The wear and tear of racism: Self-silencing from the perspective of young Black women.

CONTEXT: Historically, Black women strategically employed silence to endure enslavement to the U.S., and other forms of racial violence. The current study aimed to understand contemporary perspectives on self-silencing. OBJECTIVE: To explore young adult Black women's experiences of self-silencing and its potential impact on their physical and mental well-being. METHODS: Data are from 16 semi-structured interviews with Black women ages 18 to 39 in southwest Pennsylvania conducted between October 2021 - May 2022. We analyzed the interviews using inductive thematic analysis. RESULTS: We identi

Human migration and the spread of malaria parasites to the New World.

We examined the mitogenomes of a large global collection of human malaria parasites to explore how and when Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax entered the Americas. We found evidence of a significant contribution of African and South Asian lineages to present-day New World malaria parasites with additional P. vivax lineages appearing to originate from Melanesia that were putatively carried by the Australasian peoples who contributed genes to Native Americans. Importantly, mitochondrial lineages of the P. vivax-like species P. simium are shared by platyrrhine monkeys and humans in the Atlantic

Malaria in a vulnerable population living in quilombo remnant communities in the Brazilian Amazon: a cross-sectional study from 2005-2020.

Quilombo remnant communities are areas officially recognized by the Brazilian government as historical communities founded by formerly enslaved individuals. These communities are mostly located in the endemic areas of malaria in the Brazilian Amazon. We retrospectively described the prevalence of malaria among individuals living in 32 recognized quilombo remnant communities in the Baiao and Oriximina municipalities located in the Para State. The number of malaria cases and the Annual Parasitic Incidence (API) recorded by the Brazilian malaria surveillance system (SIVEP-Malaria) from January 20

The medical ethics of Dr J Marion Sims: a fresh look at the historical record.

Vesicovaginal fistula was a catastrophic complication of childbirth among 19th century American women. The first consistently successful operation for this condition was developed by Dr J Marion Sims, an Alabama surgeon who carried out a series of experimental operations on black slave women between 1845 and 1849. Numerous modern authors have attacked Sims's medical ethics, arguing that he manipulated the institution of slavery to perform ethically unacceptable human experiments on powerless, unconsenting women. This article reviews these allegations using primary historical source material an

Expelled from Eden: How human beings turned planet Earth into a hostile place.

The focus of this article is the mind-body problem in mainstream modern psychology examined from a decolonial perspective. The construction of the idea of the separation of mind and body is a seminal point of division of labor in the history of modern capitalism. This division perpetuated by the mind-body dualism idea was necessary to justify the enslavement of some and employment to others. Colonization processes have had profound importance on the mind, feelings, behaviors, and political settings. Throughout its history, the subject treated in EuroAmerican psychology has sought to deal with

Genetic modulators of sickle cell disease in French Guiana: Markers of the slave trade.

OBJECTIVES: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the leading genetic disease in French Guiana, reflecting the predominantly African ancestry of the Guianese population. Our purpose was to characterize the genetic modulators of SCD in order to retrace the origin of the population in light of the slave trade. METHODS: We have studied the sickle cell genotype, the βS haplotypes, the alpha and beta thalassemia and the UGT1A1 promoter polymorphisms in 224 Guianese patients with SCD. RESULTS: The genotypes of SCD were HbSS 65.6%, HbSC 24.5%, and HbS-beta thalassemia 9.4%. The most frequent βS haplotypes w

Barriers to the access and utilization of healthcare for trafficked youth: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare has been identified as an important target for training on identification of trafficked youth. Survivors of human trafficking experience challenges in accessing healthcare, both during enslavement and in survivorship. OBJECTIVE: To examine the current evidence in the literature regarding barriers to healthcare faced by trafficked youth. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was conducted using the PRISMA guidelines. Through an electronic database search, articles were screened and included if they primarily addressed victims or survivors of child trafficking a

Utilizing DNA analysis to combat the world wide plague of present day slavery--trafficking in persons.

A study was conducted to determine if modern forensic DNA typing methods can be properly employed throughout the world with a final goal of increasing arrests, prosecutions, and convictions of perpetrators of modern day trafficking in persons while concurrently reducing the burden of victim testimony in legal proceedings. Without interruption of investigations, collection of samples containing DNA was conducted in a variety of settings. Evidentiary samples were analyzed on the ANDE Rapid DNA system. Many of the collected swabs yielded informative short tandem repeat profiles with Rapid DNA tec

On the consequences of childbirth: obstetrics/gynaecology, comparative anatomy and racial theories in 19th century France and Brazil.

The following paper is centred on an analysis of comparative studies of the human pelvis developed over the 19th century by mostly French natural scientists, physical anthropologists, students of the human anatomy and doctors engaged in the initial stages of the emerging fields of gynaecology and obstetrics. As this paper will argue, there was considerable overlap between these specialisations, producing a fundamentally masculine, Eurocentric and racialised knowledge that had an enormous impact in establishing racially informed gynaecological and obstetric practices. This paper argues that com

The power of the 'universal': caste and missionary medical discourses of alcoholism in the Telugu print sphere, 1900-1940.

This article explores missionary medical discourses in three Telugu journals published in the early twentieth century, to analyse how caste pivoted denunciations of alcohol, especially toddy and arrack, in the Madras Presidency and the Hyderabad state. It argues that one women's missionary journal, Vivekavathi, deployed medical knowledge to formulate subtle and occasionally explicit condemnations of toddy and arrack as unclean and unhealthy substances. The journal relied on universal medical and missionary, British and American knowledge frameworks to mark out Dalits and other marginalised cas

J. Marion Sims and the Vesicovaginal Fistula: Historical Understanding, Medical Ethics, and Modern Political Sensibilities.

OBJECTIVES: To review the historical background surrounding the early work of Dr. J. Marion Sims, who developed the first consistently successful surgical technique for the repair of obstetric vesicovaginal fistulas by operating on a group of young, enslaved, African American women who had this condition between 1846 and 1849. Virile Infertile Men, and Other Representations of In/Fertile Hegemonic Masculinity in Fiction Television Series.

Fiction television series are one of the few cultural expressions in which men's infertility experiences are represented. Through a content analysis of twenty fiction series, this article describes and analyzes such representations. By drawing on Connell's concept of hegemonic masculinity and Ricoeur's understanding of paradoxical power structuring, four character types of infertile men are identified: (1) the virile in/fertile man, (2) the secretly non-/vasectomized man, (3) the intellectual eunuch, (4) the enslaving post-apocalyptic man. While these various dramatis persona outline different

[Fetal experimentation, transplantations, cosmetics and their connection with induced abortion].

The increase in induced abortion produces large numbers of cells, tissues and organs, which are used in several fields of Medicine, either in research or in treatment. The main uses are in Cardiology, Hematology, Metabolism, Embryology, Neurology, Immunology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology and Transplantations. Flavor enhancers and cosmetics also benefit. Utilitarianism has led to an increase in abortion-originated cell and tissue banks. Abortion is justified through the manipulation of language. Vested interests give rise to complicity in researchers and society as a whole. Abortion and tissue 'd

Molecular engineering design of twisted-backbone pure Type-I organic photosensitizers for hypoxic photodynamic therapy.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT), an emerging tumor therapeutic strategy has received tremendous attention. Enslaved by the high dependence of oxygen, Type-II photosensitizers (PSs) mediated PDT is restricted by the hypoxic environment of tumors. By transferring electrons to water or other substrates instead of oxygen, Type-I PSs hold the promise of achieving an ideal therapeutic effect under hypoxic conditions. In this study, three twisted-backbone PSs (CBz-TQs-1, CBz-TQs-2 and CBz-TQs-3) are synthesized and studied. Owing to different substituent effects, the ROS generation mechanism transfers fro

An RNA-seq study of the mPFC of rats with different addiction phenotypes.

Addiction is a disease of brain-reward circuitry whereby attention, motivation, memory and emotional systems become enslaved to the goal of seeking and acquiring drug, instead of responding to the natural rewards for which these systems evolved. At the intersection of reward/limbic structures, the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) receives and consolidates signals regarding environment and orchestrates the most appropriate response (i.e., decision-making and attention). As such, mPFC function plays a critical role in the vulnerability or resilience to drug addiction. In our model of drug-induced

America's Original Immunization Controversy: The Tercentenary of the Boston Smallpox Epidemic of 1721.

The CoVID-19 pandemic marks the 300th anniversary of the Boston smallpox epidemic of 1721, America's first immunization controversy. Puritan minister Cotton Mather learned of inoculation for smallpox from Onesimus, a man enslaved to him. When the disease broke out in May 1721, Mather urged Boston's physicians to inoculate all those vulnerable to the disease. Zabdiel Boylston, alone among his colleagues, decided to proceed with the procedure, igniting a heated debate that occasionally grew violent. The division between the advocates and detractors of inoculation were as deep as religion and pol

Did an epidemic of tularemia in Ancient Egypt affect the course of world history?

The dynamics of the spreading, and the identity of a virulent epidemic, similar to bubonic plague or typhus, which hit Ancient Egypt in the middle of the Bronze Age, are hereby presented. Documented in medical papyri as well as archaeological findings, and re-echoed in biblical texts, a plague entered Egypt's main harbor, Avaris, around 1715 BC. As a result, the country was severely weakened at a time when it was already facing serious sociopolitical issues: crumbling central government, immigration, foreign influence, and the rise in power of the army and of warlords. The Hebrews, one of the

Slavery in New Zealand: What is the role of the health sector?

Contemporary forms of slavery and associated adverse health effects are a serious, complex and often neglected issue within the New Zealand health sector. Slavery in New Zealand has most recently been associated with the fishing and horticulture industries. However, victims may be found in a number of other industry sectors, including the health and aged-care sectors, or outside of the labour market such as in forced, early (underage) and servile forms of marriage. Victims of slavery are at increased risk of acute and chronic health problems, injuries from dangerous working and living conditio

Whole Genome Sequencing of the Moruga Hill Rice (Oryza glaberrima) Reveals Its African Ancestry and the Presence of Candidate Stress-Tolerance Genes.

Moruga Hill Rice (MHR) is an African rice (Oryza glaberrima Steud.) brought to Trinidad by formerly enslaved African Americans and has been grown for many generations in Trinidad at subsistence and commercial scale. Despite its historical and agricultural significance, genomic resources specific to MHR remain unexplored, and its genetic composition, evolutionary history, and potential agronomic traits have not been characterized. This current study presents the first draft genome assembly of the MHR genome using a hybrid sequencing approach. The MHR genome size was found to be ~372.9 Mb with 5
