Crossing the Tethys on "biotic ferries": new mayfly genera of Gondwanan origin in Mesozoic and Cenozoic deposits of Myanmar and India (Insecta: Ephemeroptera: Teloganodidae).

BACKGOUND: Mesozoic and Cenozoic fossils from Myanmar and the Indian subcontinent provide a crucial source of information on the global distribution of biota after the breakup of East Gondwana and the subsequent northward drift of these land masses towards Asia. While the mayfly fauna of Burmese amber is relatively well studied, data on extinct Ephemeroptera from India remain scarce. RESULTS: Here, we describe for the first time a fossil adult mayfly reliably assigned to the family Teloganodidae. Based on a single male imago discovered in mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber, we establish a new specie

New contributions to Paracloeodes Day, 1955 (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae): description of a new species and of the adult stage of Paracloeodes carolinae Cruz, Salles & Hamada, 2018.

Paracloeodes Day, 1955 is a Panamerican genus of mayflies, currently comprising 23 described species, with the greatest diversity occurring in the Neotropics. Among them, nymph-adult associations have been established only for nine species. As part of an ongoing project investigating mayfly diversity in poorly sampled areas in Brazil, a new species of Paracloeodes was identified, and the adults of Paracloeodes carolinae Cruz, Salles & Hamada, 2018 were reared from nymphs. The new species can be differentiated from the remaining species of the genus based on the following combination of charact

Intermediate hosts of the trematode Collyriclum faba (Plagiochiida: Collyriclidae) identified by an integrated morphological and genetic approach.

BACKGROUND: The cutaneous monostome trematode Collyriclum faba (Bremser in Schmalz, 1831) is a bird parasite with a hitherto unknown life cycle and highly focal occurrence across the Holarctic and Neotropic ecozones. METHODS: Representative specimens of benthic organisms were sampled at multiple sites and dates within the known foci of C. faba occurrence in Slovakia. A combined approach involving detailed morphological examination and sequencing of two independent DNA loci was used for their analysis. RESULTS: We elucidated the complete life cycle of C. faba, which we determined to include t

Life history, systematics and flight ability of the Early Permian stem-mayflies in the genus Misthodotes Sellards, 1909 (Insecta, Ephemerida, Permoplectoptera).

BACKGROUND: The stem-group of Ephemeroptera is phylogenetically important for understanding key steps in evolutionary history of early pterygote insects. However, these taxa have been mostly studied from the taxonomy point of view focused on the pattern of wing venation and often using only classical optical microscopy devices. In-depth studies on detailed morphology of the different body structures are scarcely performed, although the results are critical for elucidation of life history traits and their evolutionary pattern among the basal pterygotes. RESULTS: New information is presented on

Phylogenomics confirms Palaeoptera monophyly and illuminates the origin of winged insects.

The origin and early radiation of winged insects (Pterygota) represent one of the most transformative events in terrestrial evolution, yet phylogenetic relationships among their basalmost lineages (Ephemeroptera, Odonata and Neoptera) continue to be a central debate within insect systematics. Here, we present the most taxonomically comprehensive phylogenomic analysis to date, leveraging genomic and transcriptomic data from 101 species, including 16 sequenced ephemeropteran genomes. Employing 1,367 universal single-copy orthologs across two supermatrices, we used concatenation- and coalescent-b

Taphonomy of aquatic insects from the Crato Formation Lagerstätte (Aptian, Lower Cretaceous) under an actualistic look.

The Crato Formation (Aptian, Lower Cretaceous) is a fossiliferous deposit of global significance, representing a lacustrine palaeoenvironment which offers insights into aquatic insect taphonomy. Despite its importance, prior studies lacked an actualistic approach. Here, we analyze the preservation of mayflies (Ephemeroptera) and dragonflies (Odonata) from this formation using experimental taphonomy on 253 extant Ephemeroptera and 236 Odonata, alongside 306 fossil specimens. Disarticulation experiments showed that the thorax of modern mayfly larvae disarticulated first, yet Crato Hexagenitidae

Limb Loss and Specialized Leg Dynamics in Tiny Water-Walking Insects.

The air-water interface of the planet's water bodies, such as ponds, lakes, and streams, presents an uncertain ecological niche with predatory threats from above and below. As Microvelia americana move across the water surface in small ponds, they face potential injury from attacks by birds, fish, and underwater invertebrates. Thus, our study investigates the effects of losing individual or pairs of tarsi on M. americana's ability to walk on water. Removal of both hind tarsi causes M. americana to rock their bodies (yaw) while running across the water surface at $\pm 19^{\circ }$, compared to

Origin of insect wings, metamorphosis, pupae and the maj or insect orders.

Although most discussions on the origin and evolution of insect wings and metamorphosis have assumed that the ancestors of winged insects were terrestrial, it now seems possible that they were actually aquatic. Changing the basic assumptions affects our interpretations of the origin of metamorphosis and our understanding of insect diversity. It is argued that the ancestors of winged insects were similar to primitive mayflies, developing from aquatic larvae into terrestrial adults, and that metamorphosis originated as an inevitable consequence of an amphibiotic life cycle. It is suggested that

Automated identification of aquatic insects: A case study using deep learning and computer vision techniques.

Deep learning techniques have recently found application in biodiversity research. Mayflies (Ephemeroptera), stoneflies (Plecoptera) and caddisflies (Trichoptera), often abbreviated as EPT, are frequently used for freshwater biomonitoring due to their large numbers and sensitivity to environmental changes. However, the morphological identification of EPT species is a challenging but fundamental task. Morphological identification of these freshwater insects is therefore not only extremely time-consuming and costly, but also often leads to misjudgments or generates datasets with low taxonomic re

The influence of temperature on river fly phenology based on historic records.

First appearance dates of three river flies (Mayfly, two caddis flies: Grannom and Welshman's Button) for 1834-1931 were abstracted from the records of a chalk river fly fishing club in southern UK. First appearance dates of the terrestrial invertebrates Mole Cricket and Glow-worm were also abstracted. Appearance dates were related to monthly mean air temperatures by multiple regression. For all but Mole Cricket, modest but significant advances in phenology were detected in years with warmer temperatures; typically of the order of 3-6 days/°C. However, limited meteorological data were availabl

The nuptial dance of male mayflies helps avoid mistaken interception by other males.

Male mayflies (Ephemeroptera) engage in oscillating nuptial flight patterns in which they climb vertically before passively parachuting downward. Males hold station above an area often in large numbers, intercepting adult females passing overhead. We reconstructed the flight behaviour of common mayfly (Ephemera vulgata) aggregations in 3D, while they were performing their nuptial dance and chasing artificial targets. Male mayflies chased any object that travelled horizontally above them and attempted to mate with it. Despite this indiscriminative chasing, we observed that male mayflies rarely

The thorax of E ubleptus illuminates evolutionary history of winged insects.

The hexapod thorax represents a specialized tagma for body locomotion, and its formation was one of the crucial steps in arthropod evolutionary history. In insects, the thoracic morphology was crucial for the acquisition of wings, which was closely connected with the reinforcement of the lateral thoracic wall (pleuron). Here, we uncover the structure of the pleuron for the first time in a Carboniferous palaeodictyopteran, Eubleptus danielsi from the Mazon Creek Lagerstätte (Illinois, USA). We reconstructed a 3D model of E. danielsi and compared flight-related traits with a broad range of extan

Limited effects of chronic exposure to field-realistic concentrations of carbamazepine on Deleatidium spp. mayfly nymphs.

Pharmaceuticals are a class of emerging organic contaminants found in freshwaters. Potential chronic effects of many legacy drugs (those developed pre-2006) on freshwater biota were not investigated thoroughly before their market release. Carbamazepine, a drug used to treat epilepsy and certain types of neuropathic pain, is a legacy contaminant commonly detected in surface freshwaters worldwide, yet its potential impacts on aquatic invertebrates are largely unknown. Our study investigated the chronic effects (21-d exposure) of environmentally relevant concentrations of carbamazepine (measured

A major flood caused by a typhoon did not affect the population genetic structure of a river mayfly metapopulation.

Floods affect the population structure of organisms that inhabit streams. In recent decades, the scale of floods has become larger due to climate change. Under these circumstances, on 12 October 2019, the largest typhoon in the history of observation in Japan struck the Japanese Archipelago. This typhoon caused heavy rainfall in various places, and the Chikuma-Shinano River System (Japan's largest) suffered great damage. Eight years before the large-scale disturbance in the river system, the population structure of the mayfly Isonychia japonica was studied in detail using quantitative sampling

Habitat preference of blackflies in Omo Gibe river basin (southwest Ethiopia): Implications for onchocerciasis elimination and control.

Ecological control of blackflies (Simulium damnosum) can be an alternative or additional tool to enhance onchocerciasis elimination efforts. However, limited research is conducted on the ecology of blackflies in Ethiopia. In this study, we determined the habitat preference of blackfly larvae and their relationship with aquatic macroinvertebrate predators in the Omo Gibe river basin of southwest Ethiopia. Environmental and biological data were collected from 150 sampling sites during both dry and wet seasons in 2019. Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) were used to identify factors affecting the o

Effects of permethrin as Simulium larvicide on non-target aquatic fauna in an African river.

: The side-effects of permethrin (20% EC) as a Simulium larvicide on aquatic invertebrates and fish was studied under operational vector control conditions to contribute to the evaluation of the product for its possible adoption by the Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa. After 15 weekly applications of the formulation at 0.045 litre per m(3) of water discharge, drift samples virtually contained no Ephemeroptera. Saxicolous fauna density and proportional diversity were also affected. However, both drift and saxicolous fauna recovered to almost pretreatment levels a month after trea
