Comparing predictors of employment in Individual Placement and Support: A longitudinal analysis.

Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is an evidence-based model of supported employment for people with serious mental illness. We assessed the effects and relative contributions of predictors of employment among IPS recipients using measures of baseline client characteristics, local economic context, and IPS fidelity. A recent work history, less time on the Social Security rolls, greater cognitive functioning, and a lower local unemployment rate were associated with greater probability of employment. The ability of the model to discriminate between outcomes was limited, and substantial impr

Employers' perceptions of supporting an employee's work reintegration following stroke.

PURPOSE: A significant proportion of stroke survivors are of working age. While employers play a pivotal role in facilitating work reintegration, their perspectives remain unknown. This study aimed to explore employers' experiences and perspectives on supporting their employees in returning to work after stroke. METHODS: Qualitative descriptive approach. Participants were employers of stroke survivors who had received vocational rehabilitation, and were known to receive support from the clinical team. Semi-structured interviews were conducted online and data were examined using reflexive them

Health and well-being of homeless veterans participating in transitional and supported employment: Six-month outcomes.

Supported employment, specifically individual placement and support (IPS), improves competitive employment (CE) rates for individuals with serious mental illness, but has not shown greater improvement in non-vocational outcomes than other rehabilitation approaches. The Department of Veterans Affairs offers two types of vocational services, IPS and transitional work experience (TWE), but no study has compared the effectiveness of these approaches. This secondary analysis of data from a study of homeless veterans compared 6 mo improvement in diverse outcomes for five employment patterns: never w

Predictors of work outcomes following supported employment in veterans with a history of traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: The effects of traumatic brain injury (TBI) on return to work have been the focus of many clinical studies in recent years. Veterans with a history of TBI may be at increased risk of unemployment. OBJECTIVE: We sought to understand predictors of work outcomes for Veterans with a history of TBI who received evidence-based supported employment. METHODS: Fifty unemployed Veterans with a history of mild-to-moderate TBI and current neuropsychological impairment participated in a 12-month supported employment intervention. Demographic data and baseline assessments of neuropsychological

Compensatory cognitive training for people with severe mental illnesses in supported employment: A randomized controlled trial.

Treatments for cognitive and functional impairments associated with severe mental illnesses are urgently needed. We tested a 12-week, manualized, Compensatory Cognitive Training (CCT) intervention targeting prospective memory, attention, learning/memory, and executive functioning in the context of supported employment for people with severe mental illnesses who were seeking work. 153 unemployed, work-seeking outpatients with schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder (n=58), bipolar disorder (n=37), or major depression (n=58) were randomized to receive supported employment plus CCT or enhanced sup

Toward the development of a supported employment program for individuals with high-functioning autism in Germany.

Human-human interactions are of central relevance for the success in professional and occupational environments, which also substantially influence quality of life. This is especially true in the case of individuals with high-functioning autism (HFA), who experience deficits in social cognition that often lead to social exclusion and unemployment. Despite good education and high motivation, individuals with HFA do not reach employment rates that are substantially higher than 50 %. This is an alarmingly high rate of unemployment considering that the United Nations have recently emphasized the i

Methods of a multisite randomized clinical trial of supported employment among veterans with spinal cord injury.

This article compares the methods of a randomized multisite clinical trial of evidence-based supported employment with conventional vocational rehabilitation among veterans with spinal cord injury (SCI). The primary hypothesis is that, compared with conventional vocational rehabilitation (i.e., standard care), evidence-based supported employment will significantly improve competitive employment outcomes and general rehabilitation outcomes. The secondary hypothesis is that evidence-based supported employment in SCI will be more cost-effective than standard care. The current article describes th

Results of a multisite randomized trial of supported employment interventions for individuals with severe mental illness.

CONTEXT: National probability surveys indicate that most individuals with schizophrenia and other severe mental illnesses are not employed. This multisite study tested the effectiveness of supported employment (SE) models combining clinical and vocational rehabilitation services to establish competitive employment. METHODS: We randomly assigned 1273 outpatients with severe mental illness from 7 states in the United States to an experimental SE program or to a comparison or a services-as-usual condition, with follow-up for 24 months. Participants were interviewed semiannually, paid employment

A prospective examination of the impact of a supported employment program and employment on health-related quality of life, handicap, and disability among Veterans with SCI.

PURPOSES: To investigate impact of participation in a supported employment program and impact of employment itself on health-related quality of life (HRQOL), disability, and handicap among Veterans with spinal cord injury (SCI). METHODS: We used a prospective, randomized, controlled, multi-site trial of supported employment (SE) versus treatment as usual (TAU) for vocational issues. Subjects were 157 Veterans with SCI who received either SE or TAU for vocational issues. Outcomes were examined in terms of type of vocational treatment received and whether competitive employment was obtained. Ou

Are individuals with severe mental retardation and multiple disabilities cost-efficient to serve via supported employment programs?

The relations between cost-efficiency (from the perspective of worker, taxpayer, and society) and personal characteristics of supported employees (i.e., IQ, level of mental retardation, multiple disabilities, gender, ethnicity, and age) were examined. Results suggest that when sheltered workshops were used as alternative placements, supported employees with high IQs benefited more from employment within the community than did supported employees with lower IQs. From society's perspective, African American and male supported employees were more cost-efficient than were European American and fem

Work re-entry and functioning in people with major depression: a longitudinal study of supported employment participants.

BACKGROUND: People with major depression are affected by impaired daily functioning and non-participation in the workforce. At the same time, employment has been associated with improved mental health outcomes. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between work re-entry and subsequent functioning and depressive symptoms. METHODS: The present observational study included a sample of 129 participants of a supported employment intervention project in Germany diagnosed with depressive disorders. Participants were assessed before the start of the intervention (baseline) and after t

Supported employment coaches' difficulties and facilitators with clients diagnosed with personality versus other disorders: A qualitative study.

AIM: People with severe mental illnesses (SMI) face different occupational challenges than those diagnosed with personality disorders (PD). Supported employment (SE) has been validated for SMI patients but its effectiveness for individuals with PD remains unclear, and the reasons for this potential difference have not been explored. This study aimed to identify differences in SE practice for clients with SMI and those with PD. METHODS: Six SE job coaches were interviewed about their experiences. A thematic analysis was run. RESULTS: More difficulties and facilitators were mentioned regarding

Implementing evidence-based practices in supported employment on the Gold Coast for people with severe mental illness.

AIM: The aim of this project was to evaluate program outcomes following the implementation of an evidence-based approach to supported employment on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. METHOD: A prospective observational design was used to evaluate employment outcomes and fidelity to the evidence-based principles and practices of a specialised form of supported employment. The cohort was defined as all those (n = 114) that entered the program at each of three sites within a 21-month period. Each participant was followed up for a minimum of six months.
