Electroacupuncture alleviates intrauterine adhesion through regulating autophagy in rats.

Autophagy is a well-conserved metabolic system that maintains homeostasis by relying on lysosomal breakdown. The endometrium of patients with intrauterine adhesion (IUA) and an animal model exhibits impaired autophagy. Autophagy is negatively correlated with inflammation. Activation of autophagy can inhibit the inflammatory response, while defects in autophagy will activate the inflammatory response. Here, we studied whether electroacupuncture (EA) inhibits inflammation and promotes endometrial injury repair by activating endometrial autophagy. The IUA animal model was established by mechanica

Electroacupuncture may alleviate neuropathic pain via suppressing P2X7R expression.

Neuropathic pain is a severe problem that is difficult to treat clinically. Reducing abnormal remodeling of dendritic spines/synapses and increasing the anti-inflammatory effects in the spinal cord dorsal horn are potential methods to treat this disease. Previous studies have reported that electroacupuncture (EA) could increase the pain threshold after peripheral nerve injury. However, the underlying mechanism is unclear. P2X7 receptors (P2X7R) mediate the activation of microglia and participate in the occurrence and development of neuropathic pain. We hypothesized that the effects of EA on re

Electroacupuncture Alleviates Bladder Overactivity via Inhabiting Bladder P2X3 Receptor.

Electroacupuncture (EA) has been widely applied for overactive bladder, but the mechanism of its action remains to be clarified. This study was aimed to investigate EA regulating the effect of purinergic signaling in the OAB of rats. Electroacupuncture (continuous wave, 30 Hz, 1 mA) was applied to stimulate the Ciliao point (BL32) and the Huiyang point (BL35) of rats. Results showed that when the P2X3 receptor in bladder peripheral level and the spinal cord central level was involved in the bladder micturition reflex of the afferent signaling, intravenous administration P2X3 antagonist AF-353

Clinical application of electroacupuncture in enhanced recovery after surgery.

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is currently the recommended surgical strategy, the main content of which is to reduce perioperative stress response and postoperative complications through perioperative multimodal analgesia and intensive surgery. Since ERAS was introduced, many rehabilitation medicine teams have been deeply involved, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, nutrition therapy and psychological counseling. However, ERAS lacks several powerful means to address perioperative prognostic issues. Therefore, how to further improve the effects of ERAS, reduce perioperat

Electroacupuncture Improves Cognition in Rats With Sepsis-Associated Encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is a common complication of sepsis. Although sepsis is effectively managed with the administration of antibiotics and source control, which may include surgical intervention, SAE usually leads to prolonged cognitive dysfunction affecting the quality of life of the patients. In this study, we investigated the possible effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on cognition in a model of SAE induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The rats were randomly divided into four groups: the control group, the CLP group, the CLP with

Electroacupuncture as an Adjunctive Therapy for Bell's Palsy: A Case Report.

Bell's palsy is the most common cause of acute unilateral lower motor neuron-type facial nerve paralysis and is generally managed with early administration of corticosteroids, with or without antiviral therapy. Although most patients experience substantial recovery, a clinically meaningful subset-including older adults, individuals with delayed presentation, and those with comorbid medical conditions-may be left with incomplete resolution, with persistent facial weakness, asymmetry, or synkinesis. Electroacupuncture (EA) has been proposed as an adjunctive treatment modality for facial nerve re

A neuroanatomical basis for electroacupuncture to drive the vagal-adrenal axis.

Somatosensory autonomic reflexes allow electroacupuncture stimulation (ES) to modulate body physiology at distant sites1-6 (for example, suppressing severe systemic inflammation6-9). Since the 1970s, an emerging organizational rule about these reflexes has been the presence of body-region specificity1-6. For example, ES at the hindlimb ST36 acupoint but not the abdominal ST25 acupoint can drive the vagal-adrenal anti-inflammatory axis in mice10,11. The neuroanatomical basis of this somatotopic organization is, however, unknown. Here we show that PROKR2Cre-marked sensory neurons, which innervat

Functional characterization of nociceptive mechanisms involved in fibromyalgia and electroacupuncture.

The diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain in diseases such as fibromyalgia (FM) are lacking effective standardised protocols that can be widely accessed and implemented by healthcare professionals across the globe. Persistent hyperalgesia and allodynia are characteristic symptoms of FM. This disease has indicated a refractory tendency to conventional treatment ventures, largely resultant from a lack of etiological and pathogenic understanding of the disease development. Emerging evidence indicates that the central nervous system (CNS) plays a critical role in the amplification of pain signal

Effect of Electroacupuncture on Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in Rats.

Acupuncture has long been used to relieve some inner ear diseases such as deafness and tinnitus. The present study examined the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in animals. A NIHL rat model was established. Electroacupuncture pretreatment at 2 Hz or posttreatment at the right Zhongzhu (TE3) acupoint was applied for 1 hour. Auditory thresholds were measured using auditory brainstem responses (ABRs), and histopathology of the cochlea was examined. The results indicated that the baseline auditory threshold of ABR was not significantly different between the co

The treatment of cranio-facial pain by electroacupuncture and laser irradiation.

Craniofacial neuralgias represent an interesting medical challenge, especially regarding the complex therapeutical aspects. Our study was performed treating more than 700 patients, applying steel inox needles variable in diameters and length for about 20 minutes, with a total application number ranging between 10 and 20. Results have been defined referring to a 4-grades response scale: excellent, good, fairly good and insufficient. It is important to emphasise that the best results have been achieved with patients who chose the acupuncture as the first therapeutic approach, while patients who

[Effect of auricular electroacupuncture on the motor manifestations of nociceptive reactions].

The effect of low frequency auricular electroacupuncture (EAP) on electromyographic responses (EMGR) of the anterior belly of the digastruc muscle, elicited by stimulation of tooth pulp was studied in cat experiments. It was shown that observed augmentation of the EMGR amplitude produced by EAP depended on tonic activation of gamma-motoneurons of the muscle. This activation directly correlated with EAP intensity. At the same time the latent period of EMGR increased by one-two synapses on account of inhibiting shorter pathways in the afferent part of the reflex arch with intensive EAP. The inhi
