Inhalation anesthesia first with halothane followed by enflurane relieved a patient with status asthmaticus who was refractory to conventional therapy including mechanical ventilation. After 13 days of anesthesia while on mechanical ventilation and employing nondepolarizing muscle relaxants, significant neuromuscular impairment, manifested by tetraplegia and sensory disturbance, developed. Anesthesia was discontinued on day 14, and the patient was weaned from mechanical ventilation on day 16. Over the next two months, the neuromuscular impairment markedly improved. Halothane was associated wit

The characteristics of the neuromuscular block produced by prolonged succinylcholine infusion were compared in 40 patients anaesthetized with either nitrous oxide with enflurane (1-2 per cent inspired) or nitrous oxide and fentanyl. Neuromuscular transmission was monitored using train-of-four stimulation and the infusion rate was adjusted to keep the first twitch at 10-15 per cent of its control value. Initially, all patients, exhibited a depolarizing-type block all twitches of the train-of-four being roughly the same size, and the infusion rates were similar in the enflurane (54 microgram X k

In order to estimate primary action of anesthetic agents on the central neural mechanisms of respiratory control and the ventilatory response to an acute increased ETCO2, the effect of sevoflurane (SEV), isoflurane (ISO) or enflurane (ENF) on the pattern of phrenic nerve discharge (Phr.N.A.) was studied in adult rabbits which had been vagotomized, paralyzed and ventilated artificially with 100% oxygen. Throughout the course of experiment, ETCO2 and the rectal temperature of animals were maintained around physiological values. Depressant effects of these anesthetics on Phr. N.A. which consisted

Cardiovascular effects of high dose opioid together with low dose inhalant were compared with inhalant alone to determine whether opioid/inhalant techniques were less depressant on the cardiovascular system. The effects of positive pressure ventilation and increasing heart rate to a more physiological level were also studied. Cardiovascular measurements recorded during administration of enflurane at 1.3 minimum alveolar concentration (MAC; 2.89 +/- 0.02%) to spontaneously breathing dogs (time 1) and during controlled ventilation [arterial carbon dioxide tension at 40 +/- 3 mmHg (time 2)] were

The effects of isoflurane (1 MAC) and enflurane (1 MAC) on cerebral blood flow and cerebral oxygen consumption were studied in 20 male patients without intracranial disease undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery (mean age 57 and 59 years respectively). The aim of the study was to investigate whether both agents diminish autoregulation of cerebral blood flow and CO2 reactivity of cerebral blood vessels. Patients were randomly assigned to one of two groups (10 patients each) receiving either isoflurane 1.15 vol.% or enflurane 1.68 vol.% endexpiratory. Measurements were performed and blood sam

Forty patients undergoing intracranial aneurysm clipping were operated on under either barbiturate anesthesia (in 22) or enflurane anesthesia (in 18). Cardiac output, arterial and mixed venous oxygen tension, and arterial, right atrial, pulmonary arterial, and pulmonary artery wedge pressures were measured. Cardiac index, intrapulmonary shunt fraction, and pulmonary vascular resistance were calculated. Hypotension to 60, 50, and 40 torr was induced with sodium nitroprusside. There was a decrease in shunt fraction with the induction of anesthesia in both groups. During induced hypotension there

The possibility of enflurane being an inducer of malignant hyperthermia (MH) was examined by using the contracture test in in vitro muscle from a patient with MH. An administration of 2% enflurane elicited contracture in MH muscle and an elimination of enflurane relaxed this contracture. This result, therefore, strongly suggested that enflurane is the one of the trigger-agents for MH.

Exposure of phenobarbital-pretreated rats to low concentrations of halothane (0.5%) and reduced oxygen tension (FIO2 0.08) resulted in the development of liver necrosis in 51% of the animals. Fasting of rats for 24 hours before the same type of exposure increased the incidence of liver necrosis to 80%. Exposure of fed rats to enflurane (1.5%) and isoflurane (1.4%) in conjunction with low oxygen tensions resulted in no liver necrosis; however, in fasting animals, these same concentrations, when accompanied by low oxygen concentrations, produced an incidence of liver necrosis of 35% and 80%, res

For over a decade there has been concern about hepatitis related to halothane anesthesia. No dose relationship or other direct cause has ever been established, and jaundice has been found to occur after other anesthetics for surgical operations. Enflurane is a newer halogenated compound with a remarkable record of safety, yet a few cases of hepatitis are reported to be associated with its administration. We have compared effects on the liver of the two anesthetics by testing hepatic serum enzymes and sulfobromophthalein in 12 patients who received halothane and 12 who received enflurane. No si

The literature data and personal experience with high - and very high - risk patients show that the association of enflurane as anaesthetic and pancuronium as muscle-relaxant constitutes a positive advance in balanced general anaesthesia. Cardiocirculatory depression is not encountered; if anything, there is an improvement of homeostatic conditions. This results in increased safety, even for patients regarded as inoperable. Confirmation of the reasons for associating these two drugs has certainly been obtained. The method cannot, however, be employed indiscriminately, but, at least in theory,

It may be possible to reduce costs in anaesthesia when there is a choice of drugs and methods. Two of the most widespread techniques are inhalation anaesthesia with enflurane following induction with thiopentone, and intravenous anaesthesia (IVA) with propofol. The aims of our study were to compare the costs, effectiveness and side effects of the anaesthetics involved in these two techniques, and to measure significant clinical parameters. METHODS. After approval by the hospital ethics committee, 40 adult patients of ASA physical status 1 and 2 who had been scheduled for elective septorhinopla

This study assesses the effects of agents commonly used in anaesthesia on enflurane-induced seizure threshold and on established seizure activity, during steady state enflurane anaesthesia. EEG seizure activity was monitored in cats from chronic cortical and subcortical recording sites. Diazepam, thiopentone, methohexitone and ketamine all enhanced established EEG seizure challenge. This latter effect was most evident under conditions of lowered PaCO2. The effects of these intravenous agents on established enflurane seizure patterns exceeded in duration the expected EEG effect of the agent whe

The arrhythmogenic dosage of epinephrine, administered by constant intravenous infusion, was measured in five dogs during enflurane, methoxyflurane and halothane anaesthesia. While premature ventricular contractions were observed in only one of five dogs with enflurane and methoxyflurane, epinephrine-induced arrhythmias were seen in all animals during halothane anaesthesia. Epinephrine dosage and the resultant increase in mean arterial blood pressure at which arrhythmias occurred during halothane anaesthesia were significantly less (p less than 0.05) than with the other anaesthetics. The response of the carotid body chemoreceptors to administration of halothane, enflurane and isoflurane was tested in the rabbit and cat. In the steady-state all three volatile anaesthetics, in doses up to 1%, were mildly chemodepressant. The oxygen response curves were shifted downwards, but hypoxic stimuli below 5.3 kPa overcame this chemodepression. Two-point carbon dioxide response curves were also shifted downwards, but with no change in slope. Possible mechanisms involved in the chemoreceptor response to transient and steady-state anaesthetic administration are discussed.

Male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed in inhalation chambers to halothane and enflurane in concentrations from 50 ppm-1000 ppm (0.0025-0.05 minimum alveolar concentration; MAC) 6 h a day for 3-9 days. Repeated subanaesthetic concentrations were used to avoid effects of general anaesthesia and to increase the metabolized fraction of the inhaled anaesthetics. Exposure to 0.05 MAC of halothane (500 ppm) and enflurane (1000 ppm) for 9 days reduced the activity of glutathione S-transferases. A decrease in liver concentration of reduced glutathione (GSH) was observed after inhalation of enflurane, p

DNA damage was detected by nucleoid sedimentation in human lymphocytes stimulated with pokeweed mitogen after exposure to enflurane. Enflurane induces DNA damage at an exposure concentration of 0.2 vol%. Higher enflurane concentrations increase the rate of DNA damage. The DNA damage seen after exposure to enflurane concentrations of 0.2 and 3.0% vol is comparable to damage after X-radiation of 0.1 and 0.7 Gy. DNA single-strand breaks can be demonstrated by nucleoid sedimentation and can indicate damage before DNA repair begins. Therefore, detected DNA single-strand breaks may be reversible. Ho

This study in dogs determined the effect of systemic cooling and arterial hypocarbia during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) on the requirements for enflurane anaesthesia (MAC) before and after CPB. Twelve mongrel dogs were each anaesthetized with enflurane in oxygen on two separate occasions. End-tidal enflurane concentration was measured with a Puritan-Bennett Anaesthesia Agent Monitor. Using the tail-clamp method, MAC was determined twice with a one-hour interval between measurements (MAC 1 and MAC 2). Partial CPB was then initiated using femoral arterio-venous cannulation and maintained for on

Diltiazem was administered to dogs by an intravenous infusion protocol, which resulted in plasma levels of 71 +/- 6 (n = 7), 139 +/- 9 (n = 7), 353 +/- 33 (n = 10), and 1064 +/- 143 (n = 6) ng/ml, to evaluate the effects of diltiazem on cardiovascular function and coronary hemodynamics in the presence of anesthetic concentrations of enflurane. An additional group of six dogs received enflurane only. The only changes observed with enflurane alone were a decrease in left ventricular (LV) dP/dt, cardiac index (CI), and coronary blood flow 60 min after the baseline measurements were made. In all o
