EOG Signal Classification with Wavelet and Supervised Learning Algorithms KNN, SVM and DT.

The work carried out in this paper consists of the classification of the physiological signal generated by eye movement called Electrooculography (EOG). The human eye performs simultaneous movements, when focusing on an object, generating a potential change in origin between the retinal epithelium and the cornea and modeling the eyeball as a dipole with a positive and negative hemisphere. Supervised learning algorithms were implemented to classify five eye movements; left, right, down, up and blink. Wavelet Transform was used to obtain information in the frequency domain characterizing the EOG

[Neck-deep immersion effects on gaze fixation by primates].

Effects of load deprivation on gaze fixation were studies in two primates (Macaca mulatta) immersed neck-deep twice with a two-week interval. Gaze fixation was traced using electrooculography and measurement of head turn velocity in 5 hours since the beginning of immersion. Decrease of the maximum head velocity and vestibuloocular reflex gain in both animals were significantly higher in the second compared with the first period of immersion and the results of previous investigations with three primates repeatedly immersed chest-deep. During the second neck-deep immersion, loss of head velocity

Wallenberg's syndrome: neurotological classification.

OBJECTIVES: Visually induced eye movements were investigated in 26 patients with Wallenberg's syndrome. METHODS: Slow-phase optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) velocities, pursuit gains, and percentage fixation suppression (%FS) of caloric nystagmus were recorded by DC electrooculography (EOG), and stored directly onto FM magnetic tape. RESULTS: OKN velocities, pursuit gains, and %FS decreased toward the lesion side (group A), whereas OKN velocities and pursuit gains decreased toward the side contralateral to the lesion side. %FS decreased toward the lesion side (group B). MR images in group A showe

Study of congenital nystagmus: optokinetic nystagmus.

A severe defect of optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) was found in 46 patients with congenital nystagmus. Abnormal patterns of OKN, such as superimposition of pendular oscillations on the optokinetic slow component and inversion of OKN, were observed. Optokinetic gain (eye movement velocity/drum velocity) was decreased compared to that in normal subjects, and optokinetic after-nystagmus, or transient persistence of OKN after cessation of visual stimulation, was absent. These findings suggest that there is a defect in the subcortical optokinetic system in congenital nystagmus. Optokinetic responses di

Neurophysiological basis of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder: informing future drug development.

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia characterized by a history of recurrent nocturnal dream enactment behavior and loss of skeletal muscle atonia and increased phasic muscle activity during REM sleep: REM sleep without atonia. RBD and associated comorbidities have recently been identified as one of the most specific and potentially sensitive risk factors for later development of any of the alpha-synucleinopathies: Parkinson's disease, dementia with Lewy bodies, and other atypical parkinsonian syndromes. Several other sleep-related abnormalities have recently

[Maculopathy with subretinal yellow deposits].

We present the case of a 52-year-old female patient who presented with bilateral loss of vision over the course of several years. Funduscopy revealed multiple drusen in a "honeycomb"-like configuration at the entire posterior pole and in the peripapillary region. Autofluorescence and fluorescence angiography (FLA) showed multiple hyperfluorescent defects which show no leakage due to staining of the drusen-like lesions. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) revealed a marked irregularity of the photoreceptor-retinal pigment epithelium complex. Electroretinography (ERG) was without pathological fin

Electroencephalographic and polygraphic features of 24-hour recordings in sleeping sickness and healthy African subjects.

Electroencephalographic (EEG) and polygraphic features were analysed in six healthy control subjects and eight patients suffering from sleeping sickness meningoencephalitis in order to determine possible functional relationships. One patient was disqualified because of intermittent metabolic disease. Twenty-four h polygraphic recordings-EEG, electrooculography (EOG), electromyography (EMG), nasal and buccal air flow, chest respiratory movements-were performed continuously both on paper and on cassette tapes. Tapes were played back on paper (paper speed: 15 mm/s). Traces were analyzed for norma

A novel EOG-based wireless rapid communication device for people with motor neuron diseases.

In this study, a new electrooculography (EOG) based system that provides efficient communication for people suffered from motor neuron diseases is presented. The system consists of two distinct devices. The first device operates as a main unit that is activated by the subject's eye movements. This unit is capable of transmitting 10 different command/state messages. These messages enable subject to choose his/her situation such as "I'm fine", "I feel bad", "I'm hungry" and "I'm thirsty". Commands such as "Come", "Go". The number of messages can be increased. The main unit acquires the EOG signa

Spider-Silk-Inspired Hierarchical Nanofiber Architectures Enabling Environmentally Robust Multifunctional Sensing for Eye-Fatigue Monitoring and Bioprotection.

Electrooculography (EOG) offers a direct electrophysiological window for objective fatigue assessment under prolonged visual load. However, skin-mounted EOG sensors face an inherent trade-off between maintaining signal stability and ensuring long-term wearability and skin comfort. Herein, inspired by spider-silk architectures, we report an environmentally robust, multifunctional EOG-fusion sensor based on a hierarchically engineered, cavity-structured bioelectrode that integrates an uncarbonized PAN@MXene-ZIF spacer with a carbonized conductive core. This state-engineered architecture enables

[A case of HTLV-I associated myelopathy with flutter-like oscillation].

We reported a 37-year-old woman showing HTLV-I associated myelopathy (HAM) with flutter-like oscillation of the eyes. She had a 15-year history of spastic paraplegia and noticed visual quaking at the age of 37 years. On neurological examination, she showed spasticity in both lower extremities, hyperreflexia in the extremities, neurogenic bladder, and transient, horizontal and pendular ocular oscillation. Anti HTLV-I antibody titers in serum and cerebrospinal fluid were significantly elevated. Brain CT scan revealed no particular abnormalities. In electrooculography, the oscillation consisted o

Quantitative evaluation of blinking in blepharospasm using electrooculogram-integrated smart eyeglasses.

Smart eyeglasses with an integrated electrooculogram (EOG) device (JINS MEME ES_R®, JINS Inc.) were evaluated as a quantitative diagnostic tool for blepharospasm. Participants without blepharospasm (n = 21) and patients with blepharospasm (n = 19) undertook two voluntary blinking tests (light and fast) while wearing the smart eyeglasses. Vertical (Vv) and horizontal (Vh) components were extracted from time-series voltage waveforms recorded during 30 s of the blinking tests. Two parameters, the ratio between the maximum and minimum values in the power spectrum (peak-bottom ratio, Fourier transf

[Quantitative analysis of smooth pursuit eye movement].

Abnormalities of smooth pursuit eye movement (SPEM) have been estimated, mainly using the wave form on an electro-oculogram, in a qualitative way. Many methods for quantitative analysis of SPEM have been designed, though most are still uncommon in present clinical use. Using a personal computer, we developed a method of automatic quantitative analysis of ocular tracking eye movement recorded by electro-oculography (EOG). The design concept of this method is based on the observation that eye movement during ocular tracking consists of two different kinds of eye movements, one is SPEM and the ot

[Functional study in early strabismus: translucent screens and electro-nystagmography].

The symptoms of infantile strabismus are triggered by fixation, chiefly monocular fixation. On the excluded eye, "occlusion deviations" (elevation, esodeviation, extorsion) are well observed through a "translucent" unilateral cover. These deviations are super-imposed upon a position of rest without fixation which may be an orthoposition, well observed through bilateral translucent occluders. They are caused by a rupture of binocular retinal stimuli which does not mean rupture of fusion (ex: the darkening Bielschowsky test). Electro-oculographic studies confirm the prevalence of adduction durin

Low-frequency harmonic acceleration in the evaluation of surgical treatment of Meniere's disease.

23 patients with classical findings of Meniere's disease and so diagnosed by a neurotologist were tested with harmonic acceleration. 7 of these patients were selected to receive endolymphatic-mastoid shunts for intractable vertigo and/or highly progressive fluctuant hearing loss. All 7 patients showed an increase in the impairment in their phase relationships at the lowest frequency (0.01Hz) following surgery which was considered to be secondary to the procedure. Later this phase lag returned to a level approaching normal. They also showed a definite decrease in the asymmetry (labyrinthine pre

Polysomnographic analysis of bruxism.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) defines sleep bruxism as a stereotyped movement disorder characterized by clenching and grinding of the teeth during sleep. Bruxism is found in 14%-20% of children, 8% of adults <60 years old, and 3% of adults >60 years old. The mandibular movements of bruxism can be confused with rhythmic mandibular movements associated with other sleep disorders, such as arousals/microarousals, limb movement disorder, and obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome. Polysomnography (PSG) is the study of sleep disorders based on the recording of physiological events

Vertical saccades and the "rider artifact".

Quantitative studies of vertical saccades are sparse, due to a lack of reliable recording techniques. In this study, electro-oculographic (EOG) and photo-electronystagmographic (PENG) techniques showed that up-directed saccades were faster than down-directed ones. In the EOG recording, however, the velocity of the up-directed saccade was correlated to the size of an artifact caused by movement of the upper eye lid. Further investigations are needed to analyse the characteristics of vertical eye movements.
