cytokines studied (IL

Anaphylactic reaction to probiotics. Cow's milk and hen's egg allergens in probiotic compounds.

BACKGROUND: Probiotics are used in the treatment of allergic diseases. We investigated the safety of probiotics for subjects with food allergy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Labels of probiotics commercially available in Spain were examined to assess their content of cow's milk or hen's egg. Skin prick tests with these compounds (20 mg/ml) were performed in five children allergic to cow's milk, five children allergic to hen's white egg, and five control subjects non-allergic to food. Three serum pools: I (positive-specific IgE to cow's milk and hen's egg white proteins), II (positive-specific IgE to

Parasitological, hematologic, and immunologic responses in acute and chronic infections of dogs with Ancylostoma ceylanicum: a model of human hookworm infection.

A model of human hookworm infection has been defined with a strain of Ancylostoma ceylanicum that is known to be infective for humans. In the first experiment, dogs were infected with between 150 and 12,150 filariform larvae and followed up for six weeks. A direct relation was found between the size of infecting dose, fecal egg excretion, intestinal adult worm burden, and worm distribution in the bowel. Dogs with heavy infection developed bloody diarrhea and iron-deficient anemia. In the second experiment, dogs infected with 2,000 larvae excreted ova until autopsy 36 weeks after infection. Nor

Comparative Safety of Baked Egg, Egg Yolk, and Egg White in Young Children with Egg Allergy.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Baked egg (BE) is generally well tolerated by children with egg allergy, and heated egg yolk (EY) is considered less allergenic than egg white (EW). Although these findings suggest that both BE and EY may be safer options for reintroduction, no studies have directly compared their safety with each other or with heated EW. This study aimed to compare the safety of oral food challenge (OFC) for reintroducing BE, EY, and EW in children with egg allergy. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data from patients who underwent OFCs with BE, EY, or EW at the Department of

Inhalant allergy to egg yolk and egg white proteins.

BACKGROUND: Several egg white and egg yolk and avian proteins have been described as a cause of inhalant allergy. Sometimes inhalational type I hypersensitivity to these proteins is associated with food allergy to egg. OBJECTIVE: We studied two patients who experienced respiratory and food allergic symptoms upon exposure to egg or avian antigens through the inhalative or digestive routes. Clinical and immunological studies were carried out in order to identify individual allergens from these sources that could be responsible for crossreactivity reactions. RESULTS: Patient 1 showed IgE sensit

Measles immunization in children with a history of egg allergy.

This study investigated the use of measles vaccine in children with a history of egg protein hypersensitivity, referred between 1987 and 1993 to a specialist immunization facility. Two hundred children were seen of whom 199 were immunized without any adverse effect; one child had an anaphylactic reaction. The proportion experiencing an anaphylactic reaction was 0.5% (95% CI 0.01-2.75%). It is believed that a history of egg protein allergy should no longer be regarded as a contra-indication to vaccination. Skin testing prior to measles immunization should, however, continue.

Induction of protective immunity and modulation of granulomatous hypersensitivity in mice using PIII, an anionic fraction of Schistosoma mansoni adult worm.

This study was performed in order to define Schistosoma mansoni antigens that are able to function as modulator agents in the granulomatous hypersensitivity to parasite eggs in BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice. A fraction of S. mansoni, designated PIII, derived from adult worm antigen preparation (SWAP) was obtained using anion-exchange chromatography on an FPLC system. Immunization of mice with PIII in the presence of Corynebacterium parvum and Al(OH)3 as adjuvant induced an immune response in this animals as determined by ELISA and spleen cell proliferation assays against S. mansoni antigens SEA, SWA

[Food allergens in children].

Food hypersensitivity is increasing, with clinical indications and allergens multiplying and evolving. We report our experience with clinical indications and distribution of allergens in children with food hypersensitivity. Data were established in a prospective study at medical centres in Nancy and Toulouse (France). We studied 378 children with food hypersensitivity indicated by food challenge, which account for 74.2% of food hypersensitivity. Clinical features were: atopic dermatitis (46.5%), urticaria (17.9%), oedema (14.2%), asthma (8.4%), anaphylaxis (5.2%), gastro-intestinal symptoms (2

Allergy to egg yolk possibly induced by sensitization to bird serum antigens.

Hypersensitivity to ingested hen's egg yolk is described in a 65-year-old female patient. The patient's symptoms started in adult life and coincided with the acquisition of a parrot as a household pet. The bird's presence caused complaints of allergic rhinitis, while the ingestion of eggs caused urticaria and angioedema. Analysis of sequential blood serum samples revealed high levels of IgE antibodies to egg yolk and to various bird sera, but no precipitins. RAST-inhibition experiments indicated that the primary sensitization may have been to antigens from the parrot.

The role of basophil activation test and component-resolved diagnostics in the workup of egg allergy in children at low risk for severe allergic reactions: A real-life study.

BACKGROUND: The gold standard for diagnosing egg allergy in children is the oral food challenge (OFC). However, OFCs are time-consuming and risky procedures. Our study aimed to evaluate the utility of the basophil activation test (BAT) and component-resolved diagnostic in the diagnostic workup of children with egg allergy. METHODS: Overall, 86 children aged 6 months to 17 years, suspected of egg allergy, underwent OFC with boiled egg according to international standardized protocols. BAT and specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) testing to component egg proteins (Gal d 1-4) were also performed. R

[Bird-egg syndrome in children].

Allergy to egg is highly frequent in childhood. In general, children allergic to egg react principally to the ingestion of egg white. Egg yolk contains various proteins but the major allergens are contained in egg white. The principal allergens are ovalbumin, ovomucoid, ovotransferrin, and lysozyme. These proteins have been sequenced. In some cases, a relationship between type I hypersensitivity with respiratory symptoms due to bird antigens and allergy to egg yolk has been described. This association is known as bird-egg syndrome, which is caused by sensitization to chicken serum albumin (alp

Baked milk- and egg-containing diet in the management of milk and egg allergy.

Cow's milk (CM) and hen's egg allergies are among the most common food allergies in children. With evidence of increasing food allergy prevalence and more persistent disease, it has become vital to improve the management of CM and egg allergies. The ability to tolerate baked milk or egg, such as in a cake or muffin, has been associated with an increased chance of tolerance development. Studies report that about 70% of CM- and egg-allergic children can tolerate baked milk or egg and that incorporating baked milk or egg into the diet is well tolerated. Being able to add baked milk or egg into th
