Experimental and clinical investigation on oxiconazole.

A new antimycotic imicazole drug, oxiconazole, used both in vitro and in vivo in the treatment of 212 cases of tinea corporis, tinea cruris and tinea pedis is reported. In vitro, it shows marked antimycotic effect against 24 strains of pathogenic fungi except those of Wangiella dermatitides and 3 strains of Aspergilli. The minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) to Epidermophyton floccosum and Candida guilliermondi are 1 microgram/ml and 0.5 microgram/ml. The cure rate of 2% cream of oxiconazole in 124 cases of tinea corporis and tinea cruris is 90.3%, and in 88 cases of tinea pedis, 89.78%.

Prevalence and aetiology of dermatophytoses in Isfahan, Iran.

In this study the prevalence and causative agents of dermatophytoses in Isfahan, a large province of Iran, were determined. Of 16,578 clinically suspected cases 13.3% were affected with dermatophytoses. Lesions of tinea capitis were the most prevalent clinical type of dermatophytoses (54.1%), followed by tinea corporis (23.8%) and tinea pedis (8.9%). Trichophyton verrucosum was the most frequent causative agent (32.8%), followed by Epidermophyton floccosum (17.6%), T. mentagrophytes (16.2%) and Microsporum canis (12.3%). We found a relationship between the spread of dermatophytoses and live-st

Isotopic response of fungal granuloma following facial herpes zoster infections - report of three cases.

BACKGROUND: An isotopic response is the occurrence of a new skin disease at the site of another unrelated, healed skin disorder. METHODS: We report three cases of unilateral granulomatous fungal infection in immunocompetent patients at sites of resolved herpes zoster on the face. Diagnoses were made by potassium hydroxide preparation, histopathologic findings, and fungal culture. Two patients had Candida albicans folliculitis, and the other was infected with both Epidermophyton floccosum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. RESULTS: The patients responded well to antifungal therapy. CONCLUSIONS

A study of dermatophytosis in South West of Iran (Ahwaz).

Two hundred and seventy nine patients suspected of having fungal lesions were examined. Skin scrapping, hair samples and nail clippings were collected from patients. Direct and culture examinations were performed for all samples. About 115 cases of examined subjects had dermatophytosis. Dermatophytosis occurred mainly in adults males (20-29 years). Tinea cruris (24.3%) was the most common type of dermatophytosis followed by tinea pedis (16.5%), tinea corporis (14.8%), tinea ungium (13%), tinea capitis (11.3%), tinea faciei (11.3%), tinea manuum (7%) and tinea barbae (1.7%). Over a 10 year period (January 1988 - December 1997), 3,241 dermatophyte strains were isolated from 18,465 specimens from patients in whom dermatophytosis was suspected clinically. This represents a 17.5% rate of isolation. Trichophyton rubrum (38.44%), Microsporum canis (28.75%), Epidermophyton floccosum (14.5%) and Trichophyton mentagrophytes (13.5%) were the dominant species, and Trichophyton tonsurans (2.09%) has emerged, whilst in the previous decade it had virtually disappeared. Dermatophytoses in Cusco (Peru).

A total of 90 cases of suspected dermatophytoses was observed over a period of 9 months in the city of Cusco (Peru) and in its environs. The age groups most commonly infected were 1-10 and 11-20 year old. The most common tineae diagnosed were tinea capitis (13.3%) and tinea unguium (11.1%). Only four species of dermatophytes were isolated: Microsporum canis (52.4%), Trichophyton mentagrophytes (35.7%), Tr. rubrum (9.5%) and Epidermophyton floccosum (2.4%). Dry weather, low temperature and high altitude do not seem to affect proliferation and infections by dermatophytes.

Frequency of culture-proven dermatophyte infection in patients with suspected tinea pedis.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the incidence of culture-proven tinea pedis in patients who presented with a foot rash clinically suspected to be tinea pedis. METHODS: Cultures were taken from 874 patients in 4 dermatology clinics across the country. The incidence of patients with positively cultured tinea pedis was compared with the total number of patients in the study. RESULTS: The surprisingly low percentage of patients correctly diagnosed with tinea pedis was determined to be 32%. The remaining 68% of patients either had a nonfungal foot dermatitis or tinea pedis with false-negative cul

Foot and ear disease--the dermatophytid reaction in otology.

Chronic otitis external (COE) is occasionally refractory to treatment and may persist for years. In such cases, a dermatophytid (id) reaction from a fungal infection in a remote location should be suspected. Immunotherapy with dermatophyte (Trichophyton, Oidiomycetes, and Epidermophyton [T.O.E.]) extracts and dust mite, based on serial endpoint titration skin test results, as well as a yeast elimination diet, is the treatment of choice. Fourteen cases of id reaction are described. The primary fungal source was not always obvious, but immunotherapy and diet led to complete resolution of the COE

Dermatophytosis of the external auditory meatus.

Thirty-two cases of dermatophyte infection in the external auditory meatus are reported. All the patients complained of slight itching or accumulation of cerumen; however, they had no other serious complaints. Otoscopy revealed lesions in the outer third of the ear canal. The skin of the meatus externus osseus and the surface of the tympanic membrane were all intact. In all cases, mycelial elements were demonstrated in KOH mounts of scrapings, and Trichophyton rubrum (29 cases), Microsporum canis (2 cases), and Epidermophyton floccosum (1 case) were isolated. All patients had ringworm of the p

Could It be Wolf Isotopic Response?: Occurrence of Dermatophytoses on Vitiliginous Skin-Case Series of Five Cases from a Tertiary Care Centre in India.

Wolf isotopic response is the occurrence of new dermatoses on areas of the skin with previous but still active dermatoses. Vitiligo is an acquired disorder characterized by the loss of functional melanocytes which manifests as circumscribed depigmented macules and patches. Dermatophytoses are superficial fungal infections caused by three genera of fungi (Microsporum, Trichophyton, and Epidermophyton) that have the unique ability to invade and multiply within keratinized tissue (skin, hair, and nail). The appearance of dermatophyte infection on previously present vitiligo lesion is an uncommon

Onychomycosis is a frequent nail disease caused by dermatophytes, yeasts, and nondermatophyte molds. Trichophyton rubrum, T mentagrophytes, and Epidermophyton floccosum are the most common etiologic agents worldwide. Candida spp are the most frequent among the yeasts. Diagnosis is corroborated by direct microscopic examination, culture, and histomycology with periodic acid-Schiff stain. Other new methods of diagnosis are discussed. Treatment is based on oral antifungals: terbinafine, itraconazole, and fluconazole, including other emerging triazole drugs. Therapeutic outcome with ciclopirox and
