Delivering effective end of life care in the emergency department: a nursing perspective.

The unpredictability of acute care, rising patient multimorbidity and the under-resourcing of community palliative care services mean that more patients are presenting to emergency services in the final stages of illness, with emergency departments (EDs) increasingly becoming places where people experience end of life. Nurses are often the first to recognise a dying patient and initiate essential care in the ED's high-pressure, intervention-focused environment. This narrative review article explores how emergency nurses can provide high-quality care at the end of life when supported by access

Emerging Viral Infections: Nursing Implications and Management Strategies.

Infectious diseases have circulated the globe since the dawn of time, and new ones are seen often. Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) are defined as a newly found or an already known infectious disease that is rapidly increasing in incidence. COVID-19 changed the theoretic risk of this to a reality. Frontline providers, particularly nurses, were at the forefront of caring for those with COVID-19. This article discusses the history of EID, how care is and should be provided to patients with infectious disease, and future work that needs to be done.

Preparing Perinatal Nurses for Obstetric OR Emergencies by Using Simulations.

A cesarean hysterectomy (CH) is an emergency procedure that can save a woman's life in the event of postpartum hemorrhaging. If the CH is anticipated, it can take place in the general OR; however, more complex patients with multiple comorbidities are undergoing cesarean deliveries, resulting in unanticipated CHs and emergent procedures occurring in the obstetric OR. Many perinatal nurses believe they are not properly trained to provide the level of perioperative care required during a CH. Perinatal nurse leaders implemented a perinatal perioperative simulation program to address this knowledge

Patient-related violence against emergency department nurses.

In a finding that reflects international experiences, nurses in Australia have been identified as the occupation at most risk of patient-related violence in the health-care sector. A search of the literature was undertaken to explore this concept, with a focus on the emergency department and triage nurses. Significant findings included the fact that nurses are subjected to verbal and physical abuse so frequently that, in many instances, it has become an accepted part of the job. This attitude, combined with the chronic under-reporting of violent incidents, perpetuates the normalization of viol

METHODS: Registered nurses members (n=3,465) of the Emergency Nurses Association participated in this cross-sectional study by completing a 69-item survey. RESULTS: Approximately 25% of respondents reported exp

Management of hypertensive emergencies: implications for the critical care nurse.

Hypertensive emergencies are characterized by acute blood pressure elevations and potential for end organ damage. The critical care nurse must understand the pathophysiology to appreciate the therapeutic management and complications associated with the devastating clinical event. Stroke, renal damage and failure, retinopathy, aortic dissection, and encephalopathy are among the sequelae of severe hypertensive episodes. Intravenous medications are the treatment of choice to lower the blood pressure without risking hypoperfusion of the brain and other vital organs.
