[Influence of environmental and climatic factors on the incidence and course of stenosing laryngotracheitis in children with acute respiratory diseases].

A clear correlation was found between the development of stenosing laryngotracheitis (SLT) in the presence of viral infection, its severity, and the environment well-being of an area where a child resides. The level of environmental pollution and the interaction of environmental factors and weather-climatic ill-being, which vary with time and have regional features, adversely affect the course of SLT and require mandatory correction during complex therapy and seasonal antirecurrent treatment. The increase in the incidence of childhood SLT may be a biological indicator of the environmental ill-

Outbreak of cryptosporidiosis associated with a man-made chlorinated lake--Tarrant County, Texas, 2008.

In July 2008, clusters of laboratory-confirmed cryptosporidiosis cases and reports of gastrointestinal illness in persons who visited a lake were reported to Tarrant County Public Health. In response, epidemiologic, laboratory, and environmental health investigations were initiated. A matched case-control study determined that swallowing the lake water was associated with illness (adjusted odds ratio = 16.3; 95% confidence interval: 2.5-infinity). The environmental health investigation narrowed down the potential sources of contamination. Laboratory testing detected Cryptosporidium hominis in

How to reduce the exposure risk of medical staff from SARS-CoV-2 by reducing environmental contamination: Experience from designated hospitals in China.

BACKGROUND: Using daily monitoring of environmental surfaces and personal protective equipment (PPE), we found an increase in environmental contamination since August 18, 2021, in a designated hospital for COVID-19 patients in China, which may lead to an increased risk of exposure to medical staff. METHODS: To investigate the cause of increased environmental contamination and effect of our intervention, we obtained environmental samples at pre-intervention (August 18-21, 2021) and post-intervention (August 22-28, 2021) from six infection isolation rooms with windows for ventilation and other

Notes from the field: atypical pneumonia in three members of an extended family - South Carolina and north Carolina, july-august 2013.

On August 5, 2013, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control was notified of a case of acute respiratory failure in a previously healthy woman. A family interview revealed the patient's uncle and cousin had also been hospitalized with similar symptoms in North Carolina. The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and the North Carolina Division of Public Health collaborated to identify the cause of the respiratory illness cluster and to prevent additional illnesses.

Mass psychogenic illness attributed to toxic exposure at a high school.

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Mass psychogenic illness may be difficult to differentiate from illness caused by bioterrorism, rapidly spreading infection, or toxic substances. We investigated symptoms attributed to exposure to toxic gas at a high school in Tennessee. In November 1998, a teacher noticed a 'gasoline-like' smell in her classroom, and soon thereafter she had a headache, nausea, shortness of breath, and dizziness. The school was evacuated, and 80 students and 19 staff members went to the emergency room at the local hospital; 38 persons were hospitalized overnight. Five days later, after

An investigation of apparent mass psychogenic illness in an electronics plant.

An investigation of a case of apparent mass psychogenic illness was undertaken in a midwestern electronics assembly plant. The plant employed 500 workers, of whom 80% were female. The illness outbreak involved a total of 90 female first shift workers who reported a variety of nonspecific symptoms such as headache, dizziness, and lightheadedness in response to a strange odor in the workplace. Although environmental testing revealed some localized concentrations of a few airbone contaminants, no environmental toxins were discovered that could account for the continuing outbreaks of illness. An a

Barbed wire disease: British medical and lay prisoners of war and their perceptions of mental illness arising from captivity, 1939 to 1947.

This article examines medical and lay perceptions of captivity-induced psychopathologies observed among British prisoners of war during the Second World War. Drawing on medical reports, POW memoirs, and camp publications, it explores how both medical and lay observers understood captivity-induced neurotic illness as a collective, environmentally driven disorder rather than an individual pathology. By reintroducing 'barbed wire disease' into the historical narrative, this paper challenges trauma-centred interpretations of military psychiatry and highlights the social and environmental dimension

Clinical ecology--an unproved approach in the context of environmental medicine.

This contribution outlines the historic development of Clinical Ecology (CE) and the differences it poses to scientific environmental medicine. The pathogenic, diagnostic and therapeutic concepts of clinical ecology are presented and critically acknowledged. Particular attention is given to behavioral and mental illnesses which, according to the beliefs of clinical ecologists, are related to food and chemicals, whereby this occurrence is considered a "cerebral allergy". The term "allergy" is, however, understood in the broader sense, as opposed to the usual medical term, to include non-immunol

Proposal for a new definition of health: an anthropological reappraisal based on a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: The definition of health proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948 ("a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity") remains influential but increasingly criticized for its idealistic, static, and potentially unattainable nature. Contemporary societies are confronted with aging populations, chronic diseases, environmental disruptions, psychosocial stress, and changing perceptions of normality and pathology. This study aimed to explore current perceptions of disease and health among French-speaking respond

Improve sleep in critically ill patients: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial for a multi-component intervention of environment control in the ICU.

INTRODUCTION: In critically ill patients, sleep and circadian rhythms are greatly altered. These disturbances have been associated with adverse consequences, including increased mortality. Factors associated with the ICU environment, such as exposure to inadequate light and noise levels during the day and night or inflexible schedules of daily care activities, have been described as playing an essential role in sleep disturbances. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of the use of a multifaceted environmental control intervention in the ICU on the quantity and quality of

Biological and environmental influences in mental health care.

Principles of Preventive Psychiatry offer a logical and economical approach to mental health care delivery. This article describes two perspectives on mental health care, biological and environmental. If mental illness and related distress are perceived as biologically based, the problems are thought to be under the skin. They can then be treated with chemicals and other scientific technologies. On the other hand, if mental illness and related distress are perceived as developing from environmental factors, the problems are thought to be linked to forces external to the individual. Treatment i

Electromagnetic field induced biological effects in humans.

Exposure to artificial radio frequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) has increased significantly in recent decades. Therefore, there is a growing scientific and social interest in its influence on health, even upon exposure significantly below the applicable standards. The intensity of electromagnetic radiation in human environment is increasing and currently reaches astronomical levels that had never before experienced on our planet. The most influential process of EMF impact on living organisms, is its direct tissue penetration. The current established standards of exposure to EMFs in Poland

Disease Acceptance and Eudemonic Well-Being Among Adults With Physical Disabilities: The Mediator Effect of Meaning in Life.

The acceptance of disability is recognized as one of the most frequently mentioned factors that plays a particularly significant role in subjective well-being. However, so far, only a very small amount of research has been undertaken to clarify how and why acceptance of illness relates to eudemonic well-being. Hence, comprehension of the direct and indirect effects underlying this relationship seems essential for interventions that increase the recovery of people with impairments and enhance their quality of life. The current research was aimed at investigating the association between acceptan

Symptoms of heat illness among Latino farm workers in North Carolina.

BACKGROUND: Symptoms of occupational heat illness provide an early warning that workers are in potentially life-threatening environmental conditions. PURPOSE: This analysis was designed to assess the extent to which strategies to reduce the health impact of extreme heat were associated with the prevalence of heat illness among Latino farm workers. METHODS: Between June and September 2009, a total of 300 Latino men and women participated in a cross-sectional survey about farm worker health. Participants reported whether they were employed through the H-2A temporary agricultural worker program

A norovirus outbreak at a long-term-care facility: the role of environmental surface contamination.

BACKGROUND: The role of environmental surface contamination in the propagation of norovirus outbreaks is unclear. An outbreak of acute gastroenteritis was reported among residents of a 240-bed veterans long-term-care facility. OBJECTIVES: To identify the likely mode of transmission, to characterize risk factors for illness, and to evaluate for environmental contamination in this norovirus outbreak. METHODS: An outbreak investigation was conducted to identify risk factors for illness among residents and employees. Stool and vomitus samples were tested for norovirus by reverse transcription po

Environment-dependent sports emergencies.

As more individuals participate in sports and outdoor activities, the frequency of environmentally related illnesses will increase. Participants in sporting events of long duration and those requiring particularly inclement weather and adverse conditions are especially prone to developing injury. Hypothermia, heat-related illnesses, and high-altitude illnesses are multisystem emergencies that require immediate, specific therapeutic maneuvers. Physicians must be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of these medical emergencies and institute definitive care. Rapid core rewarming, airway cont

[Environmental medical syndromes].

Environmental medical syndromes comprise sick building syndrome (SBS), multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS)/idiopathic environmental intolerances (IEI), electromagnetic hypersensitivity, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), burnout, fibromyalgia, and the candida syndrome. There is also some overlap described in the literature. There is still no established knowledge of etiology, pathology, pathophysiology, diagnostics, therapy, prevention and prognosis. These syndromes are thought to result from a complex interaction of physical, chemical and/or (micro)biological environmental stresses, individual d

Role of viral infections in the development and exacerbation of asthma in children.

Viral infections are closely linked to wheezing illnesses in children of all ages. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the main causative agent of bronchiolitis, whereas rhinovirus (RV) is most commonly detected in wheezing children thereafter. Severe respiratory illness induced by either of these viruses is associated with subsequent development of asthma, and the risk is greatest for young children who wheeze with RV infections. Whether viral illnesses actually cause asthma is the subject of intense debate. RSV-induced wheezing illnesses during infancy influence respiratory health for years

Treatment of the psychiatrically ill patient in the medical bed of a general hospital.

Disorders of the mind are disorders of a vulnerable physical organ: the brain. Psychiatry has a tradition of considering all factors involved in mental illness including psychologic, sociologic, environmental, and spiritual influence. However, we do well not to lose sight of the physical factors involved in mental illness. Admission of the psychiatrically ill patient to the medical bed of a general hospital is often the clear treatment of choice.

Twin and genetic effects on life events.

Twin studies that examine the effect of specific environmental risk factors on psychiatric disorders assume that there are no differences in prevalences of these risk factors between twins and singletons. Violation of this assumption signifies that the results from twin studies might not generalize to singletons. Another assumption, not only underlying twin studies but also epidemiological research, is that life-events are not influenced by familial factors. We tested differences in prevalences of experienced life events in a Dutch sample of 1086 monozygotic (MZ) twins, 2090 dizygotic (DZ) twi
