Chagas' disease in Latin American immigrants.

Chagas' disease is caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, a protozoan parasite that infects an estimated 10 to 12 million Latin Americans. Because infection is often lifelong, individuals from endemic areas may develop symptomatic chronic Chagas' disease years after emigrating to the United States. We report three immigrant patients from Latin America who illustrate the indeterminate phase and the symptomatic cardiac and gastrointestinal syndromes of this illness.

Immigration Crises in America: Japanese Americans in 1942, US Southern Border in 2025.

America once again has an immigration problem stoked by fear and political opportunism. This review revisits the Japanese American experience in the first half of the 20th century-not because the events are identical to the issues today but because the underlying dynamics are strikingly familiar: the rise of an Asian power perceived as a threat to U.S. global influence; the arrival of immigrants deemed "unassimilable" through racialized stereotypes; and the amplification of public anxiety by irresponsible politicians and media. In the case of the Japanese experience, the rule of law bent to po

Ethnic differences in the incidence of cancer in Norway.

Traditionally there have been differences in cancer incidence across geographic regions. When immigrants have moved from low-income to high-income countries, their incidence have changed as they have adapted to the lifestyle in the new host country. Given worldwide changes in lifestyle factors over time, we decided to examine cancer incidence in immigrant groups in Norway, a country with a recent immigration history, complete cancer registration and universal public health care. We linked immigration history for the complete population to information on cancer diagnosis from the Cancer Registr

[Social psychiatry of migrant workers (author's transl)].

A review of literature about psychic illness in migrant workers (with special reference to the situation in Europe) is presented, including the problems of incidence and prevalence, course of the illness, typical syndromes and treatment. Results concerning incidence and prevalence of psychic disease in migrant workers are contradictory and partly--for methodological reasons--of questionable quality. It cannot be take for granted, that migrant workers suffer more often from psychiatric disturbances than either of the two possible control groups: the populations of the emigration or immigration

Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening for Immigrant Entry Into the United States: A Narrative Review of Current Practices and Recommendations for Improvement.

Many immigrants coming to the United States (US) are screened for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) according to national professional agency guidelines. Some curable infections such as gonorrhea and syphilis can preclude entry to the US, whereas testing for other infections, such as chlamydia, is not required for immigration screening. We critically review the rationale for and the practice of immigration STI screening at a time when common STIs are both readily treatable and already widespread in the US and when many individuals resettling in the US migrate through irregular pathways. Clinicians' perceptions of the health status of formerly detained immigrants.

BACKGROUND: In the past decade, the U.S. immigration detention system regularly detained more than 30,000 people per day; in 2019 prior to the pandemic, the daily detention population exceeded 52,000 people. Inhumane detention conditions have been documented by internal government watchdogs, and news media and human rights groups who have observed over-crowding, poor hygiene and sanitation and poor and delayed medical care, as well as verbal, physical and sexual abuse. METHODS: This study surveyed health professionals across the United States who had provided care for immigrants who were rece

Understanding US Immigration Detention: Reaffirming Rights and Addressing Social-Structural Determinants of Health.

A crisis of mass immigration detention exists in the United States, which is home to the world's largest immigration detention system. The immigration detention system is legally classified as civil, rather than criminal, and therefore non-punitive. Yet it mimics the criminal incarceration system and holds detained individuals in punitive, prison-like conditions. Within immigration detention centers, there are increasing reports and recognition of civil and human rights abuses, including preventable in-custody deaths. In this paper, we propose understanding the health impacts of detention as a

The "Oriental" problem: trachoma and Asian immigrants in the United States, 1897-1910.

This essay examines the period between 1897 and 1910, when trachoma, a contagious eye disease, became an "Oriental" problem that justified exclusionary immigration policy against Asians entering the United States. It also investigates the ways in which the public fear and alleged threat of the eye disease destabilized and undermined the rights of Asian immigrants. Many scholars have explored the link between trachoma and southern and eastern European newcomers, in particular Jews, but they have not paid much attention to Chinese or Japanese immigrants, for whose exclusion trachoma played a sig

Mirage or oasis? Iranian immigrant nurses share their stories of working in overseas healthcare settings: a phenomenological hermeneutic study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Despite the significant increase in the emigration of Iranian nurses to other countries, there is still a lack of understanding about their experiences and outcomes within healthcare settings abroad. Therefore, this study aimed to narrate the life stories of Iranian immigrant nurses who have practiced nursing in healthcare settings overseas. METHODS: This study utilized a qualitative design and employed the hermeneutic phenomenological approach to collect and analyze data. A total of 12 in-depth and unstructured interviews were conducted with six Iranian immigrant nu

[Malaria and memory in the Veneto region of Italy].

Malaria and emigration are two terms deeply embedded in Veneto history, related to images far back in the past, unknown to younger generations. Losing one's own collective historical memory is a source of personal and cultural impoverishment and inevitably compromises one's awareness of the present, possibly leading to superficial judgements and hastily formed opinions. Such a situation is all the more serious in a geographical area, north-eastern Italy, where immigration is so abundant. In this paper the authors seek to retrieve, at least in part, this memory, especially in terms of history (

[Imported mycosis: a review of paracoccidioidomycosis].

Population migration is increasing the number of systemic mycosis cases, a condition little or not present in Metropolitan France, thus often weakly documented for medical teams. Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic mycosis geographically confined to Latin America. The causative agent is Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, a dimorphic fungus present at ground level. Discovering that the armadillo was a new host allowed documenting the ideal conditions for this fungus development. The mortality rate is currently 1.45 for one million people and the disease affects mainly farmers. The mode of infectio

[The role of population migration in the spread of opisthorchiasis from an Ob'-Irtysh invasion focus].

The first quantitative indicators of opisthorchiasis irradiation from the invasion focus at the social level are obtained. It was demonstrated that 114.000 out of 1 mln. people leaving the helminthiasis invasion focus had suffered from opisthorchiasis. Invasion irradiation may be limited by means of reduction of emigration from the area by improvement of working and living conditions and reduction of the invasion rate, which can be attained by creation of a system of immigrants' protection and activization of preventive measures and medical treatment of local population.

Psychopathology and management of hospitalized Ethiopian immigrant adolescents in Israel.

Over a period of about 12 months a large number of Ethiopian Jews emigrated to Israel under very stressful conditions. Many of these immigrants were adolescents who came on their own, leaving their families behind. Despite the culture shock involved, most have done well. Nine of these youngsters, who developed psychiatric disabilities severe enough to warrant hospitalization, were referred to us. In this paper we describe the clinical and management problems posed by these patients.

Climate change-related migration and displacement: addressing the adaptation gap.

The growing intersection between climate change and human mobility argues that migration, displacement, and immobility are increasingly shaped by both sudden-onset and slow-onset climate hazards, alongside underlying social and governance vulnerabilities. Most climate-related mobility occurs within national borders and carries considerable implications for health, livelihoods, and urban systems. Global frameworks such as the Global Compact for Migration and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change have begun to acknowledge these dynamics; however, a major adaptation gap is identified at t

[Depressive syndromes in the immigrant population].

Migrations are currently one of the most important sociocultural and political phenomena. As a rule, immigrants are in good health, although the immigration is by itself a mental health risk factor. This population shows common specific problems as adaptation processes, depressive syndromes, or other psychiatric problems. "Ulises' syndrome", depression, and dysthymia are the most common mental health conditions among unlawful non-european community immigrants cared in specific facilities. Similarly to the spanish indigenous population, anxiety disorders and readjustment disorders are the most

Latin American Children of the US Immigration Crisis: The Essential Roles that All Pediatric Health Care Professionals Must Play.

Over 26% of US children live in immigrant families. Current immigration policy has disrupted children's access to health care and social/educational services that negatively affect their wellbeing. This article provides an overview of US immigration policy and examples of immigrant advocacy efforts including clinical advocacy-assuring that medical providers are taught evidence-based immigrant health care and that children receive this care; grass roots advocacy-working with border shelters and forming national networks of pediatric providers to link children to health care; and legal/policy ad

Tuberculosis rates in migrants in low-incidence European countries, according to country of origin, reporting country and recency of immigration, 2014 to 2020.

BackgroundAs tuberculosis (TB) incidence rates decrease faster in native than migrant populations in European countries, addressing migrant health becomes increasingly important in TB programmes.AimTo inform European TB prevention and control policies, we analysed data on TB in migrants in low TB-incidence European countries (TB incidence < 10/100,000 population) during 2014-2020 by migrant origin, destination, and recent vs non-recent immigration.MethodsData on migrant TB patients were derived from the European Surveillance System (TESSy) and data on migrant populations from Eurostat or natio

Addressing social determinants of health through customization: Quality improvement, telemedicine, and care coordination to serve immigrant families.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this project was to establish a pathway for electronic medical record (EMR) customization, utilizing quality improvement methodology, to both identify and address adverse social determinants of health (SDOH) among a diverse spina bifida (SB) population. METHODS: Starting in September 2020, the four fundamental steps were to (1) facilitate an advisory committee to safeguard the standard clinical protocols, (2) characterize barriers to implementation, (3) evaluate workflow to sustain data entry capture, and (4) manage the technology platform for seamless integration.
