Effects of flow and resistive training on respiratory muscle endurance and strength.

This study was conducted to ascertain whether resistive or flow type training would better improve both strength and endurance in the respiratory muscles of healthy subjects. Subjects performed a battery of respiratory strength and endurance tests before and after training, which consisted of either control, cycling exercise (E), inspiratory loading (IL), expiratory loading (EL), or hyperventilation (H) training for 4 weeks. Maximal sustained ventilation increased after training in the E and H groups. Both IL and H improved inspiratory fatigue resistance. IL improved maximal inspiratory pressu

Influence of the breathing pattern on the pulmonary function of endurance-trained athletes.

Proper functioning of the respiratory system is one of the most important determinants of human health. According to current knowledge, the diaphragmatic breathing pattern seems to be the most favourable. However, recent reports indicate that athletes often have dysfunctional breathing patterns, which may be associated with an increased risk of musculoskeletal injuries. The influence of the type of breathing pattern on the mechanical airways in athletes has not been investigated. The aim of the present study was to determine the characteristics and relationships between breathing patterns and

Enhanced endothelium-dependent vasodilation in older endurance-trained men.

We hypothesized that abnormal endothelium-dependent vasodilation (EDD) found in older otherwise healthy subjects can be attenuated with long-term endurance training. Ten endurance-trained men, 68.5 +/- 2.3 yr old, and 10 healthy sedentary men, 64.7 +/- 1.4 yr old, were studied. Aerobic exercise capacity (VO(2 max)), fasting plasma cholesterol, insulin, and homocysteine concentrations were measured. Master athletes had higher VO(2 max) (42 +/- 2.3 vs. 27 +/- 1.4 ml. kg(-1). min(-1), P < 0.001), slightly higher total cholesterol (226 +/- 8 vs. 199 +/- 8 mg/dl, P = 0.05), similar insulin, and hig

The influence of endurance training on the transient haemodynamic response to orthostatic manoeuvre.

Several investigations demonstrated that aerobic fitness is associated with a tendency towards orthostatic hypotension whereas other reports did not show any differences in cardiovascular adjustment to orthostatic challenges between endurance trained and sedentary subjects. In the present work, the time course of changes in heart rate (HR), systolic time intervals (STI), stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO) and blood pressure was studied during 8 minutes following standing up from supine position in 7 healthy volunteers before and after 10 weeks of endurance training on bicycle ergometer. Comparison of two lower-body modes of endurance training on lower-body strength development while concurrently training.

The most recent American College of Sports Medicine (1998) recommendations for quantity and quality of exercise includes both resistance and endurance exercise components. Skeletal muscle adaptations to resistance-only and endurance-only programs may be different and possibly antagonistic when both types of training are imposed concurrently. The present study examined the effect of two different modes of lower-body endurance exercise (i.e., cycle ergometry and incline treadmill walking) on lower-body strength development with concurrent resistance training designed to improve lower-body streng

Combined Endurance and Strength or Only Endurance Training? Effects of Training Mode on Neuromuscular Characteristics and Functional Abilities in Obese Adolescent Girls Enrolled in a Weight-Reduction Program.

The aim of the present study was to examine whether combining strength and endurance training would promote better improvements in neuromuscular characteristics and functional abilities than endurance training alone in obese adolescent girls enrolled in a weight-reduction program. Twenty-four obese adolescent girls (12-15 years) volunteered to participate in a 9-month training program. Participants were allocated into two groups following either (i) combined training (endurance + strength; E+ST) or (ii) endurance training (ET) program. Absolute and specific maximal torque, muscle size, and max

Living high-training low increases hypoxic ventilatory response of well-trained endurance athletes.

This study determined whether "living high-training low" (LHTL)-simulated altitude exposure increased the hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR) in well-trained endurance athletes. Thirty-three cyclists/triathletes were divided into three groups: 20 consecutive nights of hypoxic exposure (LHTLc, n = 12), 20 nights of intermittent hypoxic exposure (four 5-night blocks of hypoxia, each interspersed with 2 nights of normoxia, LHTLi, n = 10), or control (Con, n = 11). LHTLc and LHTLi slept 8-10 h/day overnight in normobaric hypoxia (approximately 2,650 m); Con slept under ambient conditions (600 m). R

Concurrent Strength and Endurance Training: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis on the Impact of Sex and Training Status.

BACKGROUND: Many sports require maximal strength and endurance performance. Concurrent strength and endurance training can lead to suboptimal training adaptations. However, how adaptations differ between males and females is currently unknown. Additionally, current training status may affect training adaptations. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess sex-specific differences in adaptations in strength, power, muscle hypertrophy, and maximal oxygen consumption ( V ˙ O2max) to concurrent strength and endurance training in healthy adults. Second, we investigated how training adaptations are influenced

Protein requirements may be lower on a training compared to rest day but are not influenced by moderate training volumes in endurance trained males.

The impact of training volume on protein requirements in endurance trained males was investigated with indicator amino acid oxidation (IAAO) methodology on a recovery day (REST) or after a 10 or 20 km run while consuming a single suboptimal protein intake (0.93 g/kg/day). Phenylalanine excretion (F13CO2; inverse proxy for whole body protein synthesis) was greatest and phenylalanine net balance was lowest on REST compared to post-exercise recovery with no difference between training volumes. Single point F13CO2 was indistinguishable from past IAAO studies using multiple protein intakes. Our res

Developing negative split pacing in endurance athletes: practical guidelines and training models.

Negative split pacing-finishing the second half of a race faster than the first-is a hallmark of elite endurance performance and a key indicator of physiological control, fatigue resistance, and strategic pacing literacy. Rather than being an inherent talent, it represents a trainable skill integrating physiological, cognitive, and behavioral regulation. This mini review synthesizes evidence from performance analyses, physiological studies, and coaching practice to outline how negative split capacity can be systematically developed. We summarize training foundations, mesocycle design, and moni

Endurance training enhances skeletal muscle mitochondrial respiration by promoting MOTS-c secretion.

The mitochondrial open reading frame of 12S rRNA-c (MOTS-c) is a biologically active mitochondria-derived peptide. However, the relationship between MOTS-c, skeletal muscle mitochondrial function, and endurance exercise adaptations is unknown. Here, we tested indices such as maximal oxygen uptake and serum MOTS-c levels in marathon runners and sedentary subjects. In addition, we tested aerobic exercise capacity, skeletal muscle mitochondrial respiration rate, and serum MOTS-c levels in mice subjected to long-term endurance training groups and sedentary groups. Our results indicated a close ass

Endurance training-induced cardiac remodeling in a guinea pig athlete's heart model.

Besides the health benefits of regular exercise, high-level training-above an optimal level-may have adverse effects. In this study, we investigated the effects of long-term vigorous training and its potentially detrimental structural-functional changes in a small animal athlete's heart model. Thirty-eight 4-month-old male guinea pigs were randomized into sedentary and exercised groups. The latter underwent a 15-week-long endurance-training program. To investigate the effects of the intense long-term exercise, in vivo (echocardiography, electrocardiography), ex vivo, and in vitro (histopatholo

Endurance training of respiratory muscles improves cycling performance in fit young cyclists.

BACKGROUND: Whether or not isolated endurance training of the respiratory muscles improves whole-body endurance exercise performance is controversial, with some studies reporting enhancements of 50% or more, and others reporting no change. Twenty fit (VO2 max 56.0 ml/kg/min), experienced cyclists were randomly assigned to three groups. The experimental group (n = 10) trained their respiratory muscles via 20, 45 min sessions of hyperpnea. The placebo group (n = 4) underwent "sham" training (20, 5 min sessions), and the control group (n = 6) did no training. RESULTS: After training, the experim
