Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a cancer therapy that conjugates the administration of a chemotherapy agent to the delivery of permeabilizing pulses released singularly or as bursts. This approach results in higher number of anticancer molecules delivered to their biological targets, but is also associated to undesirable side effects such as pain and muscular contractions. A new electroporator delivering train of eight biphasic pulses at the voltage of 1,300 V/cm lasting 50 + 50 µsec each, with a frequency of 1 Hz, and with 10-µsec interpulse intervals (total treatment time: 870 µsec/cm(2) of tre

BACKGROUND: Treatment of early and multiple cutaneous unresectable recurrences is a major therapeutic problem with around 80% of patients relapsing within 5 years. For lesions refractory to elective treatments, electrochemotherapy (ECT) involving electroporation combined with antineoplastic drug treatment appears to be a new potential option. This study was undertaken to analyze the short- and long-term responses of lesions treated with ECT with intravenous injection of bleomycin in melanoma patients with in-transit disease or distant cutaneous metastases.
METHODS: Between June 2007 and Septe

Treatment of multiple cutaneous and subcutaneous melanoma metastases is still represents a therapeutic challenge for both dermatologists and oncologists. Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a promising therapeutic procedure, owing to its ability to improve the penetration of cytotoxic drugs into cancer cells by application of current electric pulses. The aim of our study is to evaluate efficacy, tolerability and long-term efficacy of ECT in the treatment of advanced metastatic melanoma. Thirty patients affected by a total of 654 cutaneous and subcutaneous melanoma metastatic nodules were recruited. A

BACKGROUND: Electrochemotherapy (ECT) combines chemotherapy and electroporation to increase drug uptake. Its role in cutaneous melanoma metastasis treatment is not well defined; indeed, few studies have been reported, without complete follow-up data.
AIM: To prospectively evaluate clinical activity and tolerability of ECT with i.v. bleomycin, and to analyze the response increase associated to repeated sessions, in the largest series of cutaneous melanoma metastases reported to date (n = 233).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 14 stage III relapsed/refractory patients were enrolled according to European

Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a new therapeutical technique that combines the administration of trains of biphasic pulses with the local application of poorly permeant anticancer molecules, thus obtaining increased chemotherapy uptake. The purpose of this study was to prospectively assess the adjuvant potentialities of ECT for the treatment of different incompletely excised canine sarcomas. Twenty-two privately owned dogs with incomplete surgical excision of high grade sarcomas were treated with bleomycin injected within the tumor bed (1.5 IU/mg) followed by the sequential application of trains

Skin metastases occur in 5-30% of breast cancer (BC) patients. Standard treatments include systemic therapies (chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, and immunotherapy) and local treatments (surgery and radiotherapy). Electrochemotherapy (ECT) could be another option in this setting based on preclinical and clinical studies. Aim of this review was to analyze the available evidence on ECT in skin metastases from BC. Studies reporting on ECT in skin metastases from BC were included in this review. Studies not reporting toxicity or tumor response or not reporting results separately from other primary c

Anal canal adenocarcinoma is generally treated like rectal cancer. Surgery is the standard treatment in early stages and neoadjuvant chemoradiation in locally advanced tumors. Local recurrences treatment paradigm often depends on the previous therapies of either surgery or radiotherapy or systemic therapy. We present the case of a patient with tubulovillous adenocarcinoma of the anal canal which relapsed after chemoradiation. The patient refused salvage surgery and was treated with definitive electrochemotherapy under general anesthesia. Tumor electroporation performed with the insertion of th

Electrochemotherapy is a combination of high electric field and anticancer drugs. The treatment basis is electroporation or electropermeabilization of the cell membrane. Electroporation is a threshold phenomenon and, for efficient treatment, an adequate local distribution of electric field within the treated tissue is important. When this local electric field is not enough, there is a regrown tumor cell; however, if it is stronger than necessary, permanent damage to the tissue occurs. In the treatment of dogs, electrochemotherapy is not yet an established treatment for mast cell tumor in veter

Multiple unresectable melanoma skin metastases pose a treatment problem, especially in centers where isolated limb perfusion is not available. We report the case of a 59-year-old woman who developed multiple small unresectable cutaneous melanoma metastases on the thigh after her lower limb was amputated. Electrochemotherapy with bleomycin resulted in good local control of the disease, with a complete response of the treated melanoma nodules (224 tumor nodules) after 4 treatment sessions. Comparison between electrochemotherapy using repetition frequency of the applied electric pulses of 1 Hz an

Despite the progress in immunotherapy and targeted therapy for patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma not all patients with loco-regional recurrences will respond to treatment. Electrochemotherapy is a relatively new treatment modality where the efficacy of a chemotherapeutic drug is enhanced by an electrical field. Here we report a case of a 68-year-old woman with a large therapy resistant inguinal lymph node melanoma metastasis complicated by bleeding that was successfully treated with electrochemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: The quality of life of patients undergoing oncologic treatment has become an important issue in recent years. Owing to potential mutilation following surgery for vulvar cancer, more conservative approaches have evolved with the integration of new local ablative therapies, such as electrochemotherapy. The aim of this study was to determine the quality of life of women with vulvar cancer recurrence treated with electrochemotherapy for nonpalliative purposes.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eleven patients with vulvar cancer recurrence were treated with electrochemotherapy from July 2020 to De

Published data on the combination of immunotherapy and electrochemotherapy (ECT) consistently indicate a benefit in tumor response, but an important question, the optimal timing for combination, remains unclear. We investigated the impact of the timing of the ECT/immunotherapy combination. A cohort of 170 stage IIIC–IV melanoma patients from the Insp-ECT registry were evaluated for toxicity and local, systemic and long-term responses after combined ECT/immunotherapy treatment. Three groups were compared: patients who received immunotherapy before, during and after ECT. Combined treatment with

BACKGROUND: Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a combined treatment method based on electroporation and simultaneous chemotherapy. In cases where radiotherapy has previously been used, surgery is often the only treatment option for vulvar cancer recurrence with potential resection of clitoris, vagina, urethra or anal sphincter. The unique advantage of ECT is its selectivity for cancer cells while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue. The aim of the study was to compare the ECT treatment of vulvar cancer recurrence for non-palliative purposes with surgical treatment.

Electrochemotherapy is a local ablative therapy that increases the cytotoxicity of either bleomycin or cisplatin by applying electric pulses (electroporation) to tumors. It has already been widely used throughout Europe for the treatment of various types of human and veterinary cutaneous tumors, with an objective response rate ranging from 70%-90%, depending on the tumor histotype. Recently, electrochemotherapy was introduced for the treatment of primary liver tumors, such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The complete response rate was 85% per treated lesion, with a durable response. Therefo

BACKGROUND: Electrochemotherapy (ECT) promotes the increased uptake of antitumor agents through the administration of permeabilizing electric pulses, thus enhancing chemotherapy effectiveness.
AIM: Our study aimed to describe the tolerability and efficacy of ECT alone or in association with surgery to manage solid neoplasms in equids.
METHODS: Medical records of equids with a diagnosis of malignant tumors treated with ECT alone or in combination with surgery were retrospectively evaluated. Each equid received local treatment within the tumors or the tumors' bed with cisplatin at the dose of

Squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) of the skin are commonly described in cats. Reported treatments include surgery, radiation therapy and photodynamic therapy. This preliminary study reports on the management of these lesions combining the local administration of bleomycin (plus hyaluronidase for a more uniform distribution) with permeabilizing biphasic electric pulses. Nine cats with SCC graded T(2)-T(4) were treated over a 5 year period, and each cat received two sessions of electrochemotherapy (ECT) 1 week apart. The side effects of this treatment were minimal and limited to mild erythema of th
