We present the case of a 44 year-old patient, without significant previous medical history, who presented a systemic infection due to Eikenella corrodens following a dental extraction in the context of an agranulocytosis of pharmacological origin due to carbimazole. During admission he was treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics and G-CSF 5 μg/kg/day, undergoing a favorable evolution and receiving hospital discharge on the seventh day. Invasive infections due to Eikenella corrodens that develop bacteriaemia are less than 20%, and are generally secondary to the drainage of previous abscesses an

STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the case of a patient who habitually chewed betel quid and presented with intractable lower back pain owing to L4-L5 discitis caused by Eikenella corrodens.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: E. corrodens is a normal inhabitant of mucosal surfaces in humans, particularly the oral cavity. Vertebral discitis due to E. corrodens is extremely rare. Discitis caused by E. corrodens in a habitual betel quid chewer has not been reported thus far.
METHODS: A 52-year-old man had suffered from lower back pain for many years, and it worsened 3 months before ad

An 18-year-old female barbary ape in a safari park died from a mixed bacterial infection. Staphylococus aureus was isolated from a purulent necrotic mastitis and from a chronic purulent granulomatous sialoadenitis of the sublingual glands, Eikenella corrodens from a botryomycosis-type pneumonia. As judged by histopathology, mixed infection of S. aureus and E. corrodens was present in the sialoadenitis, and E. corrodens botryomycosis-type bacterial colonies were also present in the pancreatic parenchyma, though here no bacteriological isolation was attempted. A generalized amyloidosis, and espe

The authors present a case of a 29-year-old woman who was diagnosed with pneumonia in the left side complicated with pleural effusion and hemorrhagic pericarditis one month after she had undergone tonsillectomy. Eikenella corrodens was identified as pathogenic agent when the empyema was removed during thoracotomy. After the patient was given antibiotic treatment she was discharged from the hospital without any symptoms or complaints. However, one month after she had left the hospital she was readmitted to the surgical unit as an emergency because of acute abdominal complaints. On admission aca

We determined the cellular fatty acid composition of reference strains and clinical isolates of each of the three Kingella species, Cardiobacterium hominis, and Eikenella corrodens by using capillary gas chromatography. Kingella denitrificans and Kingella kingae contained myristic (14:0) and palmitic (16:0) acids as major acids, whereas cis-vaccenic (18:1 omega 7c) and palmitic acids were the major acids in Kingella indologenes, C. hominis, and E. corrodens. C. hominis differed from the other four species by the absence of 3-hydroxylauric (3-OH-12:0) acid, from K. indologenes by the presence o

UNLABELLED: Eikenella corrodens (EC) is a human commensal microorganism of the mouth flora. This bacterium is rarely reported in bone and joint infections in children, but the consequences on the joint function can be devastating and irreversible. We report the case of septic arthritis of the hip following an oral wound in a 12-year-old boy. The progression of the condition was favorable with no complications or pain observed after antibiotic treatment. Clinical and radiological examinations showed a satisfactory outcome at 6 months with no sign of recurrence or complication (growth disorder).

Eikenella corrodens and Veillonella parvula are normal cultivable inhabitants of the oral cavity but their presence in endodontic infections has not been as common as it could be anticipated. This might have been because of shortcomings of culture techniques when it comes to bacterial isolation or identification. The present study intended to survey samples from primary endodontic infections for the presence of E. corrodens and V. parvula using a culture-independent 16S rRNA gene-based nested PCR protocol. Genomic DNA was isolated directly from samples taken from different forms of periradicul

Eikenella corrodens is a slow-growing, fastidious gram-negative bacillus that is often overlooked in routine diagnostic procedures. We report a case of a nine-year-old girl who developed a surgical site infection five days after debridement and suturing for craniofacial trauma. Gram staining of purulent material found gram-negative coccobacilli. The isolate was presumptively identified as Eikenella spp. by conventional culture and biochemical testing, and later confirmed as E. corrodens by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Based on the literature, am

BACKGROUND: The HACEK group comprises Haemophilus spp., Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Cardiobacterium hominis, Eikenella corrodens, and Kingella kingae, are Gram-negative bacteria that are slow-growing and fastidious. These organisms are common causes of culture-negative endocarditis. However, brain abscesses caused by Haemophilus aphrophilus and E. corrodens have been rarely reported. The case we describe, which was promptly identified and successfully treated, will be meaningful for the diagnosis and treatment of such infectious diseases.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we report a case

Vertebral osteomyelitis is an uncommon variant of osteomyelitis. Although Staphylococcus and/or Streptococcus are commonly associated, alternate pathogens have been implicated in vertebral osteomyelitis, especially in endemic areas and/or immunocompromised patients. Here, we present a case of a young African American female with type I diabetes mellitus who presented to us with worsening back pain. The MRI lumbar spine was suggestive of vertebral osteomyelitis involving the right facet joint of the fifth lumbar (L5) and the first spinal (S1) joint and a significant narrowing of the thecal sac

Eikenella corrodens is a gram-negative, facultative anaerobic rod that frequently exists as part of normal human flora in the upper respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract. Recently, E. corrodens is reported as a rare causative agent of empyematic lesion. We report a case of 10-year-old girl with acute subdural abscess. She developed a high grade fever, swelling of the left periorbital area, right sided partial seizure and hemiplegia. Brain CT and MRI showed left parietal subdural abscess. Because intravenous antibiotic therapy was not effective enough and her neurological symptoms progre

Information on intraoral distribution of putative periodontal pathogens might be essential for controlling different forms of periodontal disease. Colonization may be either promoted or impeded by other bacteria competing in the subgingival ecosystem. In recent investigations microbial associations between dental organisms have been determined in a multitude of subgingival plaque samples within multiple patients and described by odds ratios, in most circumstances without taking into account the correlated structure of the observations within a single individual. The present investigation had 3

Inflammatory pseudotumors are a rare pathology and scarcely reported in the literature and have been associated with polymicrobial infections. Here, we present the case of a 9 years old boy from Bolivia, who presented with abdominal pain, weight loss and vomiting, who was diagnosed with a thoraco-abdominal pseudotumor. The micro-biology and molecular laboratories in tissue allowed the identification of one of the probable etiological agents.

Over the past 25 years, Eikenella corrodens has increasingly been recognized for its pathogenic potential. Previously identified as an organism most likely to cause opportunistic infection in the immunocompromised host, Eikenella more recently has been implicated in a number of clinical infections in non-immunocompromised patients. We report a case of community-acquired pneumonia, caused by Eikenella, in a patient with diabetes mellitus and a past history of testicular cancer. A review of the literature was conducted in order to review other cases of pulmonary infection with Eikenella, in immu

A 69-year old man with clinically silent mitral valve prolapse developed infective endocarditis secondary to Eikenella corrodens after dental work. The patient required surgical removal of abscessed teeth and long-term antibiotic therapy. E. corrodens is a gram-negative coccobacillus which normally inhabits the oropharynx, gastrointestinal tract, and upper respiratory tract. The organism can cause cutaneous and abdominal abscesses, meningitis, osteomyelitis, and endocarditis. Patients with mitral valve prolapse and a pre-existent systolic murmur or Doppler echocardiographic evidence of mitral

Eikenella corrodens is a commensal bacterium of the buccal cavity and rarely causes lower respiratory infections in healthy children. Two young patients with persistent pleuropneumonia caused by E. corrodens are presented. In both cases, an obstructing endobronchial foreign body was found. Removal of the foreign bodies allowed complete recovery. A local and literature review demonstrated E. corrodens causing empyema in only four other cases, all with comorbidities. We conclude that in cases of persistent pneumonia in healthy children due to Eikenella corrodens, an aspirated foreign body should
