Communicating with Community: Using Geographic Information Systems to Convey the Impacts of Extreme Heat in Los Angeles Environmental Justice Communities.

INTRODUCTION: Extreme heat is the deadliest weather-related event in the United States, but it is not regarded with the same urgency as other natural disasters. By 2050, Los Angeles is expected to experience about three times as many extreme heat days compared to today, which will likely disproportionately affect environmental justice communities. One barrier to mitigating heat-related vulnerability in frontline communities is a lack of awareness of available resources and adaptation strategies. METHODS: The Prioritizing Local Action for Climate Equity (PLACE) study aims to bridge this knowle

School absenteeism linked to PM2.5 and SO2 exposure in students with asthma from environmental justice areas with elevated AQI risk.

The objective of this study was to examine the influence of air quality (PM2.5, SO2, O3, and NO2) on daily school absenteeism rates in students with and without asthma in an underserved community with elevated exposure risk. This retrospective study analyzed daily attendance and OAP exposure data from 2015/16 to 2017/18 in an environmental justice area located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. For students with asthma, both long-term (28-day) and short-term (previous day) exposure to these PM2.5 levels 10.0-12.0 μg/m3 significantly increased absenteeism compared to days with levels below 10 μg/m3 (

Mobility-based environmental justice: Understanding housing disparity in real-time exposure to air pollution and momentary psychological stress in Beijing, China.

Environmental justice is a crucial environmental and social problem. Previous research in the cities of developed countries has found that ethnic minorities and low-income people were disproportionately exposed to the residential environment with more serious environmental risks. This study proposed a transition from the residence-based perspective to a mobility-based and context-aware approach to reinterpret environmental justice with a focus on the air pollution issue in urban China. A novel research protocol combining geographic ecological momentary assessment and portable air pollutant sen

Evaluating the Effect of Ambient Concentrations, Route Choices, and Environmental (in)Justice on Students' Dose of Ambient NO2 While Walking to School at Population Scales.

The commuting microenvironment accounts for a large part of students' diurnal exposure to air pollution, especially in cities in developed countries where air pollution is caused predominantly by vehicle traffic. Accurate quantification of students' exposure and pollution dose during their commute from home to school requires their home addresses and details of the schools they attend. Such details are usually inaccessible or difficult to obtain at population scales due to privacy issues. Therefore, estimates of students' exposure to, and dose of, air pollution at population scales have to rel

Local Variability in the Impacts of Residential Particulate Matter and Pest Exposure on Children's Wheezing Severity: A Geographically Weighted Regression Analysis of Environmental Health Justice.

Two assumptions have underpinned environmental justice over the past several decades: 1) uneven environmental exposures yield correspondingly unequal health impacts and 2) these effects are stable across space. To test these assumptions, relationships for residential pest and PM2.5 exposures with children's wheezing severity are examined using global (ordinary least squares) and local (geographically weighted regression [GWR]) models using cross-sectional observational survey data from El Paso (Texas) children. In the global model, having pests and higher levels of PM2.5 were weakly associated

A Community-Engaged Oral History Study as a Tool for Understanding Environmental Justice Aspects of Human Exposures to Hazardous Waste Thermal Treatment Emissions in Colfax, LA.

This study investigates environmental justice (EJ) themes related to siting a hazardous waste thermal treatment facility near a low-income community of color. We investigated effects of living near a hazardous waste thermal treatment facility through three EJ aspects: recognitional, procedural, and distributive justice. The study involved the collection of oral history interviews from residents of Colfax, a town in Grant Parish, Louisiana, that hosts an open burn/open detonation hazardous waste thermal treatment facility. The facility processes materials such as munitions, theme park waste, an

A multiscale geospatial analysis integrating explainable machine learning to characterize spatial disparities in melanoma mortality associated with environmental justice and healthcare access in the contiguous United States.

BACKGROUND: Melanoma mortality exhibits profound geographical disparities associated with complex sociodemographic, environmental, and healthcare factors. Traditional spatial models may not fully capture the multi-scale heterogeneity underlying these geographic disparities. This study aimed to characterize the spatial heterogeneity and operational scales of factors associated with county-level melanoma mortality across the United States. METHODS: We conducted a county-level ecological study across the contiguous US (2018-2024). To address mortality data suppression by the Centers for Disease

Air pollution: costs and paths to a solution in Hong Kong--understanding the connections among visibility, air pollution, and health costs in pursuit of accountability, environmental justice, and health protection.

Air quality has deteriorated in Hong Kong over more than 15 yr. As part of a program of public accountability, photographs on Poor and Better visibility days were used as representations of the relationships among visibility, air pollution, adverse health effects, and community costs for health care and lost productivity. Coefficients from time-series models and gazetted costs were used to estimate the health and economic impacts of different levels of pollution. In this population of 6.9 million, air quality improvement from the annual average to the lowest pollutant levels of Better visibili

Understanding the Opioid Epidemic as an Environmental Injustice.

The conceptual link between racial disparities in opioid use-related deaths and environmental justice, a valuable socioecologic paradigm for contextualizing how racial vulnerabilities are ecologically forged, has not been duly explored. Exploring and filling this gap, this article highlights four primary ways through which racial disparities in opioid use manifest as a matter of environmental (in)justice, namely in terms of (1) distributive justice (elevated availability and criminalization of opioids in racially minoritized communities), (2) capability justice (limited access to or uptake of

Back to Nature, Back to Self: Examining Ecotherapy as a Tool of Restorative Healing to Reduce the Impact of Environmental Injustice and Eco-Trauma.

Environmental degradation disproportionally harms communities of historically marginalized groups, with Black communities facing compounded vulnerabilities shaped by colonialism and racialized ecotrauma. While environmental justice scholarship has focused on prioritizing infrastructure-based solutions, it has given less attention to cultural responses rooted in spiritual, communal, and nature-based practices. As a result, Black ecological knowledge, histories of environmental advocacy, and ancestral healing traditions remain underrepresented or decontextualized within dominant frameworks. The

Health disparities attributable to air pollutant exposure in North Carolina: Influence of residential environmental and social factors.

Understanding the environmental justice implications of the mortality impacts of air pollution exposure is a public health priority, as some subpopulations may face a disproportionate health burden. We examined which residential environmental and social factors may affect disparities in the air pollution-mortality relationship in North Carolina, US, using a time-stratified case-crossover design. Results indicate that air pollution poses a higher mortality risk for some persons (e.g., elderly) than others. Our findings have implications for environmental justice regarding protection of those wh

Seasonal green space, air pollution, and temperature in the United States: Spatial disparities among people with disabilities.

This paper advances research on environmental justice through analysis of multiple concurrent environmental exposures (green space, air pollution, temperature) among overlooked marginalized populations (people with disabilities) during both summer and winter seasons in the year 2021. To date, environmental justice research and policy in the United States and other parts of the world have traditionally focused on how low-income communities and racialized minorities navigate higher levels of environmental hazards, and the adverse consequences to health and quality of life. Much less attention ha

Anaesthesia Waste Gases and Bioethics: Balancing Patient Care, Environmental Responsibility, and Occupational Safety.

Anaesthesia waste gases (AWGs) represent a significant yet often overlooked contributor to healthcare's environmental footprint, with implications extending beyond ecological concerns to encompass occupational hazards and complex ethical considerations. This article examines the intersection of AWGs and bioethics through the framework of environmental stewardship, occupational health principles, patient-centered care, and distributive justice. Contemporary volatile anaesthetics possess global warming potentials thousands of times greater than carbon dioxide, while implicated occupational expos

Advancing Methods and Models that Promote Equity in Ambient Air Quality.

Several groups in the United States, including communities of color and low-income communities, are frequently disproportionately exposed to ambient (i.e., outdoor) air pollution, reflecting unjust placement of emission sources, systemic bias, and historic race-based land use planning. Eliminating these inequities is critical for advancing environmental justice. This review synthesizes methodological innovations for characterizing and mitigating ambient air pollution inequities, focusing on the past 10 years, mostly in the United States. Advances in exposure assessment (e.g., empirical models,

Children. The unwitting target of environmental injustices.

Children have little control over where they live, what they eat, the financial circumstances of their families, or the developmental activities and behaviors that make them vulnerable to environmental contaminants. Minority and poor families disproportionately live in communities with landfills, hazardous waste facilities, incinerators, industrial plants, and old housing with poor indoor air quality and lead-based paint. Residents of these communities are also more likely than are more affluent communities to consume fish on a regular basis from local waters, many of which have banned fishing

"We go to the hospital everyday": The Suncor oil refinery, environmental injustice, and contested illness.

Suncor's refinery in Commerce City is Colorado's only oil refinery-processing about 98,000 barrels per day-and one of its biggest greenhouse gas emitters. Since 2005, the facility has been formally cited for nearly 60 environmental violations, even operating without certain necessary permits. Nearby residents experience disproportionate health impacts, including comparatively higher rates of respiratory problems like asthma, reproductive issues and birth complications, diabetes, and cardiovascular conditions-and a 24 percent higher death rate than other Denver-area residents (Armijo and Hook,

Social-Environmental Burden Is Associated with Increased Colorectal Cancer Mortality in Metropolitan Detroit.

ABSTRACT: Neighborhood quality affects both socioeconomic factors and exposure to carcinogenic environmental pollutants, but the impacts of these factors on racial disparities in colorectal cancer mortality are not well described. We used the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Environmental Justice Index social vulnerability module, environmental burden module (EBM), and the combined social–environmental score (SER) to assess relationships with colorectal cancer mortality by race and age in the Metropolitan Detroit Cancer Surveillance System. Among 13,505 patients with colorectal cance

Mining Legacies and Environmental Injustice: Systematic Mining-Led LULC Change in the Witwatersrand Mining Belt, Gauteng, South Africa (1990-2020).

Mining activities significantly shape landscapes and often pose sustainability and environmental justice challenges for surrounding communities. This paper examines land use and land cover (LULC) transitions and their sustainable development implications along the Witwatersrand mining belt in Gauteng, South Africa (1990-2020). Leveraging geospatial analysis, chi-square statistical testing, and spatial clustering, the findings highlight a critical tension between mining and sustainability efforts. While 54.53 km² of mining areas successfully transitioned to natural vegetation, landscape-scale d

Desensitized to Trauma: The Jackson Water Crisis, Environmental Injustice, and Implications for Public Health Social Work.

In 2021, Jackson, Mississippi, received national attention after a winter storm caused the failure of operations at the city's largest water treatment facility. Years of neglect to a crumbling infrastructure triggered the Jackson water crisis, leaving residents without clean and reliable access to water. Predating any one administration, Black and low-income residents had long raised concerns about excessive water bills, broken water mains, poor water quality, and deterioration of the city's water system. Despite years of advocacy and concerned citizens, agenda items continued from one adminis

Legalomics: why microbiology matters to the promotion of just societies.

Despite profound socioeconomic and ecological consequences, criminal justice remains an overlooked dimension of sustainability. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 calls for promoting inclusive societies and ensuring justice for all. Yet the SDG 16 framework largely ignores the biological and structural determinants of behavior related to justice involvement. This perspective article argues that microbial ecology plays a foundational role in cognition and behavior-factors central to justice outcomes. Advances in neuromicrobiology and omics technologies show how microbial disruptions linked t
