Epidemiologic characteristics, predisposing factors, and etiologic diagnosis of corneal ulceration in Nepal.

Corneal ulceration is one of the most frequent causes of blindness in developing countries. Between September 1985 and August 1987, 405 patients with corneal ulceration were examined at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal. Males and females were equally affected. The most common predisposing cause of ulceration was corneal trauma, usually with organic agricultural materials. Microorganisms were grown from 324 (80%) of the ulcers. Pure bacterial cultures were obtained from 256 (63.2%) of the patients, whereas pure fungal cultures were obtained from 27 (6.7%) of the patien

Epidemiology of risk factors for osteoarthritis: systemic factors.

Osteoarthritis (OA) appears to be a mechanically driven but chemically mediated disease process in which there is attempted (or aberrant) repair. Well established risk factors for OA include aging, obesity, gender, and, in selected subgroups, congenital anomalies. This review addresses less well established risk factors for OA that can impact joints through their effect on systemic metabolism rather than their contribution to local joint geometry and structure. These systemic risk factors include obesity; bone and bone density; nutrients, particularly those that function as antioxidants; and g

Pemphigus in Israel--an epidemiologic analysis of cases in search of risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Despite the high incidence of pemphigus in the Jewish population, data on the epidemiology and etiology of the disease in Israel are sparse. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to identify clinical and epidemiologic features of pemphigus patients in Israel, while searching for risk factors that induce or exacerbate the disease. METHODS: Demographic and clinical information was recorded from the charts of 55 pemphigus patients treated over a 5 year period. A sample of 22 patients was compared to 22 age and gender-matched controls by means of a questionnaire querying details on lif

Environmental factors influencing the biologic behavior of patterns of pemphigus vulgaris: epidemiologic approach.

BACKGROUND: Pemphigus vulgaris is an autoimmune disorder, in which environmental factors seem to play a role, both in the pathogenesis and the activity of the disease. The purpose of the study was to correlate the biologic activity of pemphigus vulgaris with sun exposure and air temperature. METHODS: An epidemiologic study was carried out, analyzing results of serology, skin involvement, and proportional morbidity rates, related to sun exposure and air temperature. The study was based on retrospective and prospective series of patients. All data were evaluated in a yearly seasonal distributio

Infection of pulmonary artery catheters. Epidemiologic characteristics and multivariate analysis of risk factors.

Sixty-nine consecutive pulmonary artery catheters (PACs) were prospectively studied in a medical-surgical intensive care unit. Fifteen (21.7 percent) and two (2.9 percent) of the PACs were associated with colonization and bacteremia, respectively. These data represent an incidence of 4.98 and 0.66 episodes per 100 catheterization-days, respectively. Coagulase-negative staphylococci were the most common isolates. The source of the colonizing microorganism was the skin in 56 percent of cases, hubs in 28 percent, and unknown in 16 percent. From multivariate analysis, only more than 5 days of cath

Risk factors and outcome of hospital-acquired acute renal failure. Clinical epidemiologic study.

In order to evaluate potential risk factors for the development of hospital-acquired acute renal failure, a case-control study was performed, comparing patients with hospital-acquired acute renal failure with control subjects matched on age, sex, hospital, service of admission, and baseline renal function. The same patients were then reanalyzed utilizing a cohort study design to investigate outcomes from this syndrome. The following elevated odds ratios (95 percent confidence interval) were found while simultaneously adjusting for possible confounding variables using logistic regression: volum

Anaphylaxis Epidemiology and Risk Factors.

Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic condition that affects all ages, and research suggests that prevalence is increasing worldwide. The changing epidemiology of anaphylaxis is attributable to factors such as improved diagnosis, new drug therapies, climate change, and changes in national and international guidelines. Risk factors for severe and fatal anaphylaxis include older age, lung disease, beta-blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, cardiovascular disease, and mast cell disorders. Furthermore, epidemiology of anaphylaxis is variable depending on the trigger. Understandi

Epidemiology and risk factors in urolithiasis.

Stone formation in the urinary tract affects about 5-10% of the population in industrialized countries, although it is very rare in other countries such as Greenland or Japan. The high incidence and recurrence rate contribute to making the urolithiasis a serious social problem. Nowadays, urolithiasis must be considered a 'disease in evolution' for several reasons, such as epidemiological changes, evolution of the methods used for diagnosis, and the treatment and prophylaxis of the population considered 'at risk' of stone disease. Some features of stone disease have changed over the last few ye

Endometriosis: epidemiology and aetiological factors.

Estimates of the frequency of endometriosis vary widely. Based on the few reliable data, the prevalence of the condition can reasonably be assumed to be around 10%. Although no consistent information is available on the incidence of the disease, temporal trends suggest an increase among women of reproductive age. This could be explained-at least in part-by changing reproductive habits. Numerous epidemiological studies have indicated that nulliparous women and women reporting short and heavy menstrual cycles are at increased risk of developing endometriosis; data on other risk factors are less

[Epidemiology and risk factors for osteoporosis].

It has been estimated that 40 % of white women aged 50 years will suffer at least one of the major osteoporotic fractures (hip, vertebrae, wrist) before the end of their life. Bone mineral density (BMD) measurement is the basis of osteoporosis diagnosis and is generally considered as a key element to identify high risk subjects who should benefit most from a bone active treatment preventive of fractures. However, for a given BMD level, the risk of fracture varies with age and with the presence of other risk factors (personal or familial history of fracture, low weight, corticotherapy, fall-rel

Epidemiology and risk factors of osteoporosis.

Recent osteoporosis research has been oriented increasingly toward understanding the determinants of peak bone mass acquisition during childhood and adolescence. Genetic factors may account for approximately half of the variability in peak femoral bone mass density, and racial differences in bone mass have been shown to appear early in life. Physical activity appears to play an important role in increasing bone mass during childhood. Most fractures in the elderly have been found to be associated with reduced bone mass and could therefore be considered osteoporotic. Retrospective reviews of med

Epidemiological factors of cancer in Louisiana.

Certain Louisiana cancer rates are higher than the national averages. This review evaluates the existing epidemiologic literature pertaining to risk factors for cancer in Louisiana. Population-based case-control studies have identified smoking as the most important contributor to lung cancer in Louisiana. Nutritional factors have been found to impart a modest increase in lung, pancreas, and stomach cancer risk. Occupational epidemiologic studies have revealed exposure to asbestos in the cement, shipbuilding, and related industries as a significant risk factor for mesothelioma and lung cancer.

[Epidemiological factors and personality structure].

The relation between sociodemographic characteristics and structure of personality (MMPI) was analyzed using the results of the "Basle Adolescence Study". Type of housing, family structure, employment of the mother and number of working hours of the father produced statistically significant differences, which, however, were small in respect to the general variability of the structure of personality.

[Epidemiology and risk factors for gout].

Gout is the most prevalent form of inflammatory arthropathy, and affecting more than 2% of the population in industrialized countries. The development and expression of gout depends on three key steps:chronic hyperuricemia, the growth ofmonosodium urate crystals and interaction between this cristals and inflammatory system. Prevalence and incidence of gout have risen in recent decades. Numerous risk factors for the development of gout have been established, including hyperuricaemia, genetic factors, dietary factors, alcohol consumption, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, obesity, diuretic use a

The epidemiology of factor VIII inhibitors.

Risk factors for inhibitor development include specific factor VIII (FVIII) genotypes, a family history of inhibitor development amongst first-degree relatives, certain HLA haplotypes and non-caucasian ethnicity. Patients with major FVIII deletions or rearrangements have a higher risk of inhibitor development than those with small deletions or missense mutations. Studies of HLA-DR amongst northern European patients with the intron 22 inversion indicate that certain HLA haplotypes may also confer either increased or decreased inhibitor risk. However, although brothers of patients with inhibitor

Epidemiologic factors that predict long-term survival following a diagnosis of epithelial ovarian cancer.

BACKGROUND: Various epidemiologic factors have been shown to influence the risk of ovarian cancer development. Given the high fatality associated with this disease, it is of interest to evaluate the association of prediagnostic hormonal, reproductive, and lifestyle exposures with ovarian cancer-specific survival. METHODS: We included 1421 patients with invasive epithelial ovarian cancer diagnosed in Ontario, Canada. Clinical information was obtained from medical records and prediagnostic exposure information was collected by telephone interview. Survival status was determined by linkage to th
