Neural dynamics of breaking continuous flash suppression.

Sensory input to the human visual system often becomes accessible to cognition and overt report during processing. We investigated neural precursors of conscious vision using EEG recordings and the popular breaking continuous flash suppression (bCFS) paradigm. In this technique, a mask consisting of high-contrast dynamic patterns is presented to one eye, predominating over a target stimulus presented to the other eye. The time needed for the target stimulus to overcome the suppression is thought to reflect the transition from unconscious to conscious perception. In bCFS trials with slow respon

Wronger than wrong: Graded mapping of the errors of an avatar in the performance monitoring system of the onlooker.

EEG studies show that observing errors in one's own or others' actions triggers specific electro-cortical signatures in the onlooker's brain, but whether the brain error-monitoring system operates according to graded or discrete rules is still largely unknown. To explore this issue, we combined immersive virtual reality with EEG recording in participants who observed an avatar reaching-to-grasp a glass from a first-person perspective. The avatar could perform correct or erroneous actions. Erroneous grasps were defined as small or large depending on the magnitude of the trajectory deviation fro

Modulation of Frontoparietal Neurovascular Dynamics in Working Memory.

Our perception of the world is represented in widespread, overlapping, and interactive neuronal networks of the cerebral cortex. A majority of physiological studies on the subject have focused on oscillatory synchrony as the binding mechanism for representation and transmission of neural information. Little is known, however, about the stability of that synchrony during prolonged cognitive operations that span more than just a few seconds. The present research, in primates, investigated the dynamic patterns of oscillatory synchrony by two complementary recording methods, surface field potentia

Event-related desynchronization (ERD) in the alpha band during a hand mental rotation task.

Recent studies have demonstrated that mentally rotating the hands involves participants engaging in motor imagery processing. However, far less is known about the possible neurophysiological basis of such processing. To contribute to a better understanding of hand mental rotation processing, event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP) methods were applied to electroencephalography (EEG) data collected from participants mentally rotating their hands. Time-frequency analyses revealed that alpha-band power suppression was larger over central-parietal regions. This is in accordance with motor image

Electrophysiological activity is associated with vulnerability of Internet addiction in non-clinical population.

This study investigated the electrophysiological activity associated with vulnerability of problematic Internet use in non-clinical population. The resting EEG spectrum of alpha (8-13 Hz) rhythm was measured in 22 healthy subjects who have used the Internet for recreational purpose. The vulnerability of Internet addiction was assessed using Young's Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and Assessment for Computer and Internet Addiction-Screener (AICA-S) respectively. Depression and impulsivity were also measured with Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Barratt Impulsiveness Scale 11(BIS-11) respective

Eye contact during joint attention with a humanoid robot modulates oscillatory brain activity.

Eye contact established by a human partner has been shown to affect various cognitive processes of the receiver. However, little is known about humans' responses to eye contact established by a humanoid robot. Here, we aimed at examining humans' oscillatory brain response to eye contact with a humanoid robot. Eye contact (or lack thereof) was embedded in a gaze-cueing task and preceded the phase of gaze-related attentional orienting. In addition to examining the effect of eye contact on the recipient, we also tested its impact on gaze-cueing effects (GCEs). Results showed that participants rat

Event-Related Beta EEG Changes During Active, Passive Movement and Functional Electrical Stimulation of the Lower Limb.

A number of electroencephalographic (EEG) studies have reported on event-related desynchronization/synchronization (ERD/ERS) during active movements, passive movements, and the movements induced by functional electrical stimulation (FES). However, the quantitative differences in ERD values and affected frequency bands associated with the lower limb have not been discussed. The goal of this paper was to quantitatively compare the ERD patterns during active movement, passive movement and FES-induced movement of the lower limb. 64-channel EEG signals were recorded to investigate the brain oscilla

Classification of autism spectrum disorder using supervised learning of brain connectivity measures extracted from synchrostates.

OBJECTIVE: The paper investigates the presence of autism using the functional brain connectivity measures derived from electro-encephalogram (EEG) of children during face perception tasks. APPROACH: Phase synchronized patterns from 128-channel EEG signals are obtained for typical children and children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The phase synchronized states or synchrostates temporally switch amongst themselves as an underlying process for the completion of a particular cognitive task. We used 12 subjects in each group (ASD and typical) for analyzing their EEG while processing fearfu

Transcranial alternating current stimulation over multiple brain areas with non-zero phase delays other than 180 degrees modulates visuospatial working memory performance.

While zero-phase lag synchronization between multiple brain regions has been widely observed, relatively recent reports indicate that systematic phase delays between cortical regions reflect the direction of communications between cortical regions. For example, it has been suggested that a non-zero phase delay of electroencephalography (EEG) signals at the gamma frequency band between the bilateral parietal areas may reflect the direction of communication between these areas. We hypothesized that the direction of communication between distant brain areas might be modulated by multi-site transc

Brain functional connectivity in chronic tic disorders and Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

The pathophysiology of chronic tic disorder (cTD) and Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is characterized by the dysfunction of both motor and non - motor cortico - striatal - thalamo - cortical (CSTC) circuitries, which leads to tic release and comorbids. A role of fronto - parietal network (FPN) connectivity breakdown has been postulated for tic pathogenesis, given that the FPN entertain connections with limbic, paralimbic, and CSTC networks. Our study was aimed at characterizing the FPN functional connectivity in cTD and GTS in order to assess the role of its deterioration in tic severity

Phase-Locked Inhibition, but Not Excitation, Underlies Hippocampal Ripple Oscillations in Awake Mice In Vivo.

Sharp wave-ripple (SWR) oscillations play a key role in memory consolidation during non-rapid eye movement sleep, immobility, and consummatory behavior. However, whether temporally modulated synaptic excitation or inhibition underlies the ripples is controversial. To address this question, we performed simultaneous recordings of excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs and IPSCs) and local field potentials (LFPs) in the CA1 region of awake mice in vivo. During SWRs, inhibition dominated over excitation, with a peak conductance ratio of 4.1 ± 0.5. Furthermore, the amplitude of SWR

Evolution of source EEG synchronization in early Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) disrupts functional connectivity in distributed cortical networks. We analyzed changes in the S-estimator, a measure of multivariate intraregional synchronization, in electroencephalogram (EEG) source space in 15 mild AD patients versus 15 age-matched controls to evaluate its potential as a marker of AD progression. All participants underwent 2 clinical evaluations and 2 EEG recording sessions on diagnosis and after a year. The main effect of AD was hyposynchronization in the medial temporal and frontal regions and relative hypersynchronization in posterior cingulate,

Gamma-band synchronisation in a frontotemporal auditory information processing network.

Neural oscillations are fundamental mechanisms of the human brain that enable coordinated activity of different brain regions during perceptual and cognitive processes. A frontotemporal network generated by means of gamma oscillations and comprising the auditory cortex (AC) and the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) has been shown to be involved in the cognitively demanding auditory information processing. This study aims to reveal patterns of functional and effective connectivity within this network in healthy subjects by means of simultaneously recorded electroencephalography (EEG) and function

Disturbed temporal dynamics of brain synchronization in vision loss.

Damage along the visual pathway prevents bottom-up visual input from reaching further processing stages and consequently leads to loss of vision. But perception is not a simple bottom-up process - rather it emerges from activity of widespread cortical networks which coordinate visual processing in space and time. Here we set out to study how vision loss affects activity of brain visual networks and how networks' activity is related to perception. Specifically, we focused on studying temporal patterns of brain activity. To this end, resting-state eyes-closed EEG was recorded from partially blin

Inter-hemispheric frontal alpha synchronization of event-related potentials reflects memory-induced mental fatigue.

Mental fatigue is often associated with continuous brain activities in our daily life. It can diminish efficiency and increase errors. However, the related physiological features are still not clear and under exploration. The present study investigated changes of inter-hemispheric synchronization in event-related potentials (ERPs) due to mental fatigue during sustained memory processing. Twenty-six participants performed a continuous two-back memory task for around 2.5h. Prefrontal and frontal synchronies in the alpha frequency band (8-13Hz) were analyzed because of their close relationships w

Characterizing functional connectivity patterns during saliva swallows in different head positions.

BACKGROUND: The anatomical rationale and efficacy of the chin tuck in improving airway protection for some people with swallowing disorders have been well researched and established. However, there are still open questions regarding whether brain activity for swallowing control is altered while performing this chin-tuck maneuver. METHODS: In this study, we collected EEG signals from 55 healthy adults while swallowing in the neutral and chin-tuck head positions. The time-frequency based synchrony measure was used to form brain networks. We investigated both the small-world properties of these

Transcranial alternating current stimulation for investigating complex oscillatory dynamics and interactions.

Neural oscillations play a fundamental role in human cognition and behavior. While electroencephalography (EEG) and related methods provide precise temporal recordings of these oscillations, they are limited in their ability to generate causal conclusions. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) has emerged as a promising non-invasive neurostimulation technique to modulate neural oscillations, which offers insights into their functional role and relation to human cognition and behavior. Originally, tACS is applied between two or more electrodes at a given frequency. However, recent
