Little is known about conditions associated with favorable elder mistreatment (EM) case outcomes. The fundamental goal of EM protective service programs is to alleviate risk associated with substantiated cases of elder abuse and neglect. Using the EM socio-cultural model, this study examined victim, perpetrator, victim-perpetrator relationship, social embeddedness, and socio-cultural factors predicting risk alleviation of EM cases. Data from a random sample of EM protective social service cases (n = 250) at a large community agency in New York City were collected and coded by multiple, indepen

Twenty-one district nurses (DNs) narrated 44 cases of elder abuse within families. A phenomenological-hermeneutical analysis revealed that the experiences were complex and often included families providing care for an elderly person. The abuse seemed to be related to the inability of one party to meet the care demands required by the elderly, by him- or herself, or by the situation. It also seemed to be related to an inhibiting dependency between the parties, a negative execution of power over the weaker party, and a history of violence. When the experiences were considered within the perspect

This study examines factors which contribute to elderly abuse and neglect by caregivers in a domestic setting. Methodological and conceptual variations and problems in previous studies have led to considerable confusion as to the determinants of this important social problem. A more rigorous research design was used in this study than has been previously employed. Fifty-nine abused elders from a model project site for the study of elderly abuse were compared with forty-nine non-abused clients from a home care program in the same agency. Using a research instrument designed by the authors, data

This study unveils the true scale of the issue, urging immediate action to protect the aging population.
METHODS: We searched multiple databases, including Medline, Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, International Scientific Indexing, Global Health, Global Index Medicus, Embase, and Google Scholar in De

The objective of this study was to survey general practitioners (GPs) in Ireland regarding their experience with elder abuse. A random sample of 800 GPs were mailed a survey in March 2010, with a reminder in May 2010, yielding a 24% response rate. The majority, 64.5%, had encountered elder abuse, with 35.5% encountering a case in the previous year. Most were detected during a home visit. Psychological abuse and self-neglect were most common. Most GPs in Ireland have encountered cases of elder abuse, most were willing to get involved beyond medical treatment, and 76% cited a need for more educa

Elder abuse occurs most commonly in residential rather than institutional settings, and the most likely perpetrators are known by the victim. Although a defined set of risk factors has not been developed, careful questioning and assessment can help determine whether a patient is at increased risk. The common types of elder maltreatment include caregiver and self-neglect, emotional and psychological abuse, fiduciary exploitation, and physical abuse. Assessment consists of comprehensive physical examination, including scrutiny of the musculoskelatal and genitourinary systems, neurologic and cogn

As far as the authors know, their project is the only systematic effort to apply a psychosocial model to the prevention of elder abuse. They plan to disseminate the results of their project in the near future. Assuming positive results, they hope to encourage other practitioners and administrators to make such training available to caregivers.

The pace of aging in our population is dramatically increasing, raising concern for rising prevalence of elder abuse. Given the visual nature of the occupation, dermatologists can play a crucial role in identifying certain types of elder mistreatment, especially physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect. Nonetheless, many dermatologists report insufficient training in the diagnosis of elder abuse as well as appropriate interventions. This review article aims to synthesize and assess recent clinical, screening, and practical developments surrounding elder abuse. Implementation of some of these

PURPOSE: Elder abuse and neglect is one of the most important problems of social and health policy among countries around the world. Making a real and reliable assessment of the occurrence of abuse is difficult to implement. The aim of this work is to show the frequency of physical, psychological, sexual abuse and financial exploitation among older adults.
METHODS: Older adults, who were aged ≥ 60 years (N = 200) were qualified for the study. The studied population consisted of 112 women (56.0%) and 88 men (44.0%). The whole project procedure only included filling in the survey questionnaire.
