Limb defects associated with major congenital anomalies: clinical and epidemiological study from the International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects Monitoring Systems.

Although limb defects associated with other congenital anomalies are rarely studied, they may provide insights into limb development that may be useful for etiologic studies and public health monitoring. We pooled data from 11 birth defect registries that are part of the International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects Monitoring Systems. We identified 666 infants, born from 1983 through 1993, who had a non-syndromal limb defect plus at least one other major malformation (rate 12.9/100,000 population). We used observed/expected ratios and log-linear models to detect association patterns. We found

[Development of a monitor for quantifying personal eye exposure to visible and ultraviolet radiation and its application in epidemiology].

OBJECTIVE: Eye diseases including cataract, keratitis and pterygium have been reported to be sun-exposure-related. The association between macular degeneration and blue light has also been discussed. Moreover, it is hypothesized that retinal exposure to blue light may influence the human circadian rhythm. However, no monitoring devices exist that can measure eye exposure to visible and ultraviolet (UV) radiation over time. To measure the exact dose at specific times, we have developed a novel sensing system (ray-sensing glass system: RaySeG). METHODS: RaySeG can continuously measure and recor

Epidemiology of cutaneous leishmaniasis at a focus monitored by the multinational force and observers in the northeastern Sinai Desert of Egypt.

A longitudinal epidemiologic study of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) transmission was conducted between July 1989 and June 1991 in a 1,200-km2 sector of the northeastern Sinai Desert monitored by the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO), an international peace keeping mission between Egypt and Israel. The occurrence of human cases, sand fly density, rodent collection, and isolations of Leishmania confirmed only one of four surveyed locations as a significant focus of CL transmission. Phlebotomus papatasi, the only anthropophilic sand fly species encountered at this focus, comprised more than

Projecting the epidemiological effect, cost-effectiveness and transmission of HIV drug resistance in Vietnam associated with viral load monitoring strategies.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to investigate the potential epidemiological impact of viral load (VL) monitoring and its cost-effectiveness in Vietnam, where transmitted HIV drug resistance (TDR) prevalence has increased from <5% to 5%-15% in the past decade. METHODS: Using a population-based mathematical model driven by data from Vietnam, we simulated scenarios of various combinations of VL testing coverage, VL thresholds for second-line ART initiation and availability of HIV drug-resistance tests. We assessed the cost per disability-adjusted life year (DALY) averted for each sc

Epidemiological monitoring of sewage sludge and wastewater from an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor using SARS-CoV-2 as a model.

This study explores the potential of sludge-based monitoring from an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor for epidemiological surveillance, using SARS-CoV-2 as a model. We monitored SARS-CoV-2 copy numbers and mutations, and compared concentrations in sludge to concentrations in wastewater samples taken on the same days. From January to August 2021, 32 sludge samples were analyzed; 30 (93%) were positive for SARS-CoV-2, and copy numbers varied from 0.147 to 2.314 copies ×106/L. In wastewater samples collected on the same days, 31 (96%) were positive for SARS-CoV-2, and copy numbers ranged f

Evaluation of the Enterovirus serotype monitoring approach for wastewater surveillance of hand foot and mouth disease using secondary epidemiological surveillance data.

The serotypes of Enterovirus A (EVA) causing hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) exhibit cyclical dominance, with the dominant serotypes being EVA71, Coxsackievirus A type 6 (CVA6), CVA10, and CVA16. In this study, a quadruplex digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR) assay was developed for serotype-level monitoring in wastewater surveillance for HFMD. The quadruplex dPCR assay performance was comparable to that of the singleplex assays. Grab influent samples (n = 122) were collected weekly from a wastewater treatment plant in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, from March 2022 to July 2024. The dP

Closing the praziquantel treatment gap: new steps in epidemiological monitoring and control of schistosomiasis in African infants and preschool-aged children.

Where very young children come into contact with water containing schistosome cercariae, infections occur and schistosomiasis can be found. In high transmission environments, where mothers daily bathe their children with environmentally drawn water, many infants and preschool-aged children have schistosomiasis. This 'new' burden, inclusive of co-infections with Schistosoma haematobium and Schistosoma mansoni, is being formally explored as infected children are not presently targeted to receive praziquantel (PZQ) within current preventive chemotherapy campaigns. Thus an important PZQ treatment

Monitoring medication and illicit drug consumption in a prison by wastewater-based epidemiology: Impact of COVID-19 restrictions.

Drug consumption in prisons is a concern for the safety of incarcerated people and staff. Typically, drug use prevalence in prisons is estimated through urinalysis and intelligence operations, which can be intrusive and stressful. An alternative approach, wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE), was used in this study to estimate the consumption of licit and illicit drugs for the entire population of a prison in Australia. Wastewater samples were collected from March to December 2020, covering periods of no restrictions and periods when prison access was restricted to prevent the transmission of C

"Waste Not, Want Not" - Leveraging Sewer Systems and Wastewater-Based Epidemiology for Drug Use Trends and Pharmaceutical Monitoring.

During the current global COVID-19 pandemic and opioid epidemic, wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has emerged as a powerful tool for monitoring public health trends by analysis of biomarkers including drugs, chemicals, and pathogens. Wastewater surveillance downstream at wastewater treatment plants provides large-scale population and regional-scale aggregation while upstream surveillance monitors locations at the neighborhood level with more precise geographic analysis. WBE can provide insights into dynamic drug consumption trends as well as environmental and toxicological contaminants. App

The epidemiology of children hospitalized with herpes zoster in Canada: Immunization Monitoring Program, Active (IMPACT), 1991-2005.

BACKGROUND: Varicella zoster virus causes varicella (chickenpox) and can reactivate to cause herpes zoster (HZ). In Canada, live attenuated varicella vaccine was recommended for routine use among healthy susceptible children age 1 year and older, in 1999. Varicella vaccine has had a profound impact on the incidence of varicella; however the impact on HZ remains uncertain. METHODS: Surveillance for HZ admissions was conducted by the Immunization Monitoring Program, Active (IMPACT) surveillance network comprising 12 centers representing over 90% of pediatric tertiary care beds in Canada. [Epidemiologic study of hepatitis C virus infections in the population monitored by the former Local Health Unit 10].

During the first six months of 1994 serum samples from 726 patients were assayed for anti-HCV antibodies of which 114 where found to be seropositive. After excluding those belonging to those categories known to be "at risk", the 93 remaining patients were evaluated from a clinical and chemico-clinical point of view. The distribution of seropositivity compared to age showed that around 70% of this sample were aged between 51 and 80 years old. In clinical terms 30% of patients were asymptomatic, while over 40% presented chronic hepatitis and 16% suffered from cirrhosis. Mean levels of bilirubine

Applying population-specific incidence prevalence ratio benchmarks to monitor the Australian HIV epidemic: an epidemiological analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Due to a lack of robust population denominators, Australia is unable to accurately monitor changes in the HIV epidemic for some populations. The ratio of HIV transmission relative to the number of people with HIV (an incidence prevalence ratio, or IPR) can measure such changes. The IPR is measured against an IPR benchmark derived from post-HIV acquisition life expectancy, to indicate whether an HIV epidemic is shrinking or growing. Using IPRs and Australia-specific IPR benchmarks, this study aims to describe the Australian HIV epidemic among three groups: men with HIV attributed

Monitoring changes in malaria epidemiology and effectiveness of interventions in Ethiopia and Uganda: Beyond Garki Project baseline survey.

BACKGROUND: Scale-up of malaria interventions seems to have contributed to a decline in the disease but other factors may also have had some role. Understanding changes in transmission and determinant factors will help to adapt control strategies accordingly. METHODS: Four sites in Ethiopia and Uganda were set up to monitor epidemiological changes and effectiveness of interventions over time. Here, results of a survey during the peak transmission season of 2012 are reported, which will be used as baseline for subsequent surveys and may support adaptation of control strategies. Data on malario

[Immunologic methods in epidemiologic monitoring of population, affected by radioactive iodine as a result of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear plant].

Ultrasound investigations of the thyroid gland and determinations of microsomal antibodies have been performed in persons who lived in the town of Korosten (Zhitomir Region) during the Chernobyl accident. A high correlation has been found between ultrasound and immunological results. The immunological screening of the population suffered from the Chernobyl disaster might be successfully used for the autoimmune thyroiditis detection. These data complete those obtained by the ultrasound tests.

Field molecular epidemiology. Feasibility of monitoring for the malignant bladder cell phenotype in a benzidine-exposed occupational cohort.

Modern molecular and cellular biology have provided powerful new approaches to study cancer in the research laboratory, but these techniques have not been used extensively in field studies or in screening of high-risk occupational cohorts. The primary objective of this study was to demonstrate the use of cellular and molecular methods in combination with medical and epidemiologic methods to identify cancer cases, risk factors, and markers in a previously identified and defined cohort of Chinese workers exposed to benzidine. The screening of exposed workers included occupational, medical, and s

Epidemiology of acute rubella infection in Zambia during the pre-vaccination period (2005-2016) as a baseline for monitoring rubella epidemiology in the post-rubella vaccine introduction era.

BACKGROUND: Rubella is highly under reported in Zambia as in most sub-Saharan countries despite being a disease of major public health concern especially among women of childbearing age. In September 2016, Zambia introduced a combined measles-rubella vaccine in children 0-14 years. In this study, we estimated the proportion positive for acute rubella among suspected but negative measles cases between 2005 and 2016 and determined its correlates for monitoring rubella epidemiology post-rubella vaccine introduction. METHODS: In a retrospective study, 4497 measles IgM negative serum samples from

In-hospital electronic monitoring system approaches to epidemiologic investigation and predictive modeling of contrast-induced acute kidney injury.

Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI), the third most common cause of hospital-acquired kidney injury, is associated with poor clinical outcomes, highlighting the need for accurate prediction. In this study, we used an electronic hospital monitoring system to retrospectively analyze 3,437 patients who underwent elective angiography at a large tertiary regional referral center in eastern China between 2019 and 2024, establishing a comprehensive epidemiological database. The system detected a CI-AKI incidence of 10.53% (362 cases) and revealed a striking under-diagnosis rate of 92.27% in
