Topical Applications of a Novel Emollient Inhibit Inflammation in Murine Models of Acute Contact Dermatitis.

The benefits of emollients for eczematous dermatitis and psoriasis have been thought to be due to the improvements in epidermal function, including epidermal permeability barrier, stratum corneum hydration, and stratum corneum pH. We determined here whether emollient can direct inhibit cutaneous inflammation. Ear inflammation was induced by topical application of either 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) or 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB). Either 1% hydrocortisone cream or the novel emollient was applied to the right ear of the mice 45 min and 2 hours after TPA or DNFB applica

The Effect of Early Food Introduction and Skin Emollients on Pollen Sensitization: A Randomized Trial (PreventADALL) Sub-Study.

BACKGROUND: Pollen sensitization may be directed toward proteins also found in plant foods. OBJECTIVE: We explored whether early food introduction and skin emollients prevented birch and grass sensitization at age 3 years and whether the effect was mediated by skin barrier function or modified by season of birth. METHODS: In the population-based, randomized, controlled Preventing Atopic Dermatitis and Allergy in Children trial, information on allergic sensitization by age 3 years was available in 2,066 children. Newborns were randomized (1:1:1:1) to no (controls); to food (tastes of peanut,

Assessing the potential fire risk of laundered fabrics after contamination with emollients using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and chemometrics.

Since 2010, more than 50 UK fire deaths, have been reported as linked with emollients. This prompted the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to issue advice on their safer use in 2018. The advice was in response to concerns raised by the National Fire Chiefs Council, coroners' reports, and flammability tests. The test results show a significant reduction in ignition time of fabrics contaminated with paraffin-based and paraffin-free skin care product residues. The MHRA report also included advice on washing clothing and bedding at high temperatures but warned this may not

Comparison of nanoemulsion and non-emollient artificial tears on tear lipid layer thickness and symptoms.

PURPOSE: Dry eye disease (DED) is often managed with over-the-counter eye drops. This study evaluated the diurnal effects of a single drop of two ocular lubricants (nanoemulsion vs. non-emollient) on tear film lipid layer thickness (LLT) and symptoms of ocular dryness. Subjects were also assessed after 1 month of nanoemulsion eye drop use. METHODS: Part 1 was a cross-over comparison of a nanoemulsion and a non-emollient eye drop. LLT and dry eye symptoms were measured at baseline and at 15min, 1h, 2h, 4h and 6h after instillation of each drop. Part 2 was a 1-month observational study assessin

Clinical Evaluation of a Diaper Containing a Shea Butter-Based Emollient and Impact on Diapered Skin Erythema.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Skin is a baby's first line of defense against mechanical, chemical, enzymatic, and microbial insults. Preventive interventions in the diapered area are important given repetitive, episodic exposures to irritants in urine and feces. For over a century, physicians have utilized petrolatum-based emollients (PBE) prophylactically and retroactively for skin irritation in the diapered area. In this study, a diaper containing an anhydrous, shea butter-based emollient (SBE) was evaluated for its skin effects on adult and baby skin. METHODS: A 6-week, randomized, crossover, on-

Effects of a pH-Regulating Emollient Cream in Mild Atopic Dermatitis Patients with Moderate Localized Lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Increased skin pH values in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) contribute to poor antimicrobial and permeability barrier functions of the skin. In practice, the majority of topical preparations available for dry skin conditions do not provide sufficient pH and buffering capacity for maintaining optimum skin surface conditions. To address this issue, we tested a novel zinc lactobionate preparation to determine whether the regular application would lower skin surface pH, and in doing so improve the condition of lesional skin. METHODS: The assessment for local severity of AD was

A review of the safety and efficacy of benzoyl peroxide (5.3%) emollient foam in the management of truncal acne vulgaris.

This article reviews findings of studies regarding the treatment of truncal acne with benzoyl peroxide formulations and, in particular, studies utilizing a 5.3% benzoyl peroxide foam. Its formulation of micronized benzoyl peroxide particles in an emollient foam vehicle offers significant clinical and bioavailability advantages that enhance follicular penetration and skin moisturization. A key consideration for topical management of truncal acne is whether the treatment application method allows adequate skin contact time to reduce Propionibacterium acnes colony counts. The foam formulation has

Impact of topical emollient, steroids alone or combined with calcipotriol, on the immune infiltrate and clinical outcome in psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease whereby long-term disease control remains a challenge for the patients. Latest evidence suggests that combined topical treatment with steroids and vitamin D analogue foam (Calcipotriol/Betamethasone) is efficient in long-term management of the disease and reducing the number of relapses. Its effects on cellular inflammation and cytokine production remain to be explored. We set out to examine the effect of topical therapies on cellular infiltrate and cytokine profile in the lesional skin of psoriasis patients. This was a monocentric, double-blind, ran

Urea in Dermatology: A Review of its Emollient, Moisturizing, Keratolytic, Skin Barrier Enhancing and Antimicrobial Properties.

Urea is a hygroscopic molecule (capable of absorbing water) present in the epidermis as a component of the natural moisturizing factor (NMF) and is essential for the adequate hydration and integrity of the stratum corneum. Urea improves skin barrier function including antimicrobial defense by regulating gene expression in keratinocytes relevant for their differentiation and antimicrobial peptide production. It also plays a fundamental role in regulating keratinocyte proliferation. One of the first uses of urea in modern medicine was the topical treatment of wounds due to its proteolytic and an

Hygiene and emollient interventions for maintaining skin integrity in older people in hospital and residential care settings.

BACKGROUND: Ageing has a degenerative effect on the skin, leaving it more vulnerable to damage. Hygiene and emollient interventions may help maintain skin integrity in older people in hospital and residential care settings; however, at present, most care is based on "tried and tested" practice, rather than on evidence. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of hygiene and emollient interventions for maintaining skin integrity in older people in hospital and residential care settings. The multifunctionality of 10% sodium sulfacetamide, 5% sulfur emollient foam in the treatment of inflammatory facial dermatoses.

Prior to 1962, some of the most versatile drugs in dermatology were approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) solely on the basis of safety. One of these is the combination 10% sodium sulfacetamide and 5% sulfur. Sodium sulfacetamide possesses anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties while sulfur is a nonspecific antibacterial and antifungal. A new emollient foam formulation of 10% sodium sulfacetamide and 5% sulfur allows a thinner application film and leaves behind no residue on hair bearing or non-hair bearing skin. The sulfur smell is also more quickly dissipated with r

Cutting oil dermatitis on guinea pig skin. (II). Emollient creams and cutting oil dermatitis.

The effect of repeated exposure of cutting oil on 8 guinea pigs' skin was evaluated by visual scoring for erythema and skin water vapour loss (SVL) measurement over a 6-week period. The visual scores (measuring severity of erythema) and SVL values were significantly higher on skin treated with cutting oils (positive control) compared to untreated skin (negative control) throughout the study period. The scores and SVL values returned to near-baseline values when cutting oil application was stopped. In addition, the effect of 2 "after-work" emollient creams on 8 guinea pigs' skin repeatedly trea
