In the last decade, an increasing number of rheumatologists have been using ultrasound (US) for assessing patients with gout and calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD) disease. The high reflectivity of the crystalline aggregates and the ability of US to detect even minimal crystal deposits explain the high sensitivity of this imaging technique. Furthermore, the peculiar distribution within the target tissues results in the generation of typical US patterns and explains the excellent specificity of some US findings. The large spectrum of US findings and their wide combination generate differen

Anatomical features are described in a case of cephalothoracopagus female twins with laterally fused heads. There was a single foregut, shared equally by the two individuals. The tracheae, lungs, hearts, livers, and gallbladders were also shared by the two individuals. They were located in the anterior and posterior regions of the joined bodies. These peculiarities occur in other cases of cephalothoracopagus twinning reported in the literature, and may have been caused by spatial problems in the developing twin embryos. In particular, each heart is considered to be a composite organ, formed by

The urinary and genital systems are closely related in their development so that dividing them into separate divisions is often artificial. The lower urinary system begins as a cloaca. The urorectal septum then divides the cloaca into a ventral urogenital sinus and a dorsal hindgut. The ureteral bud forms off the mesonephric duct. The male and female genital systems are the same until the gonad assumes characteristics of the testis or ovary in the eighth week of gestation. It is not until the eleventh or twelfth week that the external genitalia assume specific sexual characteristics. Anomalies

Pathologists' assistants (PAs) are pivotal in healthcare, conducting autopsies and examining tissues under a pathologist's guidance. Embryology knowledge is crucial for PAs to accurately assess anomalies and identify pathologies. Yet, it is often overlooked in academic PA training programs. Given the cognitive demands on students and limited curricular time, integrating embryology requires the identification of vocationally relevant topics. This study sought to determine essential embryology learning objectives (LOs) for PAs by consulting practicing PAs and pathologists. Beginning with an init

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a common finding in the general population but may lead to serious conditions such as stroke from paradoxical embolism and platypnea orthodeoxia. A thorough understanding of the interatrial septal anatomy along with its assessment by different imaging modalities is critical in performing safe transcatheter PFO closure. Investigating the anatomy and right heart to left heart flows using transesophageal echocardiography or intracardiac echocardiography imaging must be done before undertaking closure of a PFO.

BACKGROUND: Cor triatriatum dexter (CTD) is a rare congenital cardiac anomaly resulting from persistence of the right valve of the sinus venosus. Clinical presentation varies from neonatal hypoxemia to incidental diagnosis in adulthood. Optimal management strategies remain poorly defined due to limited published literature.
METHODS: We report a single-center series of four patients diagnosed with CTD. Clinical presentation, echocardiographic findings, surgical management, and postoperative outcomes were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: All four patients presented in the neonatal period wit

The venous system within the tentorium cerebelli has diverse communications with the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem, and a thorough knowledge of the anatomy of this venous system is necessary for the safe and successful conduct of neurosurgical procedures and neuroendovascular treatments. This review outlines the embryologic development of the tentorium cerebelli and its adjacent venous structures, and the fundamental structure and classifications of the tentorial venous sinuses based on the embryologic background. The term tentorial sinus refers to any venous channel running within the t

Skin development is a tightly regulated, multistep process that transforms the embryonic surface into a complex organ composed of a stratified epidermis, dermal-epidermal junction, dermis, hypodermis and cutaneous appendages. This review provides a compartment-based, clinically oriented overview of human skin embryology, linking key developmental pathways to normal structure and inherited skin disorders. The epidermis arises from surface ectoderm through the coordinated activity of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) and Wnt signalling, with p63 maintaining the basal progenitor compartment requir

One in seven patients with focal epilepsy has a malformation of cortical development (MCD) as underlying cause. Understanding normal cortical development combined with knowledge of where, when, and what goes wrong in different types of MCD provides insight into the mechanisms of epileptogenesis. Three different steps can be distinguished in the development of the neocortex: proliferation, migration, and organization. These three steps occur at different locations, partly overlapping in time. In this review, we illustrate and correlate normal embryology to the most common MCDs in epilepsy, name

Abdominal wall defects are one of the most frequently encountered human congenital anomalies. They are seen in as many as 1 in 2,000 live births with evidence to suggest that their incidence is increasing. While often discussed together abdominal wall defects consist mainly of two entities namely gastroschisis and omphalocele. There are marked differences in their theories of embryo-pathogenesis, clinical presentation/anatomy and overall outcomes. There is no clear consensus explaining the precise embryological mechanisms leading to the development of abdominal wall defects. Many clinicians an

Orofacial clefts (OFCs) rank as the second most common congenital birth defect in the United States after Down syndrome and are the most common head and neck congenital malformations. They are classified as cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL/P) and cleft palate only (CPO). OFCs have significant psychological and socio-economic impact on patients and their families and require a multidisciplinary approach for management and counseling. A complex interaction between genetic and environmental factors contributes to the incidence and clinical presentation of OFCs. In this comprehensive rev

Craniofacial development, one of the most complex sequences of developmental events in embryology, features a uniquely transient, pluripotent stem cell-like population known as the neural crest (NC). Neural crest cells (NCCs) originate from the dorsal aspect of the neural tube and migrate along pre-determined routes into the developing branchial arches and frontonasal plate. The exceptional rates of proliferation and migration of NCCs enable their diverse contribution to a wide variety of craniofacial structures. Subsequent differentiation of these cells gives rise to cartilage, bones, and a n

The thoracic outlet is the space between the thorax and axilla through which the subclavian vein, subclavian artery, and brachial plexus travel from their central origins to their peripheral termini. Its bounds include the clavicle, first thoracic rib, insertion of the pectoralis minor muscle onto the coracoid process of the humerus, and the sternum. It contains three areas: the scalene triangle, the costoclavicular space, and the subcoracoid or pectoralis minor space. Aberrant anatomy is common in the thoracic outlet and may predispose patients to compression of the neurovascular bundle and d

Congenital abdominal wall defects are one of the most common human birth defects with an incidence of about 1 in 2000 live births. While often discussed together abdominal wall defects consist mainly of two distinct entities namely gastroschisis and omphalocele. There is no clear consensus explaining the precise embryological mechanisms leading to the development of an omphalocele. Many clinicians and embryologists have attempted to explain congenital malformation as a result of failure of progression of normal embryonic development. This review summarizes the mechanisms involved in normal and

This article discusses the development and anatomy of the nasal septum and structures of the lateral nasal wall. Emphasis is placed on anatomic variations associated with surgically correctable nasal obstruction. Common variations, such as deviated nasal septum, inferior turbinate hypertrophy, paradoxic middle turbinate, and concha bullosa, are discussed. Rare developmental causes of nasal obstruction are briefly outlined.

Urachus pathologies are very rare but require to be known by urologists. Lack of appropriate treatment exposes the patients to the risks of symptoms recurrence, infectious complications or adenocarcinomatous degeneration. A partial or total defect of obliteration of the urachus channel after the fifth month of gestation can be at the origin of four benign pathologies. The ombilicovesical fistula (47.6%) is diagnosed at the native period. In the adult, the most frequent form is the cyst (30.7%) whereas the external (16.4%) and internal sinus (3.2%) are rarer. Diagnosis depends on the clinical e

Bronchopulmonary foregut malformations (BPFM) are a heterogeneous group of pulmonary developmental anomalies that present at varying ages and with overlapping symptoms, signs and radiology. This article discusses the embryology of these lesions with reference to possible common origins and the link between aetiology and radiological appearance. The radiology of each lesion, both antenatally and postnatally, is described and illustrated. A number of quandaries exist in the prediction of prognosis and subsequent treatment of BPFM. We discuss the radiological features that may help to elucidate a

The scope of this review is the report of recent findings on the developmental anatomy of the human notochord and vertebral column and the related tumors, that is chordomas. Anatomy and histology of adult intervertebral discs are also described. All the topics are completed by histochemical and immunohistochemical findings. Location and incidence of notochordal vestiges in the adult are correlated to the development of chordomas which are also described for their clinical features, skeletal distribution, spread, prognosis, and treatment. Pathology of chordomas includes morbid anatomy, histopat
