Reversible cardiac conduction block and defibrillation with high-frequency electric field.

Electrical impulse propagation is an essential function in cardiac, skeletal muscle, and nervous tissue. Abnormalities in cardiac impulse propagation underlie lethal reentrant arrhythmias, including ventricular fibrillation. Temporary propagation block throughout the ventricular myocardium could possibly terminate these arrhythmias. Electrical stimulation has been applied to nervous tissue to cause reversible conduction block, but has not been explored sufficiently in cardiac tissue. We show that reversible propagation block can be achieved in cardiac tissue by holding myocardial cells in a re

Bladder neck electrical conductivity in female urinary urgency and urge incontinence.

Thirty-nine consecutive women, referred because of lower urinary tract symptoms of stress incontinence, urgency and urge incontinence, were interviewed and their symptoms were graded using a standardized questionnaire. They were investigated with conventional, fast-fill cystometry and with a new bladder neck electrical conductivity (BNEC) test which measures bladder neck activity. A highly significant correlation between the symptoms of urgency and urge incontinence and the maximum amplitude of bladder neck activity was found with the new test. The correlation of the maximum deflection at rest

Influence of physiological and pharmacological factors on conducted electrical device safety thresholds.

Conducted electrical devices (CEDs) deliver brief, high-voltage pulses that depolarise peripheral motor nerves and produce transient neuromuscular incapacitation. Although these pulse characteristics generally remain well below myocardial stimulation thresholds, deaths temporally associated with CED exposure have raised concerns that physiological or pharmacological factors present during deployment may reduce the cardiac safety margin or precipitate fatal arrhythmias. This review examines the potential effects of sympathetic activation, metabolic acidosis, myocardial ischaemia, heart failure,

Annular Conductive Hydrogel-Mediated Wireless Electrical Stimulation for Augmenting Neurogenesis.

Electrical stimulation (ES) has a remarkable capacity to regulate neuronal differentiation and neurogenesis in the treatment of various neurological diseases. However, wired devices connected to the stimulating electrode and the mechanical mismatch between conventional rigid electrodes and soft tissues restrict their motion and cause possible infections, thereby limiting their clinical utility. An approach integrating the advantages of wireless techniques and soft hydrogels provides new insights into ES-induced nerve regeneration. Herein, a flexible and implantable wireless ES-responsive elect

Infiltration of Conduction Tissue Is a Major Cause of Electrical Instability in Cardiac Amyloidosis.

BACKGROUND: The pathology of conduction tissue (CT) and relative arrhythmias in living subjects with cardiac amyloid have never been reported. AIMS: To report CT pathology and its arrhythmic correlations in human cardiac amyloidosis. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 17 out of 45 cardiac amyloid patients, a left ventricular endomyocardial biopsy included conduction tissue sections. It was identified by Aschoff-Monckeberg histologic criteria and positive immunostaining for HCN4. The degree of conduction tissue infiltration was defined as mild when ≤30%, moderate when 30-70% and severe when >70% cell ar

Complete electrical reverse remodeling of native conduction after resynchronization therapies.

BACKGROUND: Electrical reverse remodeling of native conduction is associated with better clinical outcome following cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). We aimed to describe characteristics, time course and long-term outcome of patients with complete electrical reverse remodeling (CERR) after resynchronization therapies. METHODS: CRT candidates were treated with bi-ventricular, His bundle or left bundle branch pacing. CERR was defined if native QRS duration post-implantation was narrowed to ≤120 ms. RESULTS: A total of 322 patients met the inclusion criteria. Among them, 66 were super-re

Cardiac radiotherapy induces electrical conduction reprogramming in the absence of transmural fibrosis.

Cardiac radiotherapy (RT) may be effective in treating heart failure (HF) patients with refractory ventricular tachycardia (VT). The previously proposed mechanism of radiation-induced fibrosis does not explain the rapidity and magnitude with which VT reduction occurs clinically. Here, we demonstrate in hearts from RT patients that radiation does not achieve transmural fibrosis within the timeframe of VT reduction. Electrophysiologic assessment of irradiated murine hearts reveals a persistent supraphysiologic electrical phenotype, mediated by increases in NaV1.5 and Cx43. By sequencing and tran

Design of Alginate-Based Bionanocomposites with Electrical Conductivity for Active Food Packaging.

Bionanocomposite materials have been designed as a promising route to enhance biopolymer properties, especially for food packaging application. The present study reports the preparation of bionanocomposite films of alginate with different loadings of pure reduced graphene oxide (rGO) or of mixed zinc oxide-rGO (ZnO-rGO) fillers by solvent casting. Sepiolite is used to make compatible rGO with the hydrophilic matrix. The addition of fillers to alginate matrix maintains the low water solubility promoted by the calcium chloride treatment, and, additionally, they demonstrate a weaker mechanical pr

Electric-field-induced shifts in the infrared spectrum of conducting nerve axons.

Difference spectra between resting and excited nerve in the infrared region between 2000 and 1000 cm(-1) have been examined with a resolution of 0.5 cm(-1). Spectra were obtained with a modified Perkin-Elmer model 521 grating infrared spectrophotometer (Perkin-Elmer Corp., Instrument Div., Norwalk, Conn.), and the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio was improved by time averaging and digital smoothing. Peaks occurring in the regions around 1030 and 1066 cm(-1) are identified as P-O-C stretch, at 1410-1414 cm(-1) as C-H deformation, and at 1750 cm(-1) as carbonyl stretch. The difference peaks appear to

The masked threshold to noise ratio in brainstem electric response audiometry: assessment of the conductive loss component by bone-conducted masking.

The aim of this study was to assess the conductive loss component (CLC) by brainstem electric response audiometry. A bone-conducted noise was used to mask out the response to a conventional air-conducted click stimulus. The difference between the levels of the click and the noise is defined as the masked threshold to noise ratio (MTNR). This MTNR was determined for 21 normal ears (MTNR = -13 +/- 5 dB). The increase in MTNR compared to this normative value is a measure of the CLC. For 10 ears with an artificially induced purely conductive loss, the increase in MTNR is in good agreement with the

Self-organization of conducting pathways explains electrical wave propagation in cardiac tissues with high fraction of non-conducting cells.

Cardiac fibrosis occurs in many forms of heart disease and is considered to be one of the main arrhythmogenic factors. Regions with a high density of fibroblasts are likely to cause blocks of wave propagation that give rise to dangerous cardiac arrhythmias. Therefore, studies of the wave propagation through these regions are very important, yet the precise mechanisms leading to arrhythmia formation in fibrotic cardiac tissue remain poorly understood. Particularly, it is not clear how wave propagation is organized at the cellular level, as experiments show that the regions with a high percentag

Radiofrequency electrical conductivity reveals a distinct dimension of early human brain development.

Quantitative MRI has characterised early human brain development primarily through measures of water mobility, leaving other biophysical properties of maturing tissue unexplored. Here we show that radiofrequency electrical conductivity, reflecting ionic composition, membrane density and extracellular geometry in addition to water content, can be extracted retrospectively and at scale from the phase of conventional MRI acquisitions, revealing a distinct dimension of early brain tissue maturation and state. Applying electrical property tomography to 888 neonatal MRI sessions (784 subjects, 26-45

Over-Penetration Risk of TASER 10 Conducted Electrical Weapon Darts in Humans.

The TASER™ T10® (T10) is a new generation of conducted electrical weapon (CEW) introduced in 2023. T10 has significant new technology enhancements related to the deployed darts. These darts are thin-diameter, low-profile projectiles launched by primer-ignited black-powder instead of compressed nitrogen used in previous model launch platforms. They are also launched at higher muzzle velocity (62.5±9.1m/s or 205±30 feet/s) than previous CEW darts, to assist with enhanced target adherence. We retrospectively examined digital images of human tissue that had 40 T10 darts fired into it at measured v

Structural influence of knitting patterns on mechanical, electrical and durability characteristics of conductive fabrics.

This study investigates the influence of knitting structure on the electrical performance and durability of conductive fabrics for smart clothing applications. Fabrics with plain (PN), cable (CB), and miss (MS) stitches were knitted using cotton and silver-coated yarns, and subjected to ten cycles of artificial perspiration immersion and washing (PW). Despite using the least amount of conductive yarn, the MS structure exhibited the lowest surface resistance (3.18 Ω/m2) and the highest heating temperature (156 °C), due to its floating segments. In contrast, the CB structure showed the highest r

Investigation of electrical conductivity changes during brain functional activity in 3T MRI.

Blood oxygenation level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is widely used to visualize brain activation regions by detecting hemodynamic responses associated with increased metabolic demand. Although alternative MRI methods have been employed to monitor functional activities, the investigation of in-vivo electrical property changes during brain function remains limited. In this study, the relationship between fMRI signals and electrical conductivity (measured at the Larmor frequency) changes was explored using phase-based electrical property tomography. Results revealed con
