ELASTIC FIBERS DEFINE EMBRYONIC TISSUE STIFFNESS TO ENABLE BUCKLING MORPHOGENESIS OF THE SMALL INTESTINE.

During embryonic development, tissues must possess precise material properties to ensure that cell-generated forces give rise to the stereotyped morphologies of developing organs. However, the question of how material properties are established and regulated during development remains understudied. Here, we aim to address these broader questions through the study of intestinal looping, a process by which the initially straight intestinal tube buckles into loops, permitting ordered packing within the body cavity. Looping results from elongation of the tube against the constraint of an attached

[Ocular changes associated with connective tissue disorders: role of the elastic and collagen components].

Every day, the emerging fields of genomics and proteomics provide new information about both normal and pathological processes, among which, the extracellular matrix appears to play a significant role. Over the past decade, the classic fibrillar components of the matrix, collagen and elastin, have been the subject of extensive research leading to a wealth of information which is far form being fully interpreted. Although the basic composition and structure of the matrix components has been well established, today more than twenty five different varieties of collagen have been described, and el

Tissue damage force estimation in porcine small intestine from its elasticity.

PURPOSE: Post-surgical complications are correlated to the surgeon's technical skill level. Thus, efforts are being put in finding ways to improve the surgeon's technical skills, such as not causing unwanted damage to tissues during surgery. In this study, we aim to investigate the possibility of estimating biological tissue damage, in view of preventing unwanted damage during surgery. METHODS: A series of tensile tests were performed on porcine small intestinal tissue to determine the elasticity and the tearing force. The tissue was then microscopically observed to investigate the influence

Measurement of soft tissue elasticity in the congenital clubfoot using scanning acoustic microscope.

To compare the soft-tissue elasticity between the medial, lateral, and posterior aspects, the deltoid and calcaneofibular ligaments, and the medial, lateral, and posterior capsular tissues were collected from 27 feet of 16 congenital-clubfoot patients. The tissue sound speed, which closely correlates to the Young's modulus, was measured using a scanning acoustic microscope. Contrary to our expectations, lateral ligament showed a significantly higher sound speed than medial ligament (P=0.0023). Lateral capsule also showed a higher sound speed than the medial one (P=0.0338). The results of the s

Forward-scanning endoscopic optical coherence elastography for elasticity measurements of anisotropic tissues.

The elasticity of luminal tissues is closely associated with disease progression and functional status. Endoscopic optical coherence elastography (OCE) has emerged as a promising technique for assessing the mechanical properties of luminal tissues. However, previous endoscopic OCE approaches typically measure elasticity along only a single direction-either laterally or in depth-thereby potentially leading to an inaccurate estimation of anisotropic tissue mechanics. In this study, we propose a forward-scanning endoscopic OCE method that enables quantitative measurement of tissue elasticity in b

Assessment of the elasticity of lipedematous tissue and the examination of the relationship between pain and fibrosis in lipedema.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Lipedema is a chronic and progressive adipose tissue disorder characterized by the abnormal accumulation of subcutaneous fat, predominantly in the legs and occasionally in the arms. The symptom that most significantly affects the quality of life is pain. Ultrasound elastography is an imaging technology that allows for measuring tissue stiffness quantitatively. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between accompanying pain in patients with lipedema and tissue elasticity measured using shear-wave elastography (SWE). METHODS: Our study was designed as an observatio

Physics-Informed Neural Networks for Tissue Elasticity Reconstruction in Magnetic Resonance Elastography.

Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) is a medical imaging modality that non-invasively quantifies tissue stiffness (elasticity) and is commonly used for diagnosing liver fibrosis. Constructing an elasticity map of tissue requires solving an inverse problem involving a partial differential equation (PDE). Current numerical techniques to solve the inverse problem are noise-sensitive and require explicit specification of physical relationships. In this work, we apply physics-informed neural networks to solve the inverse problem of tissue elasticity reconstruction. Our method does not rely on num

Nonlinear elastic material property estimation of lower extremity residual limb tissues.

The interface stresses between the residual limb and prosthetic socket have been studied to investigate prosthetic fit. Finite-element models of the residual limb-prosthetic socket interface facilitate investigation of the mechanical interface and may serve as a potential tool for future prosthetic socket design. However, the success of such residual limb models to date has been limited, in large part due to inadequate material formulations used to approximate the mechanical behavior of residual limb soft tissues. Nonlinear finite-element analysis was used to simulate force-displacement data o

The effect of elastic deformation and rigid displacement soft tissue artefact on glenohumeral axial rotation.

Measurement of axial rotation of the humerus using marker-based motion capture is compromised due to soft tissue artefact. The aim of this study was to quantify the elastic deformation of markers on the humerus and evaluate the combined effects of elastic deformation and rigid displacement of the markers on humeral kinematics during axial rotation. Thirteen wheelchair users performed active humeral internal rotation whilst a Vicon motion capture system tracked 12 retro-reflective markers placed on the arm. Elastic deformation was quantified using the Optimal Common Shape Technique (OCST) and O

Collagen-elastic tissue changes and vascular involvement in granuloma annulare: a review of 35 cases.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of granuloma annulare (GA) is unclear. Collagen fiber degeneration is commonly reported, and there are several conflicting studies on elastic fiber and vascular changes associated with GA. In this study, we aimed to evaluate histopathologic characteristics, collagen and elastic tissue changes and vascular changes in GA. METHODS: Clinical records of 35 GA patients were examined alongside serial sections of 38 biopsy specimens from these patients. New sections of biopsy tissue were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, Verhoeff-van Gieson or Alcian blue and then evalu

Vertebral trabecular bone microscopic tissue elastic modulus and hardness do not change in ovariectomized rats.

Ovariectomized rats have been used extensively and have received substantial acceptance as animal models for postmenopausal osteoporosis. However, little is known about the microscopic tissue properties of rat vertebral bone, especially during osteoporosis caused by estrogen depletion. This study applied a new nanoindentation technique to quantify the microscopic mechanical properties of vertebral trabecular bone tissue in ovariectomized rats. Seventeen-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats underwent an ovariectomy. After death at 37 weeks, the fraction of the trabecular bone area of the lumbar vertebr

Immunohistochemical studies on vitronectin in elastic tissue disorders, cutaneous amyloidosis, lichen ruber planus and porphyria.

Vitronectin, identical with serum-spreading factor and S-protein of complement, is a glycoprotein present in both plasma and tissue. It stimulates cell adhesion and spreading and affects the complement and coagulation pathways. Vitronectin immunoreactivity was recently found in conjunction with dermal and renal elastic fibres, in renal amyloid deposits in cases of AL- and AA-amyloidosis, and in sclerotic glomerular lesions. Skin specimens from lesions of patients with selected skin diseases were investigated with an avidin-biotin peroxidase technique using both monoclonal and polyclonal anti-v
