Language mapping is commonly practiced in brain tumors and epilepsy surgeries. It is done by direct electrical stimulation of the brain during awake craniotomy or by placing subdural electrodes on the brain's surface, or both. Studies of the language mapping in bi- or multi-lingual patients have concluded that they have both "language-specific areas," in which symptoms are evoked upon stimulation in one specific language and not in the other languages, and "common areas" or "overlapping areas," in which positive findings are evoked in all languages evaluated. The distribution of the pattern of

PURPOSE: In this report, the 3-year rehabilitation of a 43-year-old male patient, who have pelvic 'open book' fracture, urinary bladder and urethral injury, lumbosacral plexus avulsion trauma and right lower extremity monoparesis is explained.
METHOD: Rehabilitation of these injuries is absolutely essential to ensure optimal functional recovery. But the value of electrical stimulation for denervated muscle is not proven and its application to gain what may only be a small benefit is often not justified.
CONCLUSIONS: With this case I emphasize that electrical stimulation and appropriate exerc

The purpose of this collective review is to discuss the technique and effectiveness of rectal probe electroejaculation in conjunction with various assistive reproductive modalities. The electroejaculation probe is positioned inside the anal ring with the electrodes placed against the prostate gland and seminal vesicles, after which electrostimulation is begun. Rectal probe electroejaculation must be always employed in a hospital setting to detect and prevent autonomic dysreflexia. This technology is considered the best approach in patients with spinal cord injury levels below T10 or in other p

Electrical stimulation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, analogous to pacing the human heart, is an attractive idea. This is because these organs, like the heart, have their own natural pacemakers, and the electrical signals they generate can be altered by externally delivering certain types of electric currents via intraluminal or serosal electrodes to certain areas of the GI tract. A number of studies on animals have been accomplished successfully to treat a variety of disease models, including gastroparesis, dumping, and short bowel syndrome. Over the past 10 years or so, electrical stimu

Electrical stimulation has been reported to be effective for stress incontinence, cure and improvement rates being reported to range from 30% to 50%, and from 6% to 90%, respectively. However, clinical application of this treatment is not common because there is little physiological and technical information. Electrodes for electrical stimulation are divided into two types: external (non-implantable) and internal (implantable), and there are two methods of stimulation: chronic (long-term, continuous) and short-term. Frequencies of 20-50 Hz, with a pulse duration of 1-5 ms, have been reported t

To evaluate the effectiveness of lateral electrical spinal stimulation for idiopathic scoliosis, 87 patients treated with this modality were reviewed retrospectively. All patients had no prior treatment, had a documented progression of more than 5 degrees, and were skeletally immature. Forty-seven patients were compliant and followed until skeletal maturity or institution of other treatment. Fifty percent of patients with a high probability of progression required surgery. For compliant patients, 51% progressed 5 degrees or more and 36% progressed 10 degrees or more or required a change to ano

Most functional electrical stimulation (FES) research has focused on the spinal cord-injured patient whose muscles are paralyzed but still maintain their innervation. This article details the investigation of FES of the laryngeal muscles. In time, FES may become a useful treatment for bilateral vocal cord paralysis (BVCP) and for some laryngeal movement disorders.

Patients with hemiplegia frequently have difficulty in walking due to lack of eversion and dorsiflexion capability of the foot. One method of treating these patients utilizes functional electrical stimulation (FES). The effect of FES on locomotion, co-ordination, proprioception and balance sense was assessed using instrumented gait analysis and a postural sway test. In general patients treated with FES showed either a marked improvement or very little change. Any improvement was reflected in postural sway and ankle control during locomotion. Changes in hip and knee control were insignificant.

Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) aims to alter brain function non-invasively by applying current to electrodes on the scalp. Decades of research and technological advancement are associated with a growing diversity of tES methods and the associated nomenclature for describing these methods. Whether intended to produce a specific response so the brain can be studied or lead to a more enduring change in behavior (e.g. for treatment), the motivations for using tES have themselves influenced the evolution of nomenclature, leading to some scientific, clinical, and public confusion. Motor evoked potentials (MEP) were recorded in a total of 145 patients with supratentorial (N = 29), infratentorial (N = 25) and spinal (N = 91) lesions affecting the descending pathways. In all cases potentials were evoked by electrical, in addition in 55 of them by electromagnetic stimulation of the motor cortex. The peripheral conduction time was determined in all patients by electrical stimulation of the cervical and lumbar nerve roots, respectively. This study was designed to compare both stimulation techniques (electrical vs. electromagnetic) regarding their significance in recording of

Depending on the localization of the lesion, spinal cord ataxia is the most common type of ataxia in horses. Most prevalent diagnoses include cervical vertebral stenotic myelopathy (CVSM), equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM), trauma and equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy (EDM). Other causes of ataxia and weakness are associated with infectious causes, trauma and neoplasia. A neurologic examination is indispensable to identify the type of ataxia. In addition, clinical neurophysiology offers tools to locate functional abnormalities in the central and peripheral nervous system. Clinical

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a central nervous system (CNS) disease with a high disability rate, and reconstructing motor function after SCI remains a global challenge. Recent advancements in rehabilitation and regenerative medicine offer new approaches to SCI repair. Electrical stimulation has been shown to alter cell membrane charge distribution, generating action potentials, and affecting cell behavior. This method aids axon regeneration and neurotrophic factor upregulation, crucial for nerve repair. Biomaterials, used as scaffolds or coatings in cell culture and tissue engineering, enhance

Tooth loss during the lifetime of an individual is common. A strategy to treat partial or complete edentulous patients is the placement of dental implants. However, dental implants are subject to bacterial colonization and biofilm formation, which cause an infection named peri-implantitis. The existing long-term treatments for peri-implantitis are generally inefficient. Thus, an electrical circuit was produced with zirconia (Zr) samples using a hot-pressing technique to impregnate silver (Ag) through channels and holes to create a path by LASER texturing. The obtained specimens were characteri

Interruptions in nonlinear wave propagation, commonly referred to as wave breaks, are typical of many complex excitable systems. In the heart they lead to lethal rhythm disorders, the so-called arrhythmias, which are one of the main causes of sudden death in the industrialized world. Progress in the treatment and therapy of cardiac arrhythmias requires a detailed understanding of the triggers and dynamics of these wave breaks. In particular, two very important questions are: 1) What determines the potential of a wave break to initiate re-entry? and 2) How do these breaks evolve such that the s
