Exposure of embryonic cells to alcohol: contrasting effects during preimplantation and postimplantation development.

Alcohol is a known teratogen that causes a broad variety of developmental anomalies, including fetal growth retardation, craniofacial anomalies, and neurological disorders. The etiology of this multiple defect syndrome, known as fetal alcohol syndrome, has been studied in animal models that reproduce many of the attributes of the human disease. These studies show that ethanol is most teratogenic during organogenesis and development of the nervous system. The molecular basis of fetal alcohol effects has been further investigated using embryo and cell culture systems. Recent studies show that si

Morphological characteristics of the developing human brain during the embryonic period.

Many features of the developing nervous system are visible from external observations of intact human embryos. In this study, a photographic atlas from the 4th to the 7th week after ovulation (Carnegie stages 10-18) is provided. The neural folds began to fuse at stage 10, and the rostral and caudal neuropore were closed during stages 11 and 12, respectively. The three primary divisions of the brain were distinguishable before closing of the neural tube. The five secondary brain vesicles were formed during stages 14-15. The development of the cerebellum and cerebrum were first observed at stage

Developmental asymmetries in experimental animals.

The early embryo orients to the antero-posterior axis and differentiates along this, and the dorso-ventral and lateral axes. From Drosophila melanogaster, detailed knowledge has accrued of how segmentation and dorso-ventral differentiation proceed, and of their genic control, mostly by selector and homeobox (Hox) genes. The study of the control of lateral differentiation, instead, has been largely neglected. Yet handed asymmetry (the "obvious" asymmetries of, for example, heart, lung, anatomical features of the nervous system, etc.) is basic and, possibly, universal. In the mouse, two genes co

The cranial base in normal and abnormal skull growth.

In the normal growth of the cranial base, an outline of prenatal development stressed the common vertebrate plan, the patterning of mesenchymal tissues formed from and influenced by migrating neural crest cells. Details are given of the sequences of chondrification and ossification. Postnatal growth is approached in two ways--sagittal growth and transverse growth--involving detailed consideration of sutural growth and of resorptive expansion and remodeling in the whole base. New conclusions have been reached about the growth of the ethmoid, which continues for a longer time than was generally

Hypoxia: From Placental Development to Fetal Programming.

Hypoxia may influence normal and different pathological processes. Low oxygenation activates a variety of responses, many of them regulated by hypoxia-inducible factor 1 complex, which is mostly involved in cellular control of O2 consumption and delivery, inhibition of growth and development, and promotion of anaerobic metabolism. Hypoxia plays a significant physiological role in fetal development; it is involved in different embryonic processes, for example, placentation, angiogenesis, and hematopoiesis. More recently, fetal hypoxia has been associated directly or indirectly with fetal progra

Comprehensive developmental mechanisms in gastroschisis.

INTRODUCTION: The development of gastroschisis remains an area of controversy. Various theories have been proposed, but none has ever been supported by a thorough embryological study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We herein report anatomical and microscopic observations of the developing abdominal wall and cord of embryos and fetuses, along with clinical features of gastroschisis. RESULTS: It appears that the developing cord normally has two parts, a firm left-sided part formed by the vessels and urachus, and a thin right-sided pouch covering the intestinal loops (the 'physiological umbilical hernia

The descent of testis and reason for failed descent.

Although an enormous number of theories have been proposed to explain the descent of testis, none has provided a satisfactory explanation that covers the whole spectrum. Recent evidence suggests a hitherto unrecognized mechanism. This novel explanation precisely defihes all of the factors proven to be involved in the process, and links the features associated with normal or failed descent. The gubernaculum gives rise to both smooth and striated muscles. The testis is descended through the processus vaginalis via the propulsive force generated by the muscles. Propulsion describes the risk of to

Hand development in trisomy 21.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate hand size and maturity in fetuses with trisomy 21 (Down syndrome). Twenty-five fetuses, crown-rump length (CRL) 55-222 mm, foot length (FL) 8-42 mm, were included in the study. After whole-body radiography (Hewlett Packard Faxitron), special radiographs of the hand and foot were taken. Hand length was measured as the length of the third finger from the distal tip of the distal phalanx to the proximal tip of the metacarpal bone, the digital-metacarpal length (DML). The lengths of the proximal phalangeal bone (PPL) and the metacarpal bone (MCL) of

Ossicula Bertini in human adults.

Remnants of ossicula Bertini in their embryological position, i.e., joined to the ethmoid, were found in three out of 20 adult individuals aged 17-23 years. The ossicles closed the inferior and/or a part of the anterior wall of the sphenoidal sinus, being joined to the wall of the sinus by sutures. The existence of these formations might be of importance in inflammation of the sphenoid sinus, or disease in or around the nasopharynx.

Overgrowth.

The predominant influences on fetal growth are maternal and placental factors. Post-natal growth is regulated by a complex interaction between genetic, environmental and hormonal influences. The role of the growth hormone insulin-like growth factor (GH-IGF) system is explored, including the emerging role of IGF-2 in fetal growth. Increasing understanding of the genetics of overgrowth and short stature syndromes is contributing greatly to basic understanding of growth regulation. A range of prenatal overgrowth syndromes is discussed, including those associated with neonatal hyperinsulinism and

Impacts of maternal dietary protein intake on fetal survival, growth, and development.

Maternal nutrition during gestation, especially dietary protein intake, is a key determinant in embryonic survival, growth, and development. Low maternal dietary protein intake can cause embryonic losses, intra-uterine growth restriction, and reduced postnatal growth due to a deficiency in specific amino acids that are important for cell metabolism and function. Of note, high maternal dietary protein intake can also result in intra-uterine growth restriction and embryonic death, due to amino acid excesses, as well as the toxicity of ammonia, homocysteine, and H2S that are generated from amino

Effect of maternal hypoglycaemia during gestation on materno-foetal nutrient transfer and embryo-foetal development: Evidence from experimental studies focused primarily on the rat.

Glucose is the major energy substrate during embryogenesis and the embryo is dependent on glucose from the maternal circulation to ensure normal metabolism and growth. The placenta plays a key role in this nutrient transfer in mammals, both during embryogenesis and after the development of the chorio-allantoic placental circulation. Maternal hypoglycaemia is accompanied by foetal hypoglycaemia and maternal counter-regulatory measures including a priority to keep nutrients in the maternal circulation by restricting their transfer to the foetus. Concomitantly, the foetus initiates its own counte

The growth of the testes during the fetal period.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the size and position of the fetal testes during gestation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study comprised 48 testes obtained from 24 human fetuses with no congenital abnormalities, aged 14-40 weeks. The development of the fetuses was evaluated by measuring the crown-rump length. Testicular size was assessed as the height, width, thickness and weight, and the position of testes determined during fetal development. RESULTS: The testes in 11 fetuses (22 testes) aged 14-37 weeks were in the abdominal cavity; no testis had descended to the scrotum in any fetus until 27 weeks

Congenital metatarsus adductus in early human fetal development: a histologic study.

Two feet with congenital metatarsus adductus from fetuses at early development (16 and 19 weeks of gestation) were studied by making serial histologic sections in the horizontal plane of the foot. It was observed that the shape of the medial cuneiform was altered and the first cuneometatarsal joint tilted toward the medial and dorsal directions. The first metatarsal appeared normal, whereas the other metatarsals were deformed in slight adduction at the metaphyseal level. Subluxation at the other cuneometatarsal joints and naviculocuneiform joint was not observed, and the navicular showed no si

"Wavy ribs". A reversible pathologic finding in rat fetuses.

A literature of 74 scientific papers addressing the occurrence of "wavy ribs" in fetuses of small rodents has been collected with the support of a computer-assisted search on MEDLINE, TOXLINE, BIOSIS and EXCERPTA MEDICA systems (1982-1993) and has been critically examined. Numerous compounds of a large variation in chemical structure and biological activity, if given to pregnant rats during the later period of organogenesis, are known to cause "wavy ribs" in their fetuses, a reversible pathologic finding which is rarely observed in untreated controls. According to literature, causative factors

The pathogenesis of craniosynostosis in the fetus.

Craniosynostosis occurs in approximately 1:2000 live births. It may affect the coronal, sagittal, metopic and lambdoid sutures in isolation or in combination. Although non-syndromic synostoses are more common, over 150 genetic syndromes have been identified. Recent advances in genetic mapping have linked chromosomal mutations with craniosynostotic syndromes. Despite the identification of these genetic mutations, the fundamental biomolecular mechanisms mediating cranial suture biology remain unknown. Today, many laboratories are investigating murine cranial suture biology as a model for human c
