Vertebral osteomyelitis (VO) is a worldwide emerging disease that affects broilers. The objective of this study was to determine the frequency and aetiology of VO in broilers in a highly productive broiler region. For this, 608 broilers with locomotory problems were analysed from 18 farms. Clinical signs were recorded, necropsy was performed and samples were collected from vertebral bodies with gross changes for molecular and histopathological analysis and for bacterial isolation. From broilers with locomotory changes, 5.1% (31/608) had VO and, of these, 93.5% were 40 days old or older and 89.

BACKGROUND: Evaluating the prevalence of vancomycin resistance genes (van genes) in enterococcal isolates from food-producing animals is an important public health issue because of the possibility of resistance genes spread to human.
OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to determine the occurrence of vancomycin resistance genes among Enterococcus species obtained from ostrich faecal samples.
METHODS: One hundred and twenty-five faecal samples of apparently healthy ostriches from five different farms were investigated. Genes encoding vancomycin resistance were studied by multiplex-PCR, and sus

Enterococcus spp. are opportunistic pathogens and commensals in humans and animals and are widely used as indicators of bacterial exchange, providing insights into antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and virulence dissemination within the One Health continuum. Enterococcus from healthy companion animals and their tutors were characterized to compare AMR profiles and virulence traits between hosts and within households in Lisbon, Portugal. Fecal samples (n = 45) were collected from 17 animals and 11 tutors. Enterococci were recovered from selective media, subjected to random amplified polymorphic DN

The lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) leaf is a typical homologous ingredient of medicine and food with lipid-lowering and weight-loss effects. In the present study, lotus leaves were fermented by two probiotics, Enterococcus faecium WEFA23 and Enterococcus hirae WEHI01, and the anti-adipogenic effect of Enterococcus fermented lotus leaf supernatant (FLLS) was evaluated in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes with the aim of exploring whether its anti-obesity ability will be enhanced after fermentation with Enterococcus and to dig out the potential corresponding mechanism. The FLLS fermented by E. hirae WEHI01

Many organisms contain head-to-head isoprenoid synthases; we investigated three such types of enzymes from the pathogens Neisseria meningitidis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Enterococcus hirae. The E. hirae enzyme was found to produce dehydrosqualene, and we solved an inhibitor-bound structure that revealed a fold similar to that of CrtM from Staphylococcus aureus. In contrast, the homologous proteins from Neisseria spp. carried out only the first half of the reaction, yielding presqualene diphosphate (PSPP). Based on product analyses, bioinformatics, and mutagenesis, we concluded that the Neiss

The present study aimed at identifying and assessing antimicrobial resistance of Enterococcus spp. isolated from small and medium enterprise slaughterhouses in Kenya. In total, 67 isolates were recovered from 48 of 195 samples examined from beef carcasses, personnel, and cutting equipment in five small and medium enterprise slaughterhouses. The isolates were identified by using matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization time of flight mass spectrometry and screened thereafter for their resistance against 12 antibiotics by using a disk diffusion assay. The isolates ( n = 67) included Enterococ

For a One-Health investigation of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Enterococcus spp., isolates from humans and beef cattle along with abattoirs, manured fields, natural streams, and wastewater from both urban and cattle feedlot sources were collected over two years. Species identification of Enterococcus revealed distinct associations across the continuum. Of the 8430 isolates collected, Enterococcus faecium and Enterococcus faecalis were the main species in urban wastewater (90%) and clinical human isolates (99%); Enterococcus hirae predominated in cattle (92%) and feedlot catch-basins (60%)

The manganese superoxide dismutase (SodA) of E. faecium strain AUS0004 has been characterised. It is most closely related to Enterococcus hirae, Enterococcus durans, Enterococcus villorium, and Enterococcus mundtii with 100%, 91,55%, 90,85%, and 90,58% homology, respectively, but more distant from SodA of E. faecalis (81.68%). A sodA deletion mutant has been constructed. Compared to the parental strain, the ΔsodA mutant was affected in aerobic growth and more sensitive to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), cumene hydroperoxide (CuOOH), and the superoxide anion (O2•-) generator menadione. The E. faecium

An alarming increase in microbial resistance to traditional drugs and classical pharmacophores has spurred the search for new antimicrobial compounds. Indolone-N-oxides (INODs) possess a redox pharmacophore with promising, recently established, antimalarial activities. In this study, the anti-infectious properties of a series of INODs were investigated. The antibacterial activity was evaluated against five bacterial strains Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus hirae), Gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli) and acid-fast (Mycobacterium tuberculosis). The antifung

Biofilms, communities of microorganisms, are important in the medical and pharmaceutical sectors due to their potential to contaminate medical implants and other equipment. Because their thick matrix makes them resistant to antiseptics, disinfectants, and drugs, biofilms are difficult to eliminate. Therefore, this study investigated the antibiofilm potential of a ruthenium-based complex incorporating the bipyridine ligand CS27. Using the XTT reduction assay, the inhibitory and disruptive effects of CS27 on bacterial biofilms were assessed in vitro for a panel of clinically and industrially rel

Enterococcus species form an important population of commensal bacteria and have been reported to possess numerous virulence factors considered significantly important in exacerbating diseases caused by them. The present study was designed to characterize antibiotic-resistant and virulent enterococci from ready-to-eat (RTE) seafood. A total of 720 RTE shrimp samples comprising sauced shrimp (n = 288), boiled shrimp (n = 216), and smoked shrimp (n = 216) obtained from open markets in Delta State, Nigeria, were assessed. Standard classical methods and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were used in

The objectives were to study the diversity of Enterococcus spp. isolated from mastitis cases, milking equipment and the environment of dairy cows; and to determine in vitro resistance of isolates to antimicrobials that are relevant to human and animal health. Ten dairy farms were visited to collect samples from mastitis cases, faeces, bedding, aisles, water and milking equipment. Identification of Enterococcus at the species level and antimicrobial resistance testing was performed by MALDI-TOF and the disk-diffusion method, respectively. Of 365 isolates, Enterococcus hirae was the most prevale

Recently, an antimicrobial effect on Mycoplasma agalactiae (Ma), the main etiological agent of contagious agalactia (CA), was reported in vitro with strains of Enterococcus spp. from ovine and caprine milk. The aim of this work was to evaluate the interaction of Ma with the same Enterococcus spp. isolated from other anatomical locations (vagina) and other bacterial populations present in milk, such as coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS). The vaginal Enterococcus strains and the raw milk CNS were isolated from sheep and goats. Experimental in vitro conditions were prepared to assess the grow

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Enterococcus species is a growing global health concern, especially due to their resilience, gene transfer potential, and zoonotic implications. Pigeons (Columba livia domestica) may constitute overlooked reservoirs of antimicrobial-resistant Enterococcus spp.
METHODS: This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Enterococcus isolates from pigeons in Hungary in 2022 and to assess the prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR), extensively drug-resistant (XDR), and pan-drug-resistant (PDR) phenotypes.
RESULTS: A tota

Enterococcus spp., as an opportunistic pathogen, are widely distributed in the environment and the gastrointestinal tracts of both humans and animals. Captive Asian elephants, popular animals at tourist attractions, have frequent contact with humans. However, there is limited information on whether captive Asian elephants can serve as a reservoir of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The aim of this study was to characterize AMR, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), virulence-associated genes (VAGs), gelatinase activity, hemolysis activity, and biofilm formation of Enterococcus spp. isolated from

The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a critical issue across various ecological interfaces, highlighting the need for a One Health approach. Enterococcus spp., known for their ability to acquire and disseminate resistance, serve as an excellent model due to their presence in diverse hosts and environments. This study investigates antimicrobial resistance, biofilm formation capacity, and the efficacy of antibiotics on biofilm biomass reduction in isolates from multiple sources. A total of 197 Enterococcus isolates were used. Antimicrobial resistance was determined using the Kirby-Bauer

Drug resistance is of great importance to human and animal health, but wild environments are still poorly understood in terms of their function as reservoirs of dangerous microbes and resistance determinants. The aim of the study was to determine the antibiotic susceptibility and virulence factors of Enterococcus bacteria from wildlife in Tuscany, Italy. Of the 36 mammalian fecal samples, 52 isolates were derived and classified as Enterococcus faecium (46% of isolates), Enterococcus hirae (19%), Enterococcus faecalis (13%), Enterococcus gallinarum (8%), Enterococcus casseliflavus (6%), Enteroc
