Fatal venous air embolism following intravenous infusion.

Venous air embolism has been reported as a complication of invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures or accidental trauma. Little is known about the incidence of air embolism after minimal intravenous manipulations such as the insertion of a peripheral intravenous cannula. Only when large amounts of air sufficient enough to block the cardiovascular system enter, the patient develops symptoms and signs of severe neurological injury, cardiovascular collapse, or death. The dead body of a 14-year-old boy was brought for postmortem examination with allegations of death from negligence during t

Venous air embolism in deep brain stimulation.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: During the placement of electrodes for deep brain stimulation (DBS), patients are commonly in a seated position, awake, and spontaneously breathing. Air may be entrained through bone or dural veins causing venous air emboli (VAE) and this phenomenon can result in significant hemodynamic changes. Although VAEs have been described in many types of neurosurgical procedures, their incidence during DBS surgery is unknown. METHODS: Following approval from the Institutional Review Board, the University of Florida Movement Disorders Center database comprising 286 DBS leads placed sin

[Cerebral air embolism after central venous catheter].

Introduction of air into the arterial circulation can cause cerebral air embolism, leading to severe neurological deficits. A case is reported on a patient suffering from fatal cerebral air embolism after a subclavian vein catheter had been inserted. The risks associated with inserting and removing central venous catheters are described. Apart from the pathogenesis of a paradoxical air embolism in a patient with a right-to-left shunt due to a patent foramen ovale, air embolism can occur if a large amount of air traverses the pulmonary circulation. The ability of the pulmonary vasculature to fi

Post-traumatic cerebral air embolism. Case report.

A case of post-traumatic cerebral air embolism is presented. In the chest-X-radiography fractures of many ribs and hemo-pneumothorax were visible on the right side associated with intra-alveolar, interstitial hemorrhages and mediastinal emphysema. At the end of a CT scan of the head appeared features of arterial air embolism. The patient was diagnosed as brain dead and cardiac arrest occurred one hour after.

Venous air embolism through a Groshong catheter.

Individuals with cancer frequently require long-term central venous access to deliver chemotherapy, blood products, and other fluids. A rare, but potentially lethal complication associated with central venous catheterization is venous air embolism which occurs most commonly after damage or disconnection at the catheter hub. The Groshong (Bard Access Systems, UT) catheter is a device with a unique three-position valve at its distal tip which eliminates the need for routine heparin flushing and minimizes the risk of venous air embolism. This report describes for the first time a near fatal venou

[Cerebral air embolism after percutaneous lung puncture].

Cerebral air embolism is a rare but serious complication to percutaneous transthoracic fine needle aspiration of the lung. A case is described after puncture of a tumour in the right lung with a 0.6 mm needle. The patient developed paralysis of the upper and lower extremities on his left side, probably due to an air embolism in the right middle cerebral artery. He was fully restituted after early hyperbaric treatment with oxygen.

Fatal air embolism during female autoerotic practice.

Air embolism has been described in pregnant women and is a classic cause of death during attempted abortion by syringing. Death was caused by the introduction of an amount of air sufficient to cause a substantial air lock in the heart, pulmonary trunk or arteries. If the surface of the placenta has been stripped by the syringe, venous spaces are opened and air can pass into the circulation. Orogenital sex with vaginal insufflation can also cause air embolism during pregnancy. We report a case of air embolism in a 40-year-old non-pregnant woman subsequent to vaginal insertion of a foreign body

Parameters affecting occurrence of paradoxical air embolism.

The effects of different patterns of ventilation and intravascular volume infusion on the occurrence of paradoxical air embolism (PAE) were evaluated in 15 pigs with a surgically created atrial septal defect (ASD). A balloon atrial septostomy was created transvenously in anesthetized pigs (mean diameter 8.6 mm +/- 1 mm). Monitoring included transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) of the right and left heart, ECG, EEG, direct arterial pressure, right and left atrial pressures (RAP and LAP), pulmonary artery pressure, and pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP). With the animal in a head up til

[A case of posttraumatic cerebral air embolism].

We report a case of cerebral air embolism that occurred after chest trauma. The diagnosis was confirmed by CT and skull roentgenogram which demonstrated air bubbles in intracranial arteries. It is well recognized that cerebral air embolism is caused by various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and trauma. But it may often be overlooked because it is diagnosed clinically and there are no characteristic symptoms nor signs. Although various ways of treatment have been reported, prevention and early diagnosis are the most important. It is very rare that air bubbles are detected in skull roent

Cerebral Air Embolism After Air-Powder Abrasive Dental Treatment: A Case Report.

Cerebral air embolism (CAE) occurs in various clinical situations such as surgery, angiography, and hemodialysis; most are iatrogenic. Here we report the case of a 57-year-old man who developed CAE immediately after air-powder abrasive treatment, which is commonly used in dentistry. The patient underwent air-powder abrasive treatment for peri-implantitis, and immediately after the treatment, cardiac arrest occurred and cardio- pulmonary resuscitation was performed. After resuscitation, brain computed tomography performed in the emergency room showed scattered dark density presumed to be air. T

Intra-arterial air thrombogenesis after cerebral air embolism complicating lower extremity sclerotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral arterial gas embolism is a potentially life-threatening event. Intraarterial air can occlude blood flow directly or cause thrombosis. Sclerotherapy is an extremely rare cause of cerebral arterial gas embolism. METHOD: Case-report. RESULTS: A 38-year-old female suffered acute onset of a left middle cerebral artery (LMCA) syndrome with an NIH stroke score of 11 approximately ten minutes after lower extremity sclerotherapy. CT angiogram demonstrated LMCA intraarterial air. Patient fully recovered after hyperbaric oxygen treatment with complete resolution of intraarterial ai
