BACKGROUND: A hospital-based prospective cross-sectional study was conducted in children aged 1 month-14 years to identify the proportion of viral encephalitis due to Japanese encephalitis (JE) and compare the clinico-laboratory profile and outcome of JE with that of other viral encephalitis (non-JE).
METHODS: All probable cases of viral encephalitis on clinical and laboratory evaluation were confirmed as JE on anti-JE IgM in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and/or serum. Patients not having anti-JE IgM in CSF and/or serum were diagnosed as having non-JE.
RESULTS: Of 94 cases, 58 were JE and 36 non

BACKGROUND: Many studies have shown that autoimmune encephalitis (AE) can occur after viral encephalitis. However, no reports have focused on the interval between viral infection peaks and probable AE peaks. OBJECTIVES: To assess the possibility that viral infection and neuronal autoantibodies are concomitantly present within a 72-hour interval in patients diagnosed with encephalitis. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed encephalitis patients admitted to our institution between 2018 and 2025. The inclusion criteria were as follows: the interval from the initial onset of symptoms to serum and c

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Viral encephalitis is a potentially devastating condition of cerebral inflammation manifest as a combination of fever, altered mentation, and sometimes focal neurological signs and seizures. In this review we explore the new developments in understanding of the epidemiology, pathogenesis and treatment options.
RECENT FINDINGS: The WHO technical brief is a landmark document which sets the stage for the advancement of the surveillance, prevention and management of viral encephalitis. Adjunctive dexamethasone given in herpes simplex virus encephalitis is not associated with a

Viral encephalitis is still very prominent around the world, and traditional antiviral therapies still have shortcomings. Some patients cannot get effective relief or suffer from serious sequelae. At present, people are studying the role of the innate immune system in viral encephalitis. Microglia, as resident cells of the central nervous system (CNS), can respond quickly to various CNS injuries including trauma, ischemia, and infection and maintain the homeostasis of CNS, but this response is not always good; sometimes, it will exacerbate damage. Studies have shown that microglia also act as

Viral infections of the central nervous system cause frequent hospitalization. The pathogenesis of viral encephalitis involves both the direct action of invading pathogens and the damage generated by the inflammatory reaction they trigger. The type of signs and symptoms presented by the patient depends on the severity and location of the ongoing inflammatory process. Most of the viral encephalitides are characterized by an acute development, fever, variable alterations in consciousness (confusion, lethargy, even coma), seizures (focal and generalized) and focal neurologic signs. The specific d

Monocytes are a heterogeneous population of bone marrow-derived cells that are recruited to sites of infection and inflammation in many models of human diseases, including those of the central nervous system (CNS). Ly6Chi/CCR2(hi) inflammatory monocytes have been identified as the circulating precursors of brain macrophages, dendritic cells and arguably microglia in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis; Alzheimer's disease; stroke; and more recently in CNS infection caused by Herpes simplex virus, murine hepatitis virus, Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus, Japanese encephalitis viru

The laboratory confirmation of twelve clinically diagnosed cases of aseptic meningitis and encephalitis is described. Among three cases of aseptic meningitis one was due to mumps in a 14-month infant and the other two attributable to Cocksackie B-1. Herpes virus encephalitis due to HSV-1 was conclusively identified by IF monoclonal test from brain biopsy in tissue culture, and a further four cases also of HSV-1 encephalitis by virus isolation from CSF and presence of significant levels of herpes virus antibody in CSF and serum. Measles encephalitis was identified in four pediatric patients wit

Both viral meningitis and encephalitis in infants and children give clinical features of various severity. The mechanism of viral encephalitis varies from CNS cellular destruction, immune or oedematous process. The clinical and EEG features of herpes encephalitis in the child are usually well recognizable. CSF characteristics are important for differential diagnosis. Management therapy includes anti-oedema treatment, prevention or cure of seizures. Passive immunisation against rubella, rubeola and measles is the best prevention therapy for post-infectious encephalitis. Herpes encephalitis prog

In our case report, we are presenting a 72 years old male patient. The patient's symptoms were fever, dizziness, general weakness at the time of admission. The laboratory and CSF tests revealed central nervous system inflammation. West Nile virus was identified from the cerebrospinal fluid. After the symptoms of infection and during supporting treatment, severe, progressing hyponatremia evolved with unknown pathology. According to previous investigations and our diagnostic and therapeutic algorithm cerebral salt wasting syndrome identified as occasion.

BACKGROUND: Uveal effusion is a rare disease that is characterized by exudative detachment of the ciliary body and choroid. Herein, we report a rare case of uveal effusion associated with viral encephalitis, which resolved following the treatment of the viral encephalitis and administration of corticosteroids.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old man who was hospitalized for viral encephalitis was referred to our clinic. He had been treated for herpes zoster ophthalmicus in his left eye 3 weeks previously. Choroidal detachment and uveal effusion between the ciliary body and sclera were observed.

We present a case of a 60-year-old Caucasian man recently returned from Angola, where he had been successfully treated for a severe (non-cerebral) falciparum malaria infection. He was presented to the emergency room, with a subacute onset encephalopathy, ataxia and a generalised tonic-clonic seizure. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis revealed lymphocytic pleocytosis (123 cells/µL) and hyperproteinorrhachia (188 mg/dL). Brain MRI and EEG were unremarkable. CSF PCR testing for neurotropic viruses was negative as were CSF and blood cultures. The patient was treated with ceftriaxone and acyclovir

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a chronic infection of the central nervous system associated with the presence of mutant measles virus in the brain. It presents as a progressive, usually fatal disease. The diagnosis is based on clinical criteria and an elevated titer of measles antibodies in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Electroencephalography and imaging studies provide supportive laboratory data. A brain biopsy is indicated only when CSF serology is negative or equivocal in a suspected case to assess the presence of inclusion bodies, measles virus antigens, or viral RNA. Among

Herpetic encephalitis (HSE) is one of the most severe infections of Central Nervous System (CNS). If not treated, it results in patient's death in 70% cases, although in properly treated cases the mortality rate is 30%. The most endangered group are patients with immunosuppression, including pregnant women and women in the peripartum period. We present a case of a young woman in puerperium period, who developed herpetic encephalitis. Despite proper treatment patient required long term hospitalization in ICU, where she was placed in pharmacological coma. Despite severe course of the disease no
