To study and classify epiretinal membranes (ERMs) based on spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) findings. One hundred and twelve patients with ERMs were examined clinically and underwent OCT examination. The anatomical structure of the macula and vitreoretinal interface was studied. ERMs were classified in two categories: A, with posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) (91 cases), and B, with the absence of PVD (21 cases). Category A was divided into two subcategories: A1, without contraction of the ERM (37 cases), and A2, with the presence of membrane contraction (54 cases). A2 w

PURPOSE: To determine whether uneventful extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) with posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC IOL) implantation induces epiretinal membranes (ERMs).
SETTING: Private practice, with statistical evaluation at a university department in Germany.
METHODS: This prospective study comprised 296 consecutive patients (332 eyes) who had uneventful ECCE with PC IOL implantation for senile cataract. Eyes were examined within 2 weeks preoperatively and 2 weeks and 6, 9, and 12 months postoperatively. The macula was examined with a 78.0 diopter Volk lens. The main outcome m

BACKGROUND: Results from epidemiologic studies suggest that cataract extraction is a risk-factor for the formation of epiretinal membranes (EM).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 250 consecutive eyes which underwent uneventful phakoemulsification with implantation of a posterior chamber intraocular lens were examined within two weeks prior and an two weeks after surgery for the presence of epiretinal membranes. Cellophane macular reflex (CMR) was distinguished from macular pucker (MP).
RESULTS: We found an increase in the prevalence of epiretinal membranes from preoperatively 12/250 (4.8%) to post-opera

We used vitreous surgery to remove idiopathic epiretinal membranes from the macular area in 70 consecutive cases. The abnormal tissue was successfully removed in each case. Vision improved postoperatively in 61 eyes (87%), remained unchanged in six eyes (9%), and worsened in three eyes (4%). However, at the time of final examination vision was improved in only 47 eyes (67%), primarily because of the occurrence or progression of nuclear sclerosis, which occurred in 38 of 60 phakic eyes (63%). Four preoperative factors were associated with final visual acuity of 20/60 or better: (1) initial visi

Four patients observed for a three- to four-year period had a hole in an epiretinal membrane overlying the macula that mimicked a macular hole. In two patients the clinical appearance remained essentially constant. In one, the epiretinal membrane contracted further, reducing the apparent macular hole to a slit and causing the typical appearance of a macular pucker. In the fourth patient, the epiretinal membrane peeled spontaneously causing the apparent hole to disappear. None of the patients had static perimetric findings that suggested a true macular hole. All of the patients had normal or ne

Idiopathic vascular epiretinal membrane (ERM) is a macular disorder which is an extremely rare entity. A hypertensive male in his early 50s presented with complaints of distortion and diminished vision in the left eye. Fundus examination showed a vascularised ERM in the right eye, confirmed by a non-invasive imaging modality, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Despite the presence of vascularised ERM, the patient maintained a stable vision of 6/9 in his right eye. Left eye revealed subretinal fluid and double layer sign on OCT. OCTA confirme

PURPOSE: To describe a case of recalcitrant fovea-involving macular folds developing after uncomplicated epiretinal membrane (ERM) peeling and causing intractable metamorphopsia.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: A 22-year-old man with a stage 3 ERM, visual acuity (VA) of 20/100, and a history of scleral buckle underwent pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling. One week after surgery, VA dropped to 20/125 with worsened metamorphopsia. Ophthalmoscopy revealed a fovea-involving full-thickness macular fold, with photoreceptor outer segments in opposition. After 3

PURPOSE: To estimate the frequency of epiretinal membrane (ERM) in eyes with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) treated with Ex-Press shunt implant. Secondarily, we aimed to assess the role of concomitant cataract surgery and the impact of the ERM on central foveal thickness and macular volume.
METHODS: In this prospective, consecutive, case-control study, we enrolled 54 patients affected by PAOG and scheduled for Ex-Press device implant with or without contemporary phacoemulsification. Contralateral eyes affected by POAG and receiving anti-glaucomatous eyedrops constituted the control group.

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: Epiretinal membrane (ERM) formation is a common change resulting in disturbance of macular vision and predisposing to rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Current treatment strategies rely chiefly on surgical removal of the membranes from the surface of the retina, allowing the retina to remodel and reattach. Improved knowledge of the pathological process behind the formation of these membranes, particularly knowledge of the cell types involved in their formation, is likely to increase our understanding of the way this group of diseases behave and to improve treatment.

Purpose: To evaluate the features and outcomes of postoperative epiretinal membranes (ERMs) after retinal detachment (RD) repair based on the timing of macular peeling (MP). Methods: This retrospective consecutive case series comprised patients who had rhegmatogenous RD repair, developed an ERM, and had MP within 1 year. Results: Of the ERMs, 91% (50/55) were diagnosed between 1 month and 3 months after RD repair. When MP was performed less than 6 months after RD repair (n = 37), the final logMAR visual acuity (VA) was 0.31; this was statistically better than when MP was performed 6 months aft
