Unraveling driving regimes for destabilizing concentrated emulsions within microchannels.

Coalescence is the most widely demonstrated mechanism for destabilizing emulsion droplets in microfluidic chambers. However, we find that depending on the channel wall surface functionalization, surface zeta potential, type of surfactant, characteristics of the oil as a dispersed phase, or even the presence of externally-induced stress, other different destabilization mechanisms can occur in subtle ways. In general, we observe four regimes leading to destabilization of concentrated emulsions: (i) coalescence, (ii) emulsion bursts, (iii) a combination of the two first mechanisms, attributed to

Hypertriglyceridaemia in extremely preterm infants receiving parenteral lipid emulsions.

BACKGROUND: Lipid emulsions (LE) are routinely administered as part of parenteral nutrition in neonates. There is a wide variation in clinical practice of plasma triglyceride monitoring during LE therapy. Our aim was to evaluate the incidence of hypertriglyceridaemia (Plasma triglyceride > 2.8 mmol/L) and its association with mortality and major morbidities in extremely preterm infants on parenteral nutrition. METHODS: A retrospective review of 195 infants < 29 weeks gestation. Lipid emulsion was commenced at 1 g/kg/day soon after birth and increased by 1 g/kg daily up to 3 g/kg/day and conti

Intravenous lipid emulsions in pediatric patients with intestinal failure.

UNLABELLED: The incidence of cholestatic liver disease (CLD) in pediatric patients suffering intestinal failure (IF) is not well established. Due to persistent portal inflammation, about 20% of these patients will progress to end-stage intestinal failure associated liver disease (IFALD) leading to liver transplant or death. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Premature babies as well as infants with short bowel syndrome (SBS) and repeated sepsis (catheter or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth related) are at risk of developing CLD. Clinical data in SBS infants focused on intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) as

Role of parenteral lipid emulsions in the preterm infant.

Parenteral nutrition (PN) is necessary for infants unable to receive adequate calories enterally due to prematurity, decreased bowel length, or functional intestinal disorders. While PN can be life saving, its use is associated with significant risks of sepsis from catheter-associated infections and progressive liver dysfunction from prolonged use. The preterm infant population is at highest risk for these complications due to the presence of multiple comorbidities and immaturity of the biliary system. Strong data has implicated parenteral lipids in the multifactorial pathogenesis of PN-associ

Hexachlorophene emulsions and antiseptic skin care of newborn infants.

This paper reviews 81,756 live births and 858 infant deaths occurring during the years 1959 to 1969. Sixty-three instances of central nervous system vacuolation are reported. Prematurity is shown to be a necessary prerequisite for central nervous system vacuolation to occur during routine antiseptic skin care of newborn infants with 3% hexachlorophene emulsions. Hyperbilirubinaemia is a contributory factor in such premature infants. Long-term clinical follow-up studies show that, should central nervous system vacuolation occur in premature infants, there is no resultant detriment to their imme

The stabilization of serum lipid emulsions by serum phospholipids.

Clarity of high lipid sera is closely correlated with elevated proportions of serum phospholipids, and lipemia (milkiness) with low proportions of phospholipids. Clear high lipid sera occur uniquely in obstructive jaundice, both intra- and extrahepatic in origin. Destruction of the polar nature of serum "lecithin" by enzymatic hydrolysis, using Cl. welchii lecithinase, results in a degree of lipemia which is linearly proportional to total lipid content in clear or lipemic high lipid or normal lipid sera. Even in grossly lipemic sera, a significant proportion of the serum lipids is masked in pa

Perspectives in the stability of emulsion explosive.

This review explores the stability of emulsion explosive, through summarizing its instability reason, stability mechanism, affecting factors, improvement ways and evaluation methods. The emulsion explosive can be recognized as highly concentrated emulsion due to the volume fraction of dispersed phase exceed 74%. The polydispersity, deformation of compassed droplets and the high content of AN in dispersed phase should be considered for the stability of emulsion explosive. The coalescence is one of the important factor for the instability of emulsion explosive as the droplets bound to each other

Comparative review of colloidal delivery strategies for hydrophobic bioactives: Pickering emulsions, emulsion gels, and nanogels.

Hydrophobic bioactives (e.g., curcumin, carotenoids, polyphenols) offer substantial health benefits but are fundamentally limited by poor water solubility, environmental instability, and low gastrointestinal bioavailability. While colloidal delivery systems help overcome these barriers, current research typically isolates and optimizes individual platforms, neglecting the broader conflict between structural stability and digestive bioaccessibility. This review systematically compares three hierarchical spatial confinement strategies-two-dimensional Pickering emulsions (PEs), three-dimensional

Nanocellulose-stabilized Pickering emulsions: Mechanisms, fabrication, and multifunctional applications.

Pickering emulsions (PEs), which are emulsions stabilized by solid particles, exhibit excellent stability, making them suitable for preparing functional materials. Solid particles, whether derived from natural or synthetic sources, play a critical role in ensuring the stability and functionality of emulsions. Among the particle stabilizers, nanocellulose has attracted considerable attention owing to its tunable amphiphilicity, excellent mechanical strength, and inherent chemical stability. Consequently, nanocellulose-based PEs are widely investigated for applications in food, energy storage, a

Perfluorohexane Emulsions Induce Macrophage-Stimulating Effects through iNOS Expression.

Despite advances in cancer immunotherapy, efficacy has been limited to a subset of patients, highlighting the need for continued development of innovative therapeutic approaches. Perfluorocarbon-filled (PFC) particles, due to unique physicochemical properties, biological stability, and quantifiability as 19F-MRI tracers, have been intensely investigated as in vivo macrophage imaging agents. Despite this, little is known about the effect of PFC particle uptake on macrophage behavior. Here, phospholipid-stabilized perfluorohexane (PFH) nanodroplets (NDs) were used to treat bone-marrow-derived ma

Formation mechanism and ultrasound-assisted preparation of puerarin emulsions.

Combining experimental and computational methods, this study elucidated puerarin's behavior at oil/water interfaces, culminating in the formulation of puerarin-based emulsions. Findings revealed that puerarin naturally aggregated at the interface, resulting in decreased interfacial tension and increased interfacial thickness. Moreover, the glycoside and benzene ring of puerarin showed a propensity to interact with H2O and oil, respectively. The ultrasound-assisted preparation of puerarin emulsions depended critically on three key parameters: puerarin concentration (c), ultrasonic time (t), and

Analysis of phospholipids and triacylglycerols in intravenous lipid emulsions.

Intravenous lipid emulsions (ILEs) are used for parenteral nutrition, providing a vital source of essential fatty acids and concentrated energy for patients who are unable to absorb nutrients via the digestive track. They are commonly used to treat local and non-local anesthetic toxicity, and lipophilic drug overdose. ILE are composed of natural lipids, and the composition of these natural lipids can be varied based on their source. The lipids are susceptible to hydrolytic degradation with time, resulting various lipid degradation products such as Lysophosphatidylcholines (LPs), affecting the

Microencapsulation of betanin in monodisperse W/O/W emulsions.

Betanin is the main pigment of the food color beetroot red (E162). Due to the fair heat and light stability of E162, this pigment is mainly used in minimally processed packaged food products. Encapsulation increases the stability of betanin, but detailing on the effect of different sources of betanin on the properties and stability of multiple emulsions are scarce. Here we describe the encapsulation of E162, spray-dried beetroot juice and betanin in a monodisperse food-grade water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) emulsions by using microchannel emulsification. We compare the tinctorial strength of the

Poly(isobutylene) nanoparticles via cationic polymerization in nonaqueous emulsions.

The preparation of poly(isobutylene) (PIB) nanoparticles via cationic emulsion polymerization is presented. As a requirement, an oil-in-perfluoroalkane nonaqueous emulsion is developed, which is inert under the carbocationic polymerization conditions. To stabilize the dichloromethane/hexane droplets in the fluorinated, continuous phase, an amphiphilic block copolymer emulsifier is prepared containing PIB and 1H,1H-perfluoroalkylated poly(pentafluorostyrene) blocks. This system allows for the polymerization of isobutylene with number-average molecular weights (Mn) up to 27,000 g mol(-1). The pa

Factors that affect Pickering emulsions stabilized by graphene oxide.

Stable Pickering emulsions were prepared using only graphene oxide (GO) as a stabilizer, and the effects of the type of oil, the sonication time, the GO concentration, the oil/water ratio, and the pH value on the stability, type, and morphology of these emulsions were investigated. In addition, the effects of salt and the extent of GO reduction on emulsion formation and stability were studied and discussed. The average droplet size decreased with sonication time and with GO concentration, and the emulsions tended to achieve good stability at intermediate oil/water ratios and at low pH values.

Water-in-trichloroethylene emulsions stabilized by uniform carbon microspheres.

Uniform hard carbon spheres (HCS), synthesized by the hydrothermal decomposition of sucrose followed by pyrolysis, are effective at stabilizing water-in-trichloroethylene (TCE) emulsions. The irreversible adsorption of carbon particles at the TCE-water interface resulting in the formation of a monolayer around the water droplet in the emulsion phase is identified as the key reason for emulsion stability. Cryogenic scanning electron microscopy was used to image the assembly of carbon particles clearly at the TCE-water interface and the formation of bilayers in regions of droplet-droplet contact

Effect of intravenous lipid emulsions on hepatic cholesterol metabolism.

BACKGROUND: Total parenteral nutrition offers the chance of survival to children who have had extensive gut resections or gut failure. However, in infants it is often associated with serious complications including cholestatic liver disease. The causes of these complications remain unclear, although it has been suggested that the lipid emulsions used in total parenteral nutrition may be responsible. METHODS: An in vitro system was developed to study the effect of lipid emulsions on hepatic cholesterol metabolism using cultured hepatocytes. RESULTS: Incubations of Hep G2 cells with medium con
