10 clinically healthy white leghorn males were utilised for this investigation. Apart from toluidine blue-pyronin-stained Araldite sections, uranyl acetate and lead monoxide staining revealed three types of epithelioid cells. Nuclear and cytoplasmic contents, especially three types of granules, conveniently designated as q, r and p granules, are described in detail and tabulated. Technical difficulties in obtaining carotid body tissue as well as clear-stained sections for ultastructural studies are mentioned.

The perivascular epithelioid cell family of neoplasms in the lung encompass lymphangioleiomyomatosis, angiomyolipoma, angioleiomyoma, and perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa). They share the unique attribute of immunoreactivity for both melanocytic and muscle markers. Some are primary pulmonary neoplasms, while others, such as lymphangioleiomyomatosis, are now thought to represent metastatic, indolent tumors from uterine sites of origin. The clinical and morphologic appearances vary considerably, but a genetic link with tuberous sclerosis complex is a common feature. Considerable advan

Perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasms (PEComas) represent a rare category of mesenchymal tumors, with the gastrointestinal and gynecological systems being the most frequently affected sites. A 46-year-old patient was referred to our clinic due to prolonged menstrual bleeding, without additional symptoms. Histopathological analysis of the specimens collected through exploratory curettage demonstrated the presence of uterine PEComa, characterized by positive immunohistochemical markers including HMB-45, TFE3, Cathepsin K, and ER. The patient underwent laparoscopic hysterectomy with bilateral a

BACKGROUND: Primary perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) of the female reproductive tract have been primarily reported as case reports owing to their clinical rarity. Limited incidence rates and clinical case data hinder a comprehensive understanding of the risks and invasiveness of this disease. We discuss herein the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of this disease to enhance comprehension and therapeutic strategies.
METHODS: We conducted a clinical analysis of patients with PEComa treated at the Gynecology Department of The West China Second University Hospital of Sichuan Unive

BACKGROUND: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) of the uterus is a rare type of mesenchymal tumors associated with myelomelanocytic differentiation and distinctive histological appearances. So far, the reported cases of uterine PEComas are usually benign. Documented malignant cases with aggressive behavior appear to be less common.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 37-year-old female who received abdominal hysterectomy for uterine tumor in a local hospital. She was diagnosed with uterine leiomyosarcoma and referred to Hubei Cancer Hospital. Her histological slides were reviewed and im

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a rare, soft tissue tumor that can occur in various locations. The present report included three patients (one male and two females; age range, 25-51 years) with hepatic PEComas. The collected data included the clinical manifestations, diagnosis, management, treatment, and prognosis. Since it is difficult to diagnose hepatic PEComas by imaging, the patients were diagnosed by tumor tissue examination such as immunohistochemistry, which was positive for HMB-45, Melan-A, and SMA on all slides. The tumor was composed of diverse tissues including smoo

We carried out whole genome and transcriptome sequencing on four tumour/normal pairs of epithelioid sarcoma. These index cases were supplemented with whole transcriptome sequencing of three additional tumours and three cell lines. Unlike rhabdoid tumour (the other major group of SMARCB1-negative cancers), epithelioid sarcoma shows a complex genome with a higher mutational rate, comparable to that of ovarian carcinoma. Despite this mutational burden, SMARCB1 mutations remain the most frequently recurring event and are probably critical drivers of tumour formation. Several cases show heterozygou

Giant cell tumor (GCT) is a benign neoplasm but locally aggressive tumor that uncommonly involves the skull bone. We report a case of a 62-year-old male presented with increasing headache and diplopia. Investigations were suggestive of an expanding mass lesion of the clivus. Histopathology was suggestive of diagnosed with GCT with abundant histiocytes.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a neoplasm chiefly composed of HMB-45-positive epithelioid cells with clear-to-granular cytoplasm and a perivascular distribution. We describe such a tumor involving the prostate and seminal vesicle in a 46-year-old man. The tumor had characteristic histologic features of PEComa. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were positive for HMB-45 but negative for epithelial markers, Melan-A, and S100 protein. The tumor behaved in a malignant fashion, and the patient died of the disease 4 years after diagnosis.

Our knowledge on epithelioid cell granulomatosis of the lung has been extended in recent years. New entities have been added, like zirconiosis; others like tuberculosis, mycobacteriosis and sarcoidosis have gained new interest, because molecular techniques allowed new insight into their pathogenesis and a more rapid and species-specific diagnosis. Experimental work in addition has added a lot of information about the network of cytokines and other inflammatory mediators responsible for granuloma formation. However, our knowledge of this network is still incomplete. Three types of agents are no

The presence of eosinophilic globules has been described as a helpful sign for the histologic differentiation of Spitz's nevus from malignant melanoma. The origin of these bodies is not clear, and they have been likened to Civatte or colloid bodies of lichen planus. This would suggest that they might originate from degenerating keratinocytes or melanocytes or both. These eosinophilic globules and the colloid bodies of lichen planus have been reported to be similar in that they both stain positively for type IV collagen and laminin. These previous reports have failed to include, or have not emp

Epithelioid cells in the chicken thoracic aorta are shown to contain 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in immunocytochemical studies. To determine whether these cells act as chemoreceptors, as do type I cells of the carotid body, we examined the effects of hypoxia and acidosis on the release of 5-HT from the chicken thoracic aorta. Hypoxia caused the output of 5-HT in incubation medium. A reduction of pH to 6.8 failed to evoke 5-HT release. The response to hypoxia was inhibited by the removal of extracellular Ca2+ and by nifedipine and omega-conotoxin GVIA. These results suggest that epithelioid cell

Epithelioid angiomyolipoma (EAML) is a rare variant of angiomyolipoma with malignant behavior characterized by predominantly epithelioid cells and minimal fat, mimicking renal cell carcinoma (RCC) on imaging. Preoperative diagnosis is challenging due to its non-specific clinical and radiological features, necessitating a histopathological examination for accurate diagnosis. Unlike classic angiomyolipoma, EAML can demonstrate aggressive behavior, including local invasion, recurrence, and distant metastasis. Owing to the rarity of the tumor, there is a paucity of data regarding the immunohistoch

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are a rare type of mesenchymal tumor that can arise in any part of the body. As of 2024, 37 cases of pancreatic PEComas had been reported in the literature with patients ranging in age from 17 to 74 years old. This is the youngest reported case of a pancreatic PEComa in an 8-year-old female presenting with abdominal pain and test findings of biliary obstruction. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography identified the location, size, and obstructive effects of the mass. These findings prompted the performance of an endoscopic retrograde cholangi

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-rearranged mesenchymal neoplasms (non-inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor and non-epithelioid fibrous histiocytoma) have been recently described which tend to occur in the superficial and deep soft tissues. Occurrence as a primary sinonasal neoplasm has not been reported thus far. Herein, we describe the first case of sinonasal ALK-rearranged mesenchymal tumor that harbored remarkable epithelioid and spindle cell morphology. The tumor affected a 40-year-old man who presented with flu-like symptoms and was thought to have influenza A. However, computed tomography

Two male patients presented with painless vision loss to blindness in one eye, and the radiography examinations revealed an intraocular mass suspicious for choroidal melanoma. They underwent enucleation. The histopathological and immunohistochemical findings were compatible with the diagnosis of intraocular perivascular epithelioid cell tumor. Because of its rarity, intraocular perivascular epithelioid cell tumor is easy to be confused with other intraocular tumors on histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2021, 57: 857-860).

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumours are a novel histological description of mesenchymal tumours consisting of perivascular and epithelioid cells. Angiomyolipomas are one of the commoner types of this tumour group. They are typically associated with the inherited condition tuberous sclerosis (TS). In TS they are often seen arising in the kidneys and brain, although much more rarely can be seen in the liver. While usually thought of as benign tumours there is little evidence to predict whether they will progress to malignancy. Currently, there is no recommended best management strategy between

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare neoplasms that share phenotypic features with angiomyolipomas, clear cell sugar tumors, and lymphangioleiomyomatosis. They presumably represent the neoplastic counterpart of a yet-unidentified perivascular epithelioid cell that expresses smooth muscle and melanocytic immunomarkers. The uterus is the second most common site of origin for perivascular epithelioid cell tumors, after the retroperitoneum. Although most uterine perivascular epithelioid cell tumors are clinically benign and can be cured by a complete surgical excision, there is
