Lower back and elbow injuries in golf.

Golf injuries to the lower back and elbow are common problems in both the professional and amateur player, and any information regarding the successful treatment of these injuries has important implications for the medical practitioner. This paper presents the successful management and outcome of two case studies associated with low back pain and lateral epicondylitis in golf. Exercise therapy and conditioning has been shown to be an effective treatment modality for these two types of injury. In particular, a dynamic exercise programme which incorporates golf functional rehabilitation, is a mo

Pathophysiology of overload injuries around the elbow.

The most common elbow injuries appear to have a pathophysiology that is microtrauma based but with multifactorial origin. This pathophysiology is a process of gradual degeneration on a cellular and tissue level, with resulting alterations that predispose to more overt injury as the athlete responds to the inherent demands of the sport. This process is similar to injury patterns described at the foot, knee, and shoulder. Evaluation frameworks can be used to describe the clinical changes that are detectable, and to evaluate all of the various components that may play a role in the causes of thes

Ipsilateral elbow and forearm injuries in children.

Twenty-five children with combined elbow injury and forearm bone fractures have been reviewed. The incidence of serious complications was low, and only one patient was significantly handicapped. Open reduction and internal fixation of the supracondylar fracture with closed treatment of the forearm fracture gave the best results.

The complex injury of the elbow.

The complex injury is characterized by a fracture and/or dislocation of the elbow in association with a serial injury of the upper extremity, or a severe soft tissue trauma , or a prolonged ischemia caused by vascular injury or compartment syndrom. They are defined as complex injuries because their treatment differs from that of a simple fracture implying that standardized concepts usually cannot be employed. The results of primary treatement show a high rate of complications. They are accompanied by functional deficits including pseudarthrosis and ankylosis. As a consequence, ulnar neuropathy

Pediatric elbow injury.

The increasing involvement of children in sport and fitness related activity has been parallel by an increase in the frequency of sports-related childhood injury. Immature, open epiphyses, as well as soft articular cartilage predispose children to age-specific injury. An understanding of osseous development, normal radiologic variants, and the diagnosis and treatment of common elbow injuries in the pediatric population will assist the clinician who treats younger patients.

Shoulder, arm, and elbow injuries in soccer players.

Soccer is a global widespread sport with a high injury rate, mostly to the lower limbs. Even though upper limb injuries are much less common among soccer players, their prevalence has increased in recent years. This is due to several reasons/factors, including new and more aggressive tactics, a rise in the number of younger players with different levels of skeletal maturation, and due to the growth of women's participation in sports, which is in line with the fast progression in the degree of professionalism in women's soccer. This review paper aims to (a) describe the most common injuries in

Imaging of sports ligamentous injuries of the elbow.

Ligamentous injuries of the elbow are common in sports. The diagnosis is usually based on a combination of the assessment of the mechanism of injury during the sporting activity and physical examination. Imaging with radiographs and MR imaging has an important diagnostic role, particularly when the clinical presentation is unclear and to evaluate for other important potential associated injuries such as myotendinous injuries, fractures, dislocations, and osteochondral lesions. Treatment includes conservative and surgical measures depending on the severity of the instability and associated inju

Radiocapitellar cartilage injuries associated with tennis elbow syndrome.

PURPOSE: A recent anatomical study has suggested that considerable contact between the undersurface of the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) and the lateral edge of the capitellum is the cause of tendon injury in lateral epicondylosis. We hypothesized that this contact might concurrently induce cartilage injuries of the capitellum. The purpose of the present study was to determine the prevalence, location, and severity of cartilage lesions of the radiocapitellar joint accompanying lateral epicondylosis and to identify their correlation with ECRB status. METHODS: Arthroscopic assessment of

Acute elbow injuries in the National Football League.

We performed a retrospective review to evaluate acute medial collateral ligament injuries of the elbow in professional football players from 1991 to 1996 (5 seasons). There were 5 acute medial collateral ligament injuries in 4 players (1 player with bilateral involvement). All injuries occurred with the hand planted on the playing surface while a valgus or hyperextension force was applied to the elbow. There were 2 centers, both involved with long-snapping situations, 1 running back, and 1 quarterback. All elbows had valgus instability on physical examination. Despite this instability, all pla

Elbow, forearm and wrist injuries in the athlete.

Competitive and recreational athletes sustain a wide variety of soft tissue, bone, ligament, tendon and nerve damage to their upper extremities. Most such injuries are related to direct trauma or repetitive stress, and account for a significant amount of 'down time' for athletes participating in a wide range of sports, particularly those in which the arm is utilised for throwing, catching or swinging. Overuse injuries to the elbow include musculotendinous injuries, ulnar nerve injuries and ligamentous injuries. Osteochondrol lesions of the capitellum and posterior impingement injuries in the j

MR imaging of tendon injuries in the elbow.

Tendon injuries are among the more common sources of elbow pain, resulting from occupational and sports activities as well as the activities of daily living. The exquisite soft-tissue contrast resolution and multiplanar capability of MR imaging have proven ideal for evaluating, diagnosing, and managing tendon injuries. Familiarity with normal anatomy, the spectrum of tendon derangement from tendinosis to complete tears, and the typical injury mechanisms involved in tendinopathy about the elbow are all invaluable for appropriate MR imaging examination and interpretation.

Elbow Traumatic and Overuse Injuries: A Radiologic Review.

Elbow injuries resulting from acute trauma or repetitive overuse are a common source of pain and functional limitation in both athletes and the general population. This review presents a radiologic approach to the evaluation and management of these conditions. It describes the roles of key imaging modalities and provides practical guidance for assessing traumatic injuries such as fractures, ligamentous disruptions, and tendon avulsions. Common overuse conditions, such as medial epicondylitis, lateral epicondylitis, and nerve compression syndromes, are reviewed with attention to characteristic

Rehabilitation and Return to Sport Following Elbow Injuries.

Elbow injuries are frequently seen in throwing and overhead athletes. This review provides a framework for diagnosis, treatment, and particularly rehabilitation of common elbow pathologies, including ulnar collateral ligament injury, valgus extension overload, and medial and lateral epicondylitis. Advanced rehabilitation facilitates complete return to functional sport-specific activity and is based on objective criteria. As diagnostic and therapeutic modalities improve our understanding of elbow pathologies in the athletic patient, continued research will further elucidate objective evidence-b

Sports Injuries of the Hand, Wrist, and Elbow.

Sports injuries of the upper extremity are a common problem seen by those who care for athletes and those who manage upper extremity injuries. The term "high-level athlete" may include adolescents and high school students, collegiate athletes, and of course, the professional athlete. However, the "weekend warrior" can sustain similar injuries and can have a similar desire to return to play as quickly as possible. The challenge in management of these injuries to the elbow, wrist, and hand is identifying those injuries that will benefit from early surgery compared with those that may be safely t
