This study aimed to evaluate the presence, identify Eimeria species, and epidemiological aspects associated with the infection in goat herds in northern Paraná, Brazil. A total of 384 fecal samples were collected from goats of different breeds, ages, and sexes from eight farms. An epidemiological questionnaire about rearing system (semi-intensive or intensive), age of the animals (up to 6 months or over 6 months), and type of floor in the pen (dirt or slatted) was used to evaluate the epidemiological aspects associated with Eimeria spp. infection. The McMaster technique was used to count Eimer

Avian coccidiosis is a widespread and economically significant poultry disease caused by several Eimeria species, including Eimeria tenella. Previously, E. tenella serine/threonine protein phosphatase (EtSTP) was found to be differentially expressed in drug-sensitive (DS) and drug-resistant strains using RNA-seq. In the present study, we found that transcription and translation levels of EtSTP were higher in diclazuril-resistant (DZR) strains and maduramicin-resistant (MRR) strains than in DS strains using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and Western blotting. Enzyme activity results indicate

BACKGROUND: The phylum Apicomplexa comprises a wide variety of parasites of significant medical and economic relevance. These parasites have extremely different host and tissue tropisms; for example Toxoplasma gondii can invade virtually any nucleated cell and infect almost all warm-blooded vertebrates, whereas Eimeria tenella infects only chickens and is restricted in its growth to epithelial cells of the caecum. Proteins released from the microneme secretory organelles (MICs) are critical for apicomplexan invasion of host cells and allow parasites to bind a diverse range of host cell oligosa

Although cellular immune reactions seem to be crucial for protective immune responses in Eimeria spp. infections, there are also evidences on an active involvement of the humoral counterpart. In the present study, we have analyzed the humoral response of goat kids subjected to primary and challenge infections with Eimeria ninakholyakimovae. Specific levels of IgG and IgM in serum samples and IgA in the ileal mucus were estimated. In infected kids, significantly increased levels of IgG were observed from 3 weeks post infection onwards in addition to an enhancement of specific IgM and secretory

In the poultry industry, Eimeria spp. is one of the important pathogens which cause significant economic losses. We have previously generated a chicken monoclonal antibody (mAb), 6D-12-G10, with specificity for an antigen located in the apical cytoskeleton of Eimeria acervulina and with cross-reactive among Apicomplexan parasites, including other Eimeria spp., Toxoplasma, Neospora, and Cryptosporidium spp. Furthermore, the protein of Cryptosporidium parvum recognized by the 6D-12-G10 has been identified as elongation factor-1α (EF-1α). In the present study, to identify the target molecule of E

Both interleukin-17A (IL-17A) and IL-17F are proinflammatory cytokines that have an important role in intestinal homeostasis via receptor signaling. These cytokines have been characterized in chickens, but very little is known about their receptors and their functional activity. We provide here the first description of the sequence analysis, bioactivity, and comparative expression analysis of chicken IL-17RA (chIL-17RA) in chickens infected with Salmonella and Eimeria, two major infectious agents of gastrointestinal diseases of poultry of economic importance. A full-length chIL-17RA cDNA with

BACKGROUND: Chicken coccidiosis is a protozoan disease that leads to considerable economic losses in the poultry industry. Live oocyst vaccination is currently the most effective measure for the prevention of coccidiosis. However, it provides limited protection with several drawbacks, such as poor immunological protection and potential reversion to virulence. Therefore, the development of effective and safe vaccines against chicken coccidiosis is still urgently needed.
METHODS: In this study, a novel oral vaccine against Eimeria tenella was developed by constructing a recombinant Lactobacillu

There are no known coccidian parasites reported from the marbled polecat (Vormela peregusna; IUCN Vulnerable), a mustelid found in southeastern Europe and western Asia. There are eleven Eimeria species documented in other mustelids. This study reports a complete mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) from Eimeria species found in marbled polecat. Intestinal samples from seven nature-killed or road-killed individuals (collected 2020-2023 in Xinjiang, China) were subjected to genomic DNA extraction. cox1 nested PCR screening revealed Eimeria infection in 3/7 hosts. Full mitochondrial genome amplification

Coccidiosis is caused by apicomplexan parasites of the genus Eimeria, which infect epithelial cells of the intestinal tract causing diarrhea and negatively impacting production in the poultry industry. The self-limiting and highly immunogenic nature of infection by Eimeria spp. make live vaccination an effective means of coccidiosis control. Paramount to vaccine efficacy is the ability to administer precise numbers of viable oocysts. Unfortunately, no rapid and accurate method for determination of oocyst viability is available presently. This study presents the development of a qPCR-based assa

Coccidia of the genus Eimeria are specialized intracellular parasitic protozoa that cause severe coccidiosis when they infect their hosts. Animals infected with Eimeria develop clinical symptoms, such as anorexia, diarrhea, and hematochezia, which can even cause death. Although the current preferred regimen for the treatment of coccidiosis is antibiotics, this treatment strategy is limited by the ban on antibiotics and the growing problem of drug resistance. Therefore, the exploration of alternative methods for controlling coccidiosis has attracted much attention. Lactobacillus plantarum has b

Coccidian parasites possess complex life cycles involving asexual proliferation followed by sexual development leading to the production of oocysts. Coccidian oocysts are persistent stages which are secreted by the feces and transmitted from host to host guaranteeing life cycle progression and disease transmission. The robust bilayered oocyst wall is formed from the contents of two organelles, the wall-forming bodies type I and II (WFBI, WFBII), located exclusively in the macrogametocyte. Eimeria nieschulzi has been used as a model parasite to study and follow gametocyte and oocyst development

Eimeria tenella can cause the disease coccidiosis in chickens. The direct and often detrimental impact of this parasite on chicken health, welfare, and productivity is well recognized; however, less is known about the secondary effects that infection may have on other gut pathogens. Campylobacter jejuni is the leading cause of human bacterial foodborne disease in many countries and has been demonstrated to exert negative effects on poultry welfare and production in some broiler lines. Previous studies have shown that concurrent Eimeria infection can influence the colonization and replication o

Bats are potential reservoirs of Cryptosporidium and Eimeria. The genus Cryptosporidium infects various vertebrates and causes a diarrheal disease known as cryptosporidiosis. Many epidemiological studies in wild animals have been performed; however, most of them relied on only PCR-based detection because of the difficulty of performing pathological analyses. Accordingly, the natural host and pathogenicity of Cryptosporidium bat genotypes remain unclear. In this study, we captured Eptesicus nilssonii (Northern bats) in Hokkaido, Japan. Of the three intestinal samples obtained, two were positive

Avian coccidiosis is a disease caused by the intestinal protozoa Eimeria. The site of invasion and lesions in the intestine is species-specific, for example E. acervulina affects the duodenum, E. maxima the jejunum, and E. tenella the ceca. Lesions in the intestinal mucosa cause reduced feed efficiency and body weight gain. The growth reduction may be due to changes in expression of digestive enzymes and nutrient transporters in the intestine. The objective of this study was to compare the expression of digestive enzymes, nutrient transporters and an antimicrobial peptide in broilers challenge

Recently, we have demonstrated the utility of Eimeria krijgsmanni as a novel mouse eimerian parasite for elucidating the biological diversity. The parasite showed notable infectivity to mice with various levels of immune status and susceptibility to antimicrobial agents including coccidiostat. However, the detailed lifecycle of E. krijgsmanni had not yet been determined and this information was lacking in discussion of previous findings. In the present study, we clarified the morphological characteristics of E. krijgsmanni and its lifecycle in normal mice, and examined the effects in immunodef

None of anticoccidial vaccines (Trivalent TAM™, monovalent Neca™ and imported pentavalent Paracox(®)-5) contain Eimeria brunetti in Japan, which has not been regarded as a cause of coccidiosis, because of its low prevalence. However, we have recently reported the evidence of a high nationwide prevalence of this species. In this report, we describe the characteristics of E. brunetti which have never been clearly defined in Japan. Mortality rates and other disease characteristics caused by our strain (Nb strain) were similar to those reported previously in other studies. Despite great reduction

The site specificity that avian Eimeria sporozoites and, to a more limited degree, other apicomplexan parasites exhibit for invasion in vivo suggests that specific interactions between the sporozoites and the target host cells may mediate the invasion process. Although sporozoite motility and structural and secreted antigens appear to provide the mechanisms for propelling the sporozoite into the host cell, there is a growing body of evidence that the host cell provides characteristics by which the sporozoites recognise and interact with the host cell as a prelude to invasion. Molecules on the s

To provide more information on the mechanisms involved in the immune inhibition of eimeria infections, NIH mice were adoptively immunized against infection with Eimeria vermiformis by the transfer of mesenteric lymph node cells from primed animals and homologously challenged. Subsequent changes in the architecture and cellular composition of the intestine were compared with those observed in similarly challenged susceptible control mice and correlated with the development of the parasite in the two groups. Actively immunized mice were also examined. In adoptively immunized mice, the developmen
