Previously, we characterized an undocumented strain of Eimeria krijgsmanni by morphological and biological features. Here, we present a detailed molecular phylogenetic analysis of this organism. Namely, 18S ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA) sequences of E. krijgsmanni were analyzed to incorporate this species into a comprehensive Eimeria phylogeny. As a result, partial 18S rDNA sequence from E. krijgsmanni was successfully determined, and two different types, Type A and Type B, that differed by 1 base pair were identified. E. krijgsmanni was originally isolated from a single oocyst, and thus the resul

BACKGROUND: The genus Choleoeimeria was established in 1989 to accommodate tetrasporocystic, dizoic coccidians characterized by ellipsoidal oocysts with a shape index exceeding 1.4 that specifically parasitize the biliary epithelium of various reptilian hosts. The current study provides the first record of Choleoeimeria sp. (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from the gall bladder and intestinal contents of Burton's carpet viper, Echis pyramidum (Reptilia: Viperidae), collected from the Bahariya Oases in the Western Desert of Egypt. METHOD: Ten specimens of the viper Echis pyramidum were collected from t

Coprological examination of 40 Apodemus mystacinus Danford and Alston 1877 from Jordan revealed oocysts of three species of genus Eimeria. Two species are described as new. Eimeria zuhairamri sp. n. has broadly ellipsoidal oocysts 29.6 (27.0-34.0) x 23.3 (22.0-25.0) mum with distinctly granulated wall and oocyst residuum. Endogenous development occurs in jejunum and ileum. Eimeria alorani sp. n. has oocysts 26.9 (23.0-29.0) x 19.3 (18.0-22.0) mum with smooth wall and absent residuum. Endogenous development is confined to the caecum. The third species, developing in jejunum, has oocysts morphol

Coprological analysis of a sample from one free-living hedgehog was done with the use of a direct flotation method with additional incubation of fecal material. The study revealed three types of eggs and oocysts in the feces. The most commonly diagnosed were oocysts of Isospora rastegaievae (543/3g), while oocysts of Monocystis sp. (267/3g) and eggs of Aonchotheca/Eucoleus spp. (52/3g) were seen less often. This is the first report of coccidia I. rastegaievae (Apicomplexa: Eimeriida) and acephaline gregarine Monocystis sp. (Apicomplexa: Eugregarinida) infection in a hedgehog in Poland.

BACKGROUND: Eimeria coccidiosis is a significant intestinal parasitic disease, which can lead to weight loss, disease and even death of many animals. At present, there is no information about the prevalence of Eimeria among the world's endangered species of Père David's deer (Elaphurus davidianus). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify an unknown Eimeria genus in the Père David's deer in Dafeng Milu National Nature Reserve, China.
RESULTS: A new Eimeria species is described from Père David's deer. Sporulated oocysts (n = 54) are pyriform, with a rough, yellowish brown, 2-layered

Infection by Caryospora cheloniae has been reported to be responsible for green turtle strandings with high morbidity and mortality rates worldwide. Although studies have already shown the pathogenesis of these infections, many aspects of this protozoan are still poorly understood, including their life cycle and infection dynamics in free-living sea turtle populations. Due to the lack of information about the infection by this protozoan in sea turtles in Northeastern Brazil, our study aims to describe Caryospora sp. infection and its pathological findings in free-living Chelonia mydas found on

The testudine intranuclear coccidium (TINC) is an emerging, globally significant apicomplexan pathogen responsible for severe multisystemic disease in captive chelonians. In this study, samples were obtained from deceased captive Sri Lankan star tortoise (Geochelone elegans) in Taiwan and leopard tortoises (Stigmochelys pardalis) in Japan for comprehensive pathological and molecular analysis. Histopathological examination of three cases confirmed systemic infection characterized by intranuclear inclusions within epithelial cells of multiple organs, with lesions ranging from widespread coagulat

It is generally accepted that parasites exert negative effects on their hosts and that natural selection favors specific host responses that mitigate this impact. It is also known that some components of the host immune system often co-evolve with parasite antigens resulting in a host-parasite arms race. In addition to immunological components of the anti-parasitic response, host behavioral responses are also important in this arms race and natural selection may favor avoidance strategies that preclude contact with parasites, or shifts in the host's thermoregulatory strategy to combat active i

Molecular and morphological data permit a rational subdivision of the paraphyletic Isospora into 2 apparently monophyletic groups of parasites, i.e., Isospora and Cystoisospora. Atoxoplasma was determined to be a junior objective synonym for Isospora. Tetrasporozoic, diplosporocystic oocysts possessing Stieda bodies in their sporocysts belong to Isospora (Eimeriidae) and have been described principally from the feces of birds. Tetrasporozoic, diplosporocystic oocysts without Stieda bodies in their sporocysts belong to Cystoisospora (Sarcocystidae).

The diversity and host specificity of gastrointestinal parasites infecting free-ranging sloths is poorly known. We compared gastrointestinal parasites of two sloth species from Costa Rica-three-fingered sloths (Bradypus variegatus) and two-fingered sloths (Choloepus hoffmanni)-for the first time in both a primary forest and an urban habitat. We asked whether host-parasite interactions were predominantly structured by host identity, the habitats in which hosts occurred, or both. Coproparasitology revealed protozoa and nematode eggs from both host species, but cestode eggs were recorded only in

To fill the knowledge gap on the biology of the fish coccidian Goussia janae, RNA extracted from exogenously sporulated oocysts was sequenced. Analysis by Trinity and Trinotate pipelines showed that 84.6% of assembled transcripts share the highest similarity with Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum. Phylogenetic and interpretive analyses from RNA-seq data provide novel insight into the metabolic capabilities, composition of the invasive machinery and the phylogenetic relationships of this parasite of cold-blooded vertebrates with other coccidians. This allows re-evaluation of the phylogenet

Tyzzeria Allen, 1936 is a coccidian genus traditionally associated with Anseriformes, although there are descriptions of Tyzzeria spp. from junglefowls, snakes, skinks and mice. In this sense, the current study performs a taxonomic review of Tyzzeria spp., evaluating those that should be valid, invalid or that require further studies for validation. Along with this review, oocysts morphologically identified as Tyzzeria parvula (Kotlán, 1933) Klimeš, 1963 were recovered from fecal samples of swan geese Anser cygnoid (Linnaeus, 1758) in the mountainous region of the State of Rio de Janeiro, whic

Reptiles have increased in popularity worldwide; snakes and lizards are frequently used as pets. As a consequence of their popularity, the interest of the scientific community in these animals has increased. In order to acquire epidemiological data on the parasitic infections affecting reptiles in Italy a survey was carried out in 125 snakes and 25 lizards bred in the Campania region of southern Italy. Individual fecal samples were collected and FLOTAC was used for copromicroscopic diagnosis. Eimeriidae, oxyurids, strongylids, other gastro-intestinal nematodes and pulmonary nematodes were the

Sixteen nutria (Myocastor coypus) from a protected area in Curitiba, Brazil, were sampled to determine the prevalence of Fasciola hepatica eggs and intestinal parasites and the presence of snails in the habitat used by nutria. The overall prevalence rates were 56.25% (9) for F. hepatica eggs, 87.50% (14) for cestode eggs, 56.25% (9) for ascarid eggs, 50% (8) for coccidian (Eimeriidae) oocysts, and 56.25% (9) for Strongyloidea eggs. Fasciola hepatica eggs had an average size of 138 microm x 72 microm. The following mollusks were found: Physa cubensis, Physa marmorata, and Biomphalaria tenagophy

The taxonomic status of the extraintestinal piscine coccidium Calyptospora funduli is based in part on its requirement of an intermediate host (the daggerblade grass shrimp Palaemonetes pugio). In the present study, grass shrimp fed livers of Gulf killifish (Fundulus grandis) infected with sporulated oocysts of C. funduli exhibited numerous sporozoites suspended in the intestinal contents when fresh squash preparations were examined by light microscopy. Using this method, sporozoites were not seen in intestinal epithelial cells of the grass shrimp or in any other cell types. Ultrastructural ex

During a survey of the coccidian parasites of reptiles, caryosporan oocysts wee found in the faeces of wild and captive European viperid snakes Vipera berus (L.) and V. ammodytes (L.). Thirty two of 37 examined V. berus (86%) and 9 of 17 examined V. ammodytes (53%) specimens were found to be passing caryosporan oocysts. Morphological characters of all caryosporan isolates were identical and fitted well with the description of Caryospora simplex Léger, 1904. Experimental inoculation of severe combined immunodeficient (SCID) mice with seven isolates of C. simplex from V. berus or V. ammodytes co

An adult female rabbit was submitted for necropsy after sudden death. Pneumonia and nephritis were diagnosed by gross examination. On histological examination. Besnoitia cysts were seen in the pulmonary interalveolar tissue. The Besnoitia cysts were morphologically normal in appearance, measured 127 to 185 microns in diameter and provoked mild mononuclear inflammatory reaction. To the best of our knowledge there has been no previous report of natural besnoitiosis in rabbits.

The genus Goussia Labbé 1896 represents a polyphyletic assemblage of piscine coccidia whose systematics remain poorly resolved due to morphological convergence and limited genomic data. Here we describe Goussia sairae n. sp. from the liver of Pacific saury (Cololabis saira) in the Northwestern Pacific, characterized through integrated morphological, histopathological, and molecular analyses. Long-read amplicon sequencing of single-oocyst isolates enabled the first complete mitochondrial genome assembly for a marine Goussia species, revealing two co-existing mitogenome genotypes (99.3% identity
