Hepatocrinology: New Conceptual Frameworks Linking Endocrine Disorders to Chronic Liver Pathology.

Hepatocrinology is an emerging interdisciplinary field that examines the bidirectional interactions between the liver and the endocrine system, emphasizing how hepatic dysfunction influences hormonal regulation and how endocrine disorders, in turn, shape liver metabolism, inflammation, and disease progression. This review summarizes current theoretical frameworks, including hepato-endocrine axes, hepatokine signaling, and multi-organ communication models, highlighting the liver's role as a central endocrine hub. Key hepatic hormones, transport proteins, and hepatokines such as fetuin-A, fibrob

Autophagy in the endocrine glands.

Autophagy is an important cellular process involving the degradation of intracellular components. Its regulation is complex and while there are many methods available, there is currently no single effective way of detecting and monitoring autophagy. It has several cellular functions that are conserved throughout the body, as well as a variety of different physiological roles depending on the context of its occurrence in the body. Autophagy is also involved in the pathology of a wide range of diseases. Within the endocrine system, autophagy has both its traditional conserved functions and speci

Endocrine pathology: past, present and future.

Endocrine pathology is the subspecialty of diagnostic pathology which deals with the diagnosis and characterisation of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases of the endocrine system. This relatively young subspecialty was initially focused mainly on thyroid and parathyroid pathology, with some participants also involved in studies of the pituitary, the endocrine pancreas, and the adrenal glands. However, the endocrine system involves much more than these traditional endocrine organs and the discipline has grown to encompass lesions of the dispersed neuroendocrine cells, including neuroendocrin

Phosphomannomutase 2-congenital disorder of glycosylation: exploring the role of N-glycosylation on the endocrine axes.

Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) are a heterogeneous group of inborn errors of metabolism caused by impaired protein glycosylation. Among these, PMM2-CDG, caused by defective phosphomannomutase 2 activity and affecting protein N-glycosylation, is the most prevalent. As glycoproteins are involved in almost every physiological process, the clinical manifestations in PMM2-CDG are diverse and multisystemic. In the endocrine system, glycoproteins are present in every axis, acting as hormones, prohormones, receptors, enzymes, and transport proteins. Hypoglycosylation can alter hormonal fu

Can xenobiotics contribute to the increase in the incidence of endocrine diseases by inducing autoimmune processes?

In recent decades, there has been an increase in the incidence of both autoimmune and endocrine diseases, mainly in industrialized countries and may be partly due to human exposure to increasing levels of environmental pollutants. Research shows that environmental pollutants, specifically endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), adversely affect gonadal and thyroid function and are linked to type 1 diabetes development. Current data illustrates that the immune system is also a target of EDCs, including the possible exacerbation of autoimmune processes, which are the causes of many endocrine dise

The endocrine effects of nicotine and cigarette smoke.

With a current prevalence of approximately 20%, smoking continues to impact negatively upon health. Tobacco or nicotine use influences the endocrine system, with important clinical implications. In this review we critically evaluate the literature concerning the impact of nicotine as well as tobacco use on several parameters of the endocrine system and on glucose and lipid homeostasis. Emphasis is on the effect of smoking on diabetes mellitus and obesity and the consequences of smoking cessation on these disorders. Understanding the effects of nicotine and cigarettes on the endocrine system an

Endocrine tumors as part of inherited tumor syndromes.

The endocrine system is an embryological diverse system consisted of a variety of glands, such as pituitary, parathyroid, thyroid, adrenal, endocrine pancreas, and the diffuse neuroendocrine system. Endocrine tumor can be presented as a sporadic event, or as part of an inherited tumor syndrome. During the past century, inherited tumor syndromes have emerged as an important group of diseases. With the growing knowledge of each inherited tumor syndrome in the molecular genetic level, many changes in clinical management have occurred. This review focuses on the endocrine tumors involving the pitu

Dynamic Tests in Pituitary Endocrinology: Pitfalls in Interpretation during Aging.

Aging and age-related diseases represent hot topics of current research. Progressive damage in morphology and function of cells and tissue characterizes the normal process of aging that is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. The ability of each individual to adapt to these stressors defines the type of aging and the onset of age-related diseases (i.e., metabolic syndrome, inflammatory disorders, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases). The endocrine system plays a critical role in this process because of its complex relationships with brain, immune system, and skeletal muscle

Biological functions and potential therapeutic applications of huntingtin-associated protein 1: progress and prospects.

Huntington disease (HD) is a single-gene autosomal dominant inherited neurodegenerative disease caused by a polyglutamine expansion of the protein huntingtin (HTT). Huntingtin-associated protein 1 (HAP1) is the first protein identified as an interacting partner of huntingtin, which is directly associated with HD. HAP1 is mainly expressed in the nervous system and is also found in the endocrine system and digestive system, and then involves in the occurrence of the related endocrine diseases, digestive system diseases, and cancer. Understanding the function of HAP1 could help elucidate the path
